I recently graduated with a BS in geology and my dream job is working at the federal level/USGS. I know how the government has veterans preference and was wondering if it would be worth it to complete 4 years of service, then get a masters afterwards, and try to gain more of a geologic resume later on. I am aware that being a veteran doesn’t qualify you automatically, but it makes the competitiveness significantly easier to manage, especially if you are qualified on the geology side. My fear is that after 4 years of service, I might have a hard time getting into a masters program due to the time gap from my bachelors. Can someone offer any guidance?

Im a senior in hs and have narrowed down my college choices to UALR and ATU. In practically every way ATU beats UALR, higher ASBOG passing rates, better campus, nicer staff/easier to work with, etc. BUT UALR’s geology program has a ABET accreditation and ATU’s does not, does this matter? Do employers really care about if your school is accredited by abet or not? Especially since so few schools are.

I am a modeler. I have extensive experience with bayesian, MCMC, likelihood models etc. In undergrad I did lots of stuff with GIS and data processing/cleaning out of larger datasets (using python/R). I basically have a little bit of knowledge here in there.

I am working on getting familiar with SQL and I am currently taking a ML class. My goal is to submit some projects to github and start job hunting.

I am writing to look for validation/recommendations. Most of the posts I am seeing are from a while ago and I was wondering if the market is still looking for untrained PhDs. It’s scary to leave academia and I am not even sure I am competitive (no industry experience whatsoever).

Any recommendations of what to study/realistic feedbacks will be appreciated.

To those who have experience with going to the HGS student expo, I have a few questions as someone who has never been. If I am registered for the first session in the morning Monday, would it be unwise to have a flight that leaves Tuesday afternoon? The latest flight has me leaving about three hours before the expo actually "ends," but I don't want to miss out on a potential interview if they conduct them that late during the second day. Are the interviews pretty spread out time-wise during the entire conference, or do they tend to happen around the same time/day? Basically I don't want to have to pay for another night or two at a hotel if not many interviews even occur in person on Tuesday. If zoom interviews post-conference are more commonplace, that would be good to know too. TIA!

I’m currently in 11th grade, really into math and I used to want to pursue pure math, but there’s so many things that I like to do and I’m curious about ( like environmental sciences, physics, chemistry ) and geology is one of those things that sticks out to me. Sort of a mix between all of the stuff I’d love to do, especially fieldwork. So I just wanted to ask some things,

How likely is it to do fieldwork ? Anywhere really, abroad or not

Do you enjoy your work ? I don’t mind about pay personally, more so just working in something I enjoy

How are the courses for a geology PhD in university ?

And any advice for university would be great, too ! I plan to study in BC and do a math and physics degree ( not too knowledgeable about university lingo you can probably tell ) before eventually trying for a PhD program.

I’m a 20(F), I’ll be entering my last year of environmental and geoscience engineering (bsc) degree next month, which means I have to start applying for grad roles, but idk what roles to go for 😭. I would like to work in renewable energy but also use my geoscience engineering. Also I’m highly considering pay aswell. I don’t want to do my masters either.

I am bachelor in geosciences and will have Msc in engineering geology in University of Leeds. Should i go petroleum engineering, mining or civil? If I choose one , which steps should I take for self-study?

Fieldwork carries risk. I really, really like it, but take the risks to yourself seriously. Fundamentally you can be out there on your tod and your own health and safety is numero uno.

Hello I am a 19 year old Mine Mechanic. Just wrapped up my first week underground and now I am super interested in geology. I have always thought it would be a cool career but now actually going underground made me really want to be a geologist. I am currently working 1 week on and 1 week off as a mechanic like I said. I am looking for some advice on whether or not finishing most of my degree with my current work schedule is realistic. I know a lot of my degree must be done in person. Also I am curious on how much an Exploration Geologist makes in the Nevada USA area. I would also be interested in travel work. Thank you guys for any help!

Looking for some advice on how to format my resume to paint a clear picture quickly for folks poring over my resume when my life path hasn't been quite so streamlined.

BACKGROUND:
To make a long story short, I graduated in 2016, did geology related work until covid hit, took a break from geology for a few years to do wildland fire, freelanced remotely a few years to travel the world with my now wife and tried settling down in the US with her.

However, she got removed from the country despite not doing anything illegal and can't get a hold of official documentation stating why she was removed. Her family was also going through a significant medical crisis so I quit my job to help her take care of issues at her home country.

That prompted me to look into geology project work so I could still make money and live with my wife between projects at least. I'm pretty rusty with geology fieldwork but still managed to crawl my way back into the geology world.

QUESTIONS:

1. In what order should I list my previous jobs? I feel chronological order leaves too large of a gap between my previous geo experience and my most recent experience for reviewers skimming through the pages. I'd also like to keep my wildland fire experience on the 1st page of my resume somehow but it currently feels a bit out of place to me in the current resume set up.
2. I'm aiming for my next job to be a FIFO contract core logging job as my wife is currently living outside of the USA. While I love mapping in the wilderness, I feel logging core after core will be a great way to further rebuild as well as expand my geology skillset. Any suggestions on what to tweak in my resume to make me sound more attractive for core logging positions?
3. Should I flesh out undergrad research projects in college a bit more? It's been a decade and it's not work experience so I'm feeling that the answer is no but probably it doesn't matter much either way.
4. Anything that I can change in my resume to attract employers who are more likely to be okay/support me flying outside of the US between rotations? I'm happy to cover additional costs associated with international vs. domestic but I'd like to avoid being on long contracts that don't cover at least a part of international travel costs.

Hi I am a recent geology graduate with internship experience in remediation, ore extraction and creating geophysical models. I find myself highly enjoying lab work and learning about geological processes, and anything geochemistry related. From my internships I found that I most enjoyed the research aspect as well as running samples through icpms, raman and other geochemical instruments.

While I would love to work in a position relating to mining or igneous geology, I find myself struggling with strenuous field work.

I am thinking of taking the environmental science route or wastewater remediation, but I am open to other positions, advice and help.

I enjoy learning about structural geology as well as the processes that make minerals, and learning about solubility and extraction of minerals. I just don't think long term field geology is the best for me to due health conditions that make my capability of completing long days outside mapping unpredictable.

U.S junior geo here on a grassroots exploration project for a small company. I'm FIFO, working 14:7, 10 hour days. Is it normal for exploration managers to keep texting about work even after work hours? I figure he's caught up in upper management stuff, but he tends to only 'catch up 'with us juniors at night (especially for tasks that would have been done a week before).
