I took my boy, Tucker, for his longest hike to date. He did fantastic! He was energetic, enthusiastic, and listened perfectly to all of the commands we have been learning. I couldn’t be more impressed with how his day went. He was on leash when necessary and let off where possible. He’s done many hikes with me before, but this was his first that was this rocky. His paws did get roughed up a bit, but after a day of rest he was back to normal. Lesson learned and a tail of caution to fellow hikers with dogs- buy boots for your furry friends as they cannot advocate for themselves. Paw pads and nails will take a bit of a beating even if they have built up calluses to protect them. Safe and happy trails all!

My boy has been struggling for a while from cancer and we decided to put him down yesterday so he didn’t suffer any further pain.

He started limping in November and got ACL repair surgery in January. That failed and they suspected cancer, but all of the biopsies were negative. They thought he had IMPA as a result. He started steroids and was doing great, but then ate a corn on the cob on accident because he was so hungry. He had to get it surgically removed, almost died of pancreatitis, and was hospitalized for a week. He finally came home and was doing really well, when I noticed a lump on his leg (same ACL tear leg). I took him in for another biopsy and they finally diagnosed him with histiocytic sarcoma. His lungs looked clear though and his lymph nodes felt normal. Despite that, they anticipated that he had cancer the entire time (since Jan) but that the first biopsy was a false negative. They said he looked really good though, and to go month to month.

We went on a vacation with him last week to cannon beach and he loved it. The day we were set to leave for cannon beach, he stopped using his leg again and didn’t want to eat because he hated his pills. We managed to feed him and get there and after a few delightful hours at the beach one day, he was wiped. He continued to decline rapidly over the week - and seemed to be really struggling. We ended up deciding to put him down yesterday to end his pain after a grueling 9 months. He had a cheeseburger, fries and ice cream cone the day before along with a bunch of other goodies.

He was my best friend and the light of my life, and he’s gone much too soon. I thought I’d have several more years with him as he was only 10… but cancer is an ugly bitch. I only had about 8 years with him after rescuing him in 2018 and im absolutely gutted.

How did you guys process this grief? Any helpful advice or things to share?

I’ll miss him forever. It doesn’t feel real.

She will jump and tear those unripe pears from the brench then start eating them. Should I be concerned? I know a small amount of RIPE pears wouldn't hurt her but what about those unripe? I can't collect those unripe pears from the tree lol. She also eats a lot of plums from which some of them are infected by worms

Just got my girl (not sure if breed but suspect golden retriever/ Great Pyrenees) a few weeks ago and I’d love to see what color your pup was when they were a baby and then what color they are as an adult. Picture because she’s cute.

So…our 1 year old Golden Girl needs more rambunctious playtime than our 9 year old is able to keep up with. We have neighbors telling us to take the young one to a local doggy daycare that seems to have a prominent Golden population. Have any of you had experience with such places and do they work out their extra energy or learn more rambunctious or even aggressive behaviors?

I got my own english cream pup in july (I am a teen and do all her care myself with slight help of my parents), shes 6 months and my parents want to get one of their own but due to living in the same house, i dont want to have another around her too quickly. The problem is that they dont want to wait until shes a year old and I compromised with waiting until shes about 9-10 months, will this seriously damage something?? Shes in service dog training but ADORES other dogs and had grown up around puppies before she came home with us, so im not extremely worried about how she will end up liking having a puppy around, just about how it may adjust things.

Hi all!

First time golden retriever owner here, and also first time puppy owner. Our puppy is now 6 months old and a lot of his adult fur has started to come out. I had hoped that I could easily brush him, as with my old dog, but he much rather wants to have the brush in his mouth than on his body. Looking for some good ways to train him into accepting being brushed and would really appreciate anyone’s advice.
