i work with the smalls at the animal shelter i volunteer at, and we usually have guinea pigs and rabbits, which i’ve gotten a hang of. However we received a hamster the other day and i suspect we are about to get another one. I think they may be in for a longer stay because when people adopt a pet it’s usually a larger animal, as they usually just opt to buy something like a hamster for 25 bucks at a petsmart, which is really sad. i’d like to make his quality of life as good as possible. at the moment he doesn’t have a wheel, which i know is an essential item. the ones we have in storage that have been donated are either too big or too small. there isn’t anything i can do about his tank size for now but i tried to clutter up his tank as much as possible today. are there any essentials i need? how do i make it more enriching? i just need advice and a list of stuff i can potentially buy from my own pocket because i truly feel awful for the little guy. thanks for reading!

These enclosures are both connected. My hamster is a Syrian and is four month old male. The bedding is 12 inches. And he has a large sand bath as you can see. A 12 inch wheel. And a bedding made of meadow grass hay, paper bedding and aspen shavings. He has 9 hideouts and I have added more since taking these photos. He is running on his wheel every day. I’ve also added more clutter. Cardboard tubs and fake log. He has been burrowing well. And loves his rock hideout that’s beside his wheel. These photos are a bit outdated but with the description it’ll do. Let me know what you think? Be nice.

Our sweet boy Teddy crossed the rainbow bridge today. He made it to 3 and a half years old. He was such a gorgeous little lad, he'll be missed. My daughter did this amazing picture of him crossing the rainbow bridge to be with his brother's cookie and Simba. They all came together from the same pet shop. They'll all be together again tonight. Sweet dreams little dude we'll miss you always xxxxxx

I’m noticing that my boy’s nails are getting quite long. Any recommendations with how I could get them to file down naturally or should I start clipping them? I’ve watched a couple videos saying that their nails are supposed to naturally file down but it doesn’t seem to be the case with this guy! This is pebbles btw!

My sweet boy passed today. He was acting completely fine around 8am, then started to be wobbly and lethargic around 12pm. Within a few hours, his condition worsened and he let go. He’s buried at my childhood home where he lived before I moved out. He can play with my late twin gerbils, Jekyll and Hyde.
His birthday was December 5th, which is Krampusnacht.
(By the way, a “Hamper” is a hamster. When we first got him, he scampered around his enclosure like he was on crack. My mother called it ‘Hampering’ because he was a Hamster that was scampering.”
Edit: Thank you all for the wonderful pictures. My mother decided to send me a very emotional text as well. It reads: “He's under the crepe myrtle outside my room. I told him he was back home and can rest now.”

Ever since i came out of the clinic and my mental health improved, it helped me take better care of her!
I got her a new and better house to sleep in, new stuff and threw the old ones out!
I also gave her sprays, after thinking she doesnt love them, but it seems she loves specific ones! (Like in the picture)
I reaally love my hammy.
I also made her a boredom breaker for her and SHE LOVED IT.
I had so mich anxiety over so much stuff, that i wasnt the best hammy mom, but im better now!
She loves her new setup and she utilizes her new house soo good!
I dont have to destroy her nest anymore! She does her business on the other part of the home now yay.
I wanted to try coco fiber too soon, when my paycheck comes

You're supposed to tear it apart above ground, not take the whole thing with you and try to shove it in your burrows. Well, at least she finally got interested in it so a win is a win.
I audibly laughed when I saw this video from last night. She's got cheeks full of veggies and now she is carrying around a boredom breaker filled with some food.

I just got my Campbell, Poopoopeepee, a new enclosure, and realised since her old one is like 640 square inches, thats suitable for a Robovorski hamster........... So I said shoot, why not, I can run to a pet store and buy everything it needs, and then I can have two hamburgers.
Meet Gugugaga 🥰 he hates me and wants me dead (typical for Robos) but I think he'll warm up one day

(NOT ASKING FOR MEDICAL ADVICE) Hi, i have a 1.5 ish year old hamster who i think is a bit underweight and he’s not eating as much hard food anymore, it seems hard for him. What are some easy things i can feed him daily or weekly that will help him? (easy as in i dont have to cook and preferably things that don’t have to be refrigerated or anything as i dont have access to kitchen appliances at this moment)
