Questions Hg spill

My lab had equipment that has a large volume of mercury. We discovered it was leaking, estimates are 1-20mL. The time duration is uncertain, but 1-6 weeks. No personnel were present in the space during the leak. The leak was discovered, the initial clean up done by on site response teams, assessed by hazmat safety vendor, cleaned and clear by a referred 2nd hazmat clean specialist vendor, and then 2 days later post inspection for vapor. The spill happened on concrete that was sealed 20 years ago but has eroded. On the post cleanup analysis they found trace (no data provided) vapors from the cracks and concrete seems, reapplied the zinc clean up powder, will do a 2nd round of clean with plans to do a new seal on the floor after the next post cleanup vapor inspection assuming the vendor approves. Now if this information has been provided in writing; only verbal updates.

Management has been tight lipped with providing data and an official report. When a peer requested the report they were given a copy on the hand written notes from the hazmat cleaning vendor. As far as I know, no vapor measurement data.

Talking to facilities it’s assumed that the hazmat cleaning vendor reported their findings to the county as required by law (CA) but there is limited information and communication in any written format about the event.

My understanding is that an official report has to be provided to potential exposure employees within 15 days following a formal written request. I will get medically tested as I was a first responder. I’m comfortable with hazmat risk as a part of my profession and personal hobbies (ceramics). But the uncertainty is concerning for some. I know the relative exposure risk from environmental exposure / food exposure is likely comparable. The spill location had constant HVAC air flow and constant temperatures (73F).

My primary question is what information should I request to get access to data and an official report. Does the hand written report qualify for the state osha standards? I am correct that the employer is requires to provide an incident report with the measurement data, initial site assessment, remediation procedures and related follow up assessment? Personally I’m more curious than worried (if anyone here believes I should be more concerned let me know).

It appears that there was foot traffic through the spill site. We were told that they did do a full analysis of the whole building, checking for vapor room by room. As well as the HVAC system. But words don’t replace data in a discipline that is data driven. I also did not have formal training on the spill response (planned all day in person training planned 2 weeks from now before the spill was discovered).

Our CHO was not trained on the SOP for this type of spill. The hazmat response plan and team had not been formalized at the time of the event. The real issue is that the uncertainty is creating anxiety among some peers.

I trust that the business is motivated to avoid litigation and (hopefully) the safety of their community members. The building was shut down 1 day during the initial response by the outside vendors and opened after being given approval by the vendor (again all verbal communication).

I’m looking for expert input about what type of report I have the right to request and what this group experts input is about the situation. I tell my peers they have the right to be safe and need to feel comfortable with their level of risk tolerance. My risk tolerance is higher than most but I’m also not blindly taking risks; I look this stuff up for fun! I like to make informed decision about risk (professional, personal, recreational as a long time wilderness backpacker).

What types of questions will help navigate an anxious administration but help get the information that I want to know? I want to frame it as curiosity (which is authentic) and maybe help them understand their legal obligations. That an in person hand waiving without a report and data creates more anxiety for some.

Training/Tactics/Education Fentanyl Cleanup?

I need to clean a room where someone OD'd on cocaine laced with fentanyl. Personal use amounts, it's not like they were cutting it themselves or anything. The police collected the drugs and said that they are finished with the room and we can do what we will with it, but didn't have any advice for how to safely clean up in there. We have no experience or knowledge of drugs like this and have no idea how contaminated the room might be with dust or anything like that. There's nothing visible is all we can tell. We don't really have the money to pay a professional, how dangerous would it be to try cleaning it ourselves? Would goggles, gloves and masks be reasonable enough or are we talking full hazmat suits or something? Any advice greatly appreciated!

General Discussion Hazmat Tech

Hi all - looking for some info on Hazmat Technicians as a career (specifically in Canada would be most helpful).

I have my FF 1/2, Hazmat Awareness/Ops and Advanced First Aid certifications. I'm pretty sure I'd just have to get the Hazmat Tech cert and maybe some confined/rope rescue certs to compliment it before I'm competitive for jobs but I could be totally off.

Can anyone please provide some insight on the required certs? Also, are these types of jobs (either private or public) very common/in demand?

Thanks :)

Training/Tactics/Education Resource for evidence collection

My department has an accreditation coming up and I assumed YouTube would be packed with videos on evidence collection. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find much and wanted to brush up before going downrange. Does anyone have a good resource for evidence collection that they wouldn’t mind sharing?

Garden Grove, CA methyl methacrylate incident megathread

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (KABC) -- Authorities are urgently trying to stop a pressurized tank filled with a toxic chemical at the GKN Aerospace facility from exploding in Garden Grove.

The "crisis situation" has forced 50,000 people out of their homes in Orange County.

In a Sunday afternoon update, Orange County Fire Authority Interim Chief TJ McGovern said firefighters did "a recon mission on the tank" late Saturday night, during which they discovered a crack, which could be relieving some of the pressure.

In a later update, OCFA said an all-night mission will be conducted to confirm if the pressure in the tank has been released and that the threat of a catastrophic explosion has been eliminated.

"The BLEVE threat is the worst-case catastrophic event that we have been talking about. We are not there yet. We need to run this operation tonight," McGovern said.

In the meantime, residents are being asked to continue to avoid the evacuation zone.

Any areas outside of the evacuation zone "are currently considered completely safe and day-to-day activities can continue as normal."

So far, no injuries have been reported.

Training/Tactics/Education How the hell do I tell if I need 1993 red or white tips when hauling diesel?

I know white tip is combustable and red tip is flammable, but neither any company I've ever hauled for, nor the guys at the loading rack can tell me if the diesel I'm loading is combustable or flammable. It's not listed on any bols from any facility I've ever loaded at.

By default every company I've ran for we use the white tips if available so we can run tunnels, but not every truck has white tip placards available.

From what I can tell the fuel magically becomes combustable if you put on a white tip, and it's magically flammable if you put on a red tip.

Scenarios Shipping generator

I am shipping a small handheld generator in a connex in the near future. It’s got a 1gal capacity and runs on JP8/diesel. It’s been drained and has aired out for a while based on where it’s stored, but obviously that’s not truly purged according to the CFR. does that qualify as having “residue last contained”, or can I ship it as is empty with nothing on the HAZDEC? Thanks for the Input!

General Discussion My mother is a hoarder and forgets about things. Today I found all these chemicals leaking in a trash can she stores junk in.

I spent a good 5 minutes looking for a proper subreddit and I'm sorry if this is the wrong one. I'm looking for advice on the best way to proceed. I just had a very minor heart attack and came home from the hospital 2 days ago. My mother is a hoarder. Today when I asked her for the roundup to do the cracks in the driveway she told me to look in the gardening can. This is what I found. The roundup leaked and ate through some things, I found some blue solids on gardening shears. The bottom of this trash can was sitting in a blue receptacle that has this black liquid in it. All of these bottles seem ok maybe IDK. I think have to call a hazardous disposal site and drive 20 miles to dispose of all of this but I don't know anyone with a pickup truck. Is that what I really have to do? She thinks I'm overreacting.

Questions Hazmat Endorsement for Lithium Ion Batteries?

Im a freight broker. Recently I was asked to move an electric semi truck/tractor that contained a lithium ion battery. Apparently the truck was not operational, so the plan was to ship it on a flatbed RGN trailer.

The customer listed it as Class 9 hazmat UN 3556. I dont move a ton of hazmat freight, but some light research led me to believe that it did not require a hazmat endorsed truck driver to ship it on a flatbed truck.

But my coworkers disagreed, and said we did need a hazmat certified driver, because the battery weighed more than 1000lbs.

This is whats been bugging me... wouldnt that also mean every truck driver who drives one of these would also need a hazmat endorsement? No way that could be true, right? Or do you just need the hazmat endorsed driver when its being hauled as freight, but not when its being driven?

Anyone have experience or insight into this? Thanks in advance

Software and Tech HCN Monitor

Folks, I'm looking into some single gas HCN monitors to acquire for our Fire Marshall to use. Anyone have any recommendations? Looking for something simple that he won't have to do much with to make things easier and safer for him during post-incident investigations.

Questions Mercury

Guys… I have like 10 lbs of liquid mercury in a glass jar I inherited in an estate.

My county waste disposal won’t take anything close to that amount

The EPA sent a guy out a few years ago. They basically recorded I had it and wouldn’t help in anyway.

How the fuck can I rid myself of this.

Questions Uncured epoxy resin floor coating flammability risks in large industrial environments.

Post image
8 Upvotes

So a little backstory to begin this question. I work in a federal industrial environment in the hazmat disposal department. Last week we had a major incident where we had epoxy floor coatings that were being turned in uncured that reached 140°. Due to the temperature, we were directed to do a water quench to kill the reaction.

Due to the site rules at the place I work, contractors will dispose of their uncured resin with us. Normally, the heat is manageable, but due to the incident at the site, leadership is worried about fire risks.

Currently, our disposal process has separating the part A and part B kits, and disposing of them with local regulations.

What are some steps we can take to mitigate the fire risk of the uncured epoxy?

Also, if you work with epoxy resin, what’s your advice for this?

TLDR: Epoxy gets extremely hot due to it being mixed. How should we prevent fire risk while also being contractually obligated to take uncured product?

(The picture is what was turned in that reached such a hot temperature).

Questions I clean rocks with iron out and bleach and use two buckets, one for each. I accidentally mixed them up and poured a bunch of bleach into a bucket with iron out and rocks in it. What do I do?

I tried to poor it out but when I did this terrible smell and pain hit me in the nose I just went running back inside because I know it’s suppose to mix into something dangerous.

It’s just in a bucket on my front porch. Should I just keep trying to dump it while holding my breath or full it up with water to dilute it or something else? Don’t wanna mess this up and get hurt in the process. Also are my rocks gonna be alright?
