Info/resource Welcome to r/hoggies!

Welcome to r/hoggies where we celebrate and help wild European hedgehogs.

Our wiki page has lots of information to help you help our spiky friends, such as plans for hog houses, feeding advice, gardening advice, how to help a poorly hog, and lots more!

This short film: why we should worry and what we can do by BHPS spokesperson Hugh Warwick is a good introduction about the struggles hedgehogs are facing and what we can do about it.

Any questions, please ask :D

First time, last night, seeing Crumb with one of her babies. I knew there were two hoglets but haven't seen any out with her until now. I really think she was trying to teach it to forage or increase confidence. We have at least had some rain now, so there should be more natural food, as well as the food I put out.

Last pic is of the more independent baby, which could be a boy, certainly bigger.

Very interesting to see how grey they look, compared to her brown colouring.

We have a new hoglet, usually these start to roam by themselves around this time a year, you can see the footage here https://youtu.be/Ju0wfeRPhs0 start at 3:10 if you don't like young foxes! It's still so small, it can hardly reach the food in the bowl ❤️

Question Newly released hogs - is this normal?

I rescued two hedgehogs in July (you guys were really helpful!) and they have now been released at the back of my garden. They weigh 10x what they did and have been treated for lungworm. I’ve attached a video of Sophia who weighs 832g but appears to have leaves/marks on her now? They’ve been out and about for 7 days. Is this normal? Just want them happy and healthy :)

Heard what sounded exactly like a bird tweeting in the night so went to investigate and LOOK JUST LOOK! 🥺

Edit: to those fretting that I'm scaring them, I know and I'll leave them alone from now on ok?

Question Slugs: aaarrrghhhh

Post image
73 Upvotes

I’ve at least two possibly three HH using the garden most nights. I’ve been putting out some dog food and water for them, not so much need of water now of course, but noticed the food attracts slugs in their droves!

I understand slugs can be bad for the HH because of parasites so can anyone point me toward a feeding solution that works for HH but prevents slugs from filling the bowl?

🦔It's been a while since I last checked the garden trail cam, and my resident hog has been very industrious over the past few weeks! First time I've had a resident hedgehog, and the first time I've caught them preparing their nest with grass and materials. Whilst I see them on camera visiting the feeding station regularly, this is special to see them at their homes too.

I have a few feeding stations set up and I wanted to set up a hibernating station to give them somewhere to go for some peace and quiet which was a bit away from the feeding areas and is filled with hay.

I wasn’t sure if they were using it so I set up an extra camera but they do use it! It’s obviously prime real estate as in the 4th clip he’s trying to scootch right in there with another one 😆🥰

Love them.

Advice please Baby hog out during the day

Post image

Quite slow and wobbly and underweight, it is about the size of a mango. I gave it some food and water which seemed very welcome, and I have brought it home temporarily. It was on a playing field and would have been vulnerable to dogs etc. My plan is to keep it in a box and make sure it gets rehydrated and plenty to eat for a few days and then re-release but if anyone has other suggestions pls let me know. We have about 4 hoggies that visit every night. We have three cats and feed them royal canine, which the 🦔 love! Every morning I clean up their mess and I really love having them visit us. They explore our whole house and leave their droppings everywhere 💩 😂

This is Harry. He likes to share his food with the garden slugs 😂🦔🐾

He comes right up to the door so my cat and I lie down on the floor to watch him. He's not bothered.

Edited for typo

Food and water have been left out for him/her.

Last week we had a much bigger hedgehog appear...but this one is considerably smaller.

Sighting Rescued this little guy

Found him wondering around at 8 in the morning, falling off steps and walking into bins and heading towards a busy main road, so i took him to the vets as i was very worried about him.

They kept him overnight to keep an eye on him, called me back and said he only has one eye but otherwise was healthy!

Collected him the next day and took him back to an area very close to where i found him and released him back into a field far away from any road:)
