It’s a specific sub genre I’ve always been a fan of in horror is seeing terrible people do terrible things then get, for lack of a gentler term, karmically skull fucked. Though I’d be reticent to say they’re my overall favourite types of movies since you have to by virtue of the story spend a lot of time with people you don’t like, it is very fun to watch them get what is deserved. I’m currently (FINALLY) watching Fall of the House of Usher and it is sickly sweet for that very reason.

So I’m curious to hear, what are the best horrors where shitty people meet brutal ends?

Scores of anthology movie segments could place here but I’m actually going to use Deadstream as my example. I truly grew to love this movie because at first I didn’t like it, if for no other reason than I initially didn’t get the joke that you are not supposed to like Shawn as a character. He’s obnoxious, entitled and seriously fucking stupid so it’s all the more hilarious when his situation continues to just fall to pieces around him.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I came across this on youtube. But, I think it looks really promising. Plus, it has Keith David in it. That is almost reason enough alone!

For those of us who were fans of The Guest, this is coming out on Friday in the US (we need to wait until December here in the UK...)
It's way more upfront about its melding of action and slasher genres. Dan Stevens does not play the same character as on The Guest, but he seems to be having a lot of fun scarfing down all of the scenery. Great to see Wingard & Barrett let loose with a smaller, (hopefully) more personal film.

1-3 couldn’t have dropped at a better time back in 2021. You just had to be there. I was waiting for each one to drop on Netflix during that time. After rewatching them recently, it still holds up great in my opinion. Deena got on my nerves but that’s my only complaint with 1-3. The 4th one was just okay to me, it’s not something I’d rewatch to be honest.

What are everyone else’s thoughts on parts 1-3 of Fear Street?

I'm talking about movies like A Chinese Ghost Story, Encounters of the Spooky Kind, Mr Vampire, The Boxer's Omen etc. They often don't care about having a consistent tone and will jump from being silly to horror to action all to try and just be as entertaining as possible. If you've never seen any it's a very fun rabbit hole to dive into.

I've seen a few Indonesian horror films, and they're pretty great for the most part.

My son and his wife are not horror fans, but ever since my husband passed a few years ago they have been watching two horror movies with me every October. They give me a prompt in August then we discuss them until we come up with the best choices. This year I am a bit stumped though.

They want two movies of the same/similar genre, but as different in style/execution as possible. And if from different decades that is also a plus. Also, no SA, no extreme torture and no weird body horror, so no The Thing unfortunately :(

Hey, I had a wild nightmare last night, and even though it nearly gave me a heart attack, I really liked the concept behind it.

In my dream, a group of people found an abandoned Gothic church in the middle of the woods. In the church's basement, there was a bound man who didn't speak and was extremely aggressive. Despite looking human, his behavior was more like that of an animal.

The group assumed he had been severely harmed or traumatized and tried to help him. I don't remember the middle part, but I know that at the end, paintings on the church walls revealed that the man was actually some kind of monster. The paintings depicted the monster's method of reproduction, which involved a kiss where the monster either vomited into the person's mouth or impregnated them via a tentacle down the throat.

Like whole thing was so creepy and unsettling!

Is there a horror movie like this??

This was a fun supernatural thriller about a cop being hunted by supernatural forces. I managed to catch this one just a few minutes before it left Netflix and was able to watch it all the way through despite being passed the cut off date. This movie is so tense and so fucking scary it makes being touched by someone feel like the worst possible thing. 10/10.

While not objectively a horror game, I find Witcher 3 to have one of the most bone chilling villains.

Master Mirror. Specifically in the Hearts of Stone expansion.

Not only does he lurk through the whole game but is clearly the incarnate of all evil. Despite his evil disposition, he is mostly good vibes when it comes to Geralt.

I feel like the good vibes aspect is the most disconcerting part… simply because that means you are being eyed up as “the greatest ancient evil”s next pawn.

Anyway- when I finished Hearts of Stone, I didn’t cross him but I also didn’t take a reward. Quite frankly, real me was too spooked to take a reward.

I mean, my top pick would be the cops from Barbarian (2022) because what the actual fuck was that all about just leaving her behind and having her fend off a very serious and dangerous threat by herself.

Or the one in Friday the 13th (2009), the police are actually called for once, but all they send is one cop! Just one cop when there’s a murderer on the loose. Not only that, he’s just casually driving down to the lake house with no sirens or anything.

Let's also add another wildcard here and say that sheriff from the remake of I Spit On Your Grave (2010) as well.

Besides that, some cops are portrayed as ignorant, dumb, or or fighting off the killer by themselves and ends getting killed or is actually in cahoots with the villains too.

So who are your top picks for the worst law enforcement characters in a horror movie?

Recently watched Black Christmas for the first time and absolutely LOVED it.

I can be hit or miss with slashers because I really struggle with severe gore. I always love the build up, the tension and dread, but I just don’t have the stomach for most of the big, bloody finales.

Black Christmas was perfect for me because although many characters die, it’s quite low on the gore. It’s borderline bloodless, which was impressive to me because it still managed to be super creepy and fucked up. I love how the dread never lets up. The big finale was tense and dark and disturbing but it never slid into full on splatter territory.

Any other slashers or horror/thrillers you can think of that fit the vibe? Low gore, high scare factor?
