ANNOUNCEMENT B.C. is changing the graduated licensing program starting October 19. Here's what you need to know

Hey reddit! Wanted to share that B.C.'s government has approved changes to the graduated licensing program (GLP), taking effect October 19, 2026. These changes affect anyone who holds a GLP licence.  A few of the bigger changes include:

  • The second road test (the "exit road test") is being removed. Instead, you'll need to visit an office to have a driving record assessment (DRA). Which is a review of your driving history to determine if you’re eligible to move to a Class 5 licence.
  • After you pass your DRA, there's a new 12-month period with zero-blood alcohol/drug content restrictions on your Class 5. If you're 25 or older, there's a new streamlined pathway with a shorter time needed to get your Class 5 licence.
  • Starting in the fall, everyone currently in the GLP will get a letter explaining how these changes affect their specific situation.

More details are here: icbc.com/glp-changes Have a question? Ask it in the comments and we'll answer what we can.

Vehicle Registration & Policy Coverage Surrendering plates when canceling insurance

Why is that when your insurance expires you can keep the plates but if you want to cancel then you must surrender your plates?

Edit: I understand how the rule works. I'm just asking why does it exist

Vehicle Registration & Policy Coverage pst for leased luxury rates

icbc has a tiered pst structure for vehicles above 55k in "purchase price". what is the definition of purchase price? is it the price of just the vehicle itself from the dealer? on my invoice they lumped the vehicle price as MSRP + about 5k in dealer fees. Is it the pre-fee price? Also I had a trade in, so would it be the NET purchase price? This is so confusing and the term purchase price does not seem to be defined or explained anywhere.

Claims Why is it so hard to get ahold of ICBC Adjusters?

My vehicle was in an accident last month and it took almost 45 days for ICBC to declare it Total Loss. Two weeks ago, I was reached out to by an estimater(not the adjuster) to give me the valuation of my vehicle and what they will pay. However, I did not agree with the amount and wanted to be readjusted. The estimator told me to get a hold of my adjuster and talk to them about it. Since then I've been trying to reach my adjuster by phone by email leaving voicemails but have got no success. Anybody else in or gone through this situation?

Autoplan / Premium Discussion (No Quote Requests) I passed my road test and ICBC more than doubled my insurance?

I just passed the road test to get my N motorcycle license. I don't have a car driver's license, have never had one, never insured a vehicle other than my bike. I haven't moved since last year.

Last year, my insurance was about $1700 for the year, with my L motorcycle license.

I just got back from the insurance broker and they told me, now that I have an N, my insurance will be about $4400.

I have no tickets or claims of any kind. My mileage is super low, and they didn't even ask about it. I have basic collision, and comprehensive coverage, but my 650CC bike is under $8000 new.

The agent tried to explain to me that I had NO driver factor under my L license, but now that I have an N, I show up as a new driver, and my driver factor is high because of that and because I'm 'young.' (I'm a 36 year old woman, are we known for daredevil behavior? lol)

My papers from last year say my driver factor is 0.5, these new ones say 1.17.

What gives? Should I try shopping around? The collision and comprehensive show up as $2000 and $660, should I ditch those and after 2-3 years I could just buy a new bike with the money I'd save?

Claims Got rear ended, guy wants to buy my car rather than go through ICBC

He says ICBC will take his license away if we go through them, so he just wants to buy my car outright. Is this like a scam or anyone done anything like this?

Drivers Licensing Zero blood drug concentration

Hi, after living in big cities my whole life and having managed to avoid getting a licence, I unfortunately now need to get one for emergencies. While checking the conditions for L and N, I’ve seen that there’s zero tolerance for alcohol or THC in blood while driving, which is completely fair. But unlike alcohol (I don’t drink anyway), THC can show up even after many days/weeks. So, does that mean technically I would need to stop completely until I get my Class 5/7? Is that what people do?

Had someone reverse into me
Currently driving a 2009 Honda stepwagon with about 73,000km bought for about 10k~
Just looking at it without opening the hood the radiators are pushed in and leaking, I feel if I open the hood it won’t latch again, and I feel if I gave it a light kick it would fall apart.

Claims Insurance agent cannot tell if I will have forgiveness claim or not?

I did a crappy parking last week and scratched my tailgate. As it's down to primer, paint shop estimate $3000 (glass is a little scratched as well). I have total 25 yrs of good driving record (10 yrs in BC) and have never had a claim. I heard that this one might be forgiven but when I called up my insurance, she said she had no information about this and I have to open a claim to ICBC first and they'll decide. Is this how it works? I would think this might be among some areas why I need an auto insurance agent, to answer my inquiry..

Claims Claim Help/Advice?

Hi!!

I was recently in an accident, not at fault, but my car was totalled and I am currently going through the claims process. A month before the accident I had my car into the shop and got $5,998k worth of maintenance done to it.

Suspension Control Arms

Break Pads and Rotors

Wheel Alignment

Blower Motor resistor

Cabin air filter

ICBC is refusing to offer any compensation for these expenses. Do I have grounds to pursue this further? Or do I have to accept the loss?

Any help is appreciated!!

Claims Should I file a claim

Post image
57 Upvotes

I was visiting Vancouver and while the car was parked outside in Airbnb overnight, somebody hit my car from the site now I am thinking whether I should file the claim or not it’s a small damage, but my main concern is it’s a brand new car only two months old I had windshield claim in the second week and now this claim is also a hit and run so if and would it affect me or my claim history too much and would it affect on the evaluation of the car in case of any major incident down the line because I plan to keep this car for a long-term. I do have the deductible reimbursement insurance.

Drivers Licensing Proving driving experience from USA

I have to get records from 2 states to take to ICBC. Both states provided the records online and I printed them at home. ICBC would not accept them. I contacted both states and they said I could pay the fee again and they would mail it to me, and that it would definitely 100% look exactly like what I printed online. Do I really have to go through this exercise or is there another way?

Drivers Licensing My licence is about to expire and I won’t be back for a year. What do I do?

EDIT

I AM IN ASIA AND AM COMING BACK IN A YEAR. I HAVE A FULL LICENCE AND WILL NEED A NEW ONE UPON RETURN.

So they said at ICBC that the licence is renewable for six months after expiry. Then I have to do a drivers licence test again if I don’t come home within that time. Is this correct?

If so, do I get handed an N when I go into ICBC and apply, an L or nothing at all and get told to book my full test??

Please can you tell me from your first hand experience what I should expect?

Claims Backdating to cancel insurance

My so got into an accident and crashed my car. My car was a write off and I went to an icbc insurance broker and they were able to backdate my insurance max 45 days to get a refund on the insurance since I did not use a rental vehicle. My broker said they can email icbc to further backdate the insurance tk get it further back to the date of the insurance to get more money back since I haven’t been driving it.

Now icbc is calling back saying that since I have been in possession of the car exceeding the date, they will invoice me for the insurance that I got back even though i didn’t even drive the car. It took awhile for it to get valued and towed.

Has this happened to anyone? Did anyone fight to is? I don’t think I can just ignore the invoice since they will likely make me pay it before I renew my other vehicle.

Thanks

Claims Leased cars and crashes

Hello r/icbc,

I would like to ask, if I crash a leased car in bc, and I don’t want to complete the repairs to it following a claim, will the lease company be able to repair the car without my say and in turn trigger my insurance rates to rise? How would this process occur in the real world, like would they track down the car asap to fix it or wait for it to be returned at the end of the lease to?

Claims My dad got rear ended by another vehicle on highway and ICBC is trying to get my dad to pay damages to the vehicle that rear ended him

I am still fuming because my dad who is in his late 70's got rear ended by a vehicle behind him on a highway, he got out, took pics of both his vehicle and the other car's as well, while the driver of the Porsche just sat inside the car and told him o hurry up. My dad didnt incur any damages so decided not to file a claim (something that he should have done and it came back to haunt him). Long story short, a month later, he got an email from ICBC saying that the driver of the Porsche has field a claim and is seeking damages and if ICBC can have permission to share my dad's info with the Porshe driver so they can negotiate and come to an agreement directly and it would also be 'cheaper' to deal directly instead of going through ICBC. Anyways I sent a long email email to ICBC citing laws, rules for rear end situations that are in the ICBC manual. It's been more than a month and we still have not heard anything about this claim. My poor dad is shaken and is traumatized and has very little faith in ICBC now, even though he has always had an impeccable driving record. My question is can I do anything further for him, we have not sought legal advice yet, but can go through that route if needed as a last resort. We are absolutely repulsed with how this was carried out by ICBC.

P.s. I work for the provincial government and to see another crown corporation doing this to the general public, especially to our elders is just heart breaking. I will not be letting this go.

Claims Car hit by horse and buggy

Need help. Yesterday took my girls to a birthday party in Surrey. It was on a hobby farm with a bunch of small animals. The lady who runs the little farm was giving horse and buggy rides. I have no clue how she managed but she backed her horse and buggy into the side of my car leaving a pick dent and 2 big deep scratches. What makes me the most furious was how nonchalant she was about it. I am receiving my new car this Tuesday and was supposed to trade in my old car. After hesitation she gave me her phone number DL number and address. What are my next steps. I have no clue if it would be her home or business insurance or if I would go through icbc to have it fixed. I refuse to pay anything to have this fixed and have several pictures and even a video of her hitting. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Vehicle Registration & Policy Coverage Purchasing/storing vehicle as a non-resident

Hi! I'm doing my research, hope you can help. I'm an American citizen (have a summer place in Ontario though). I want to purchase a MY2002 vehicle in BC. I would like to store it in BC until I can import it to the USA (3 to 8 months from now). Can I meet the seller at a broker, complete the purchase, pay 12% tax, get storage insurance, drive to a storage facility and pick it up at a future time? Thanks for your help!!!

Autoplan / Premium Discussion (No Quote Requests) Odometer number incorrect on insurance form, noticed months later

I got insurance on my new (used) car. Just looking at my form and noticed the insurance place input my odometer reading 10,000 km less than I told them. It’s been like 4-5 months.

Was wondering if it’s going to cause issues down the road. Plan on contacting them on Monday
