They don’t sting when swarming. It happens when hives split into two because they’ve become too big.

Swarming bees are totally focused on looking for a new home. As long as you’re calm, so are they. You can easily ‘drape’ them onto anything.

This guy probably found a swarming hive on a tree, and ‘carried’ them back to populate his hive. He probably thought a swarm draped over his ass would be hilarious.

Finally, swarming bees look for empty holes to populate, usually hollow tree branches, but, they’re not all that picky.

273

u/JackLong93 Jul 19 '26

looking for a new home up his ass?

39

u/celestialgenitals Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

You're less than correct on almost every point.

They absolutely can and do sting when swarming. They just have other priorities above stinging, but those priorities can quickly shift.

There are also many reasons why a colony might swarm. Only one of those reasons has to do with the primary colony becoming too big and splitting.

Bees are extremely picky about where they swarm. A swarm location is driven by scouts and their pheromones, but is ultimately selected by the queen and her pheromones. It isn't uncommon at all to have a swarm gather in one spot, only to ditch it for another spot a few hours later.

Idk how these bees ended up on that guy's ass. But if I wanted to create the same effect, I would put a swarming queen in a queen cage a then put her in my back pocket.

Source: me, a beekeeper, who caught a swarm the other day, and also collected several stings. I also have two swarm traps in my backyard right now that finally caught colonies and I'm headed to deal with them in about an hour.

15

u/Sylveon72_06 Jul 19 '26

congrats on the freebees!

u/FreyasReturn Jul 20 '26

23

u/Cute-Advisor-2323 Jul 19 '26

So their new home is his butt

10

u/Jennymint Jul 19 '26

Yeah, I have two artificial hives out back. At one point they swarmed up into the peach tree. I've since had them removed, but they were pretty chill the whole time.

I used to be terrified of bees, but I've never been stung by the ones in my backyard, even when I'm standing mere inches from their hive. Their reputation is far worse than their behavior.

Now, wasps, on the other hand... fuck those guys.

6

u/Aware-Asparagus-3823 Jul 19 '26

How lucrative is this kinda thing? About 10 years ago there was a guy in my town who would sell roughly a quarter gallon of honey for $20, how much would a hive of this size produce per year?

21

u/Sea-Consequence7156 Jul 19 '26

The real money is the mobile hives. Certain nuts and produce require intense pollinator activity not supported by monoculture cropland so farmers pay beekeepers to driver to their farms with hives on the back of tractor trailers to help pollinate during the critical 2-3 week period

When I was a child, I had a small, white plastic container. I'd go around and ask folks if they wanted to see a bee. Then I'd quickly unscrew the lid and at the bottom, written in large block script, was the letter B.

Bum-ble bees

53

u/Kruiwagenchauffeur Jul 19 '26

In Dutch we say: 'Hij heeft honing aan zijn reet' when someone gets followed. This translates to: 'He has honey on his ass', which might be the reason all those bees are there.

23

u/Linus_Inverse Jul 19 '26

Hah, that's great. I can also contribute one: in German we say "er hat Hummeln im Hintern" (he has bumblebees up his ass) to mean that someone is constantly moving about / can't sit still.

21

u/GhostMaskKid Jul 19 '26

<Trauma memory incoming>

Reminds me of when I got my 1st period when I was 12, middle of the summer, then the next day I was at softball practice and wearing a pad under my polyester softball knickers.

When we were in the huddle after practice, criss-cross-applesauce, listening to coach jabber at us, I look down to see my crotch swarmed by mothafriggin GNATS. One of the worst embarrassing moments of my fucking life, ishitunot.

It may be because my mom didnt tell me how often to change the pad, or maybe it was the heat of the texas summer. I felt like roadkill.

Anywho, all that to say, crotch swarms arent as fun as the smiling fella in the video is making it seem to be.

P.S. F periods during sports, F pads in general, and F those gnats in particular.
