Were they actually pits, or just generic muscular mutts? Pits are very generic looking dogs, and you can combine a tom of different breeds and get a pit-looking dog. Here’s some of the many breeds you can mix with others to get a pit-looking dog:
American pit bull terrier
American Staffordshire terrier
American bully
Staffordshire bull terrier
American bulldog
Olde English buldogge
Boxer
Rottweiler
Various different mastiff breeds

Honestly, I think you're right. We should stop blaming pitbulls and start blaming the owners and the children. After all, pitbulls were made to eat children, so it's really the owners' and the childrens' fault for not knowing better and still crossing their paths. The dogs are just doing what's natural to them when they maul the infants.

Our first dog was a border collie (already a bad start to a story - he was a rescue, a family member bought him and asked my dad to take him on once they realised they'd made a terrible mistake 😅) My parents became friends with a goat herder who used BCs to herd his goats, and the guy kindly asked if we wanted to see if our boy had any instincts. We were very excited, because my god this dog was smart. Understood so many words, knew us all by name and crucially, did the sheep dog thing of always being exactly across from us - apparently that's a herding thing, so that the shepherd is on one side of the flock and the dog is on the other. Made catching him completely impossible.
Anyway the day comes, and we all watched with baited breath from a distance.
As the shepherd's dogs knew left and right and obeyed whispered commandos from the shepherd - and our dog just desperately tried and failed to drag a massive stick through the gate of the enclosure meant for the goats 🤦🏻♀️

Are dogs obsessed with retrieving sticks because way back when we trained them to do that to help gather fire wood? And they did it for so long that it's just ingrained behavior now?

Practice for chewing bones, wolves' diet consists largely of them so dogs will try to find a facsimily. They'll even bury sticks sometimes.

Oh they absolutely do use them for those, just be careful that the wood isn't too rotten - thought my dog was going to choke on a stick, pawing its gums bloody and gagging. Turns out there was a piece stuck against the palate behind the canines.

There is actually a theory that the love for sticks predates the whole dog thing and they trained us not the other way round. Wild wolves already play with sticks and carry them around. The theory goes that they adapted to early humans because they could throw the stick further.

I live on the third floor of an apartment building and my dog likes to grab a small piece of mulch and sometimes a giant stick and bring them upstairs. I have to clear out his stick hoard weekly lol

I’ve never understood this obsession my boy has with carrying around large branches while we’re hiking lol. But he looks so happy while doing this, so I make a big deal out of what a good boy he is. He looks so happy while being the branch manager on our hikes lol. It’s the little things that count the most sometimes.

Edit: Love the downvotes, reason I won't let a dog run with a stick is that I had my dog stumble once with a stick in its mouth, stick went into the dog's throat and pierced the skin, not fun! So once again, thank you so kindly for the downvotes.

I live in a rural area and one day I was walking my large dog and saw a 80-93 year old lady walking with a cane about 300 feet away. She saw us and immediately dropped her cane!
When I was close enough to her, I asked her why she did it and she replied “dogs think you will hit them with a stick so I dropped it”
I no longer see her on these walks
