Canine stick obsession

Our first dog was a border collie (already a bad start to a story - he was a rescue, a family member bought him and asked my dad to take him on once they realised they'd made a terrible mistake 😅)  My parents became friends with a goat herder who used BCs to herd his goats, and the guy kindly asked if we wanted to see if our boy had any instincts. We were very excited, because my god this dog was smart. Understood so many words, knew us all by name and crucially, did the sheep dog thing of always being exactly across from us - apparently that's a herding thing, so that the shepherd is on one side of the flock and the dog is on the other. Made catching him completely impossible. 

Anyway the day comes, and we all watched with baited breath from a distance. 

As the shepherd's dogs knew left and right and obeyed whispered commandos from the shepherd - and our dog just desperately tried and failed to drag a massive stick through the gate of the enclosure meant for the goats 🤦🏻‍♀️
