47-year-old Ramabai Ranveer from India, won a marathon barefoot without training and claimed a ₹3,000 prize. After her husband's passing, she has been cooking food to cover the education expenses of her two daughters.

Thats like 30 dollars

Which may be something like 10 days earning for her.

Ummm.. average unskilled labour cost in India is 700/day so 4 days maybe ?

If I got paid 4 days of my salary for running a marathon, I'd happily accept it.
Wouldn't be enough to make me run LOTS of marathons, but hey money is money...
(The people in this video are basically running at my marathon pace. This obviously wasn't any kind of major race with professional runners.)

I would need at least a whole year of revenue to even consider running a marathon, I'm that lazy.

For a housemaid it depends heavily on geographical location, but it might well be a month of working in a home part-time 2 to 3 hours a day. In Beed, an oft drought-struck part of India with chronic economic issues, it's a lot of money for someone who works a lot to earn a pittance. Source: I'm Maharashtrian

It's average and I know many daily wagers getting paid around Rs. 400/day (for women labour).

I could not (and still can't) believe how she won over younger and trained competitors. So I did a bit of research. After reading two full articles about her, here is what I found:
- She was a mother. A determined one!
Unfortunately that's all I could find in those AI-generated articles with less context than this threads headline. Hope it helps.

That was all the information we needed to learn how she did it. Her superpower is doing what it takes to provide for her children.

47 year old, with no training won a marathon? Yeah, she cheated, or the story is bullshit, or both.

People who work labour jobs are fitter than regular office workers. I think she actually did it. Besides, women are far better at endurance tests than men are.
•
u/Wilbis 8h ago
Have you ever ran even a half marathon? You absolutely cannot win a marathon race just by being generally fit and not doing marathon training.

I think that someone in TikTok told him that everything is possibile if you want to, he doesn't know anything about running, he is just talking shit, just like all the brain rot from internet 😂

You can. She probably had little competition in her age bracket
•
u/pinniped90 7h ago
I concede you could maybe slog through a half, painfully, slowly, and cross the finish line without much training.
The article says this was a marathon, although from another comment it appears it may just be AI slop to begin with.

No. You cannot just go from a labor job and run a marathon with no training, no matter how fit you are - unless the labor job itself is....long distance running, I guess. Even Kenyans don't show up and race without training.
Women are not better at men at endurance racing. As distances increase, women's and men's performance gets marginally closer together - enough that occasionally you will see a woman finishing first in an ultra. But the world's top ultra men and still a little faster than the top ultra women.

Labour workers have a lot of endurance and persistence so not surprising really.

"win" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here - but I also agree it's very unlikely she even finished a marathon barefoot with no training.

It was a 3 km race. Not a 42km marathon.
