one of the pics is of an area of my top monitor without any windows over the area, the other is with one of ATL's windows over roughly the same area. This seems to worsen every time after my PC locks itself, only is in the wallpaper layer (as it goes away with a window covering it), and dissapears with a logout and login (with nothing off in SDDM)

I doubt this is my GPU, as it would be over everything being rendered. And while I've had this on both monitors at one point, this time it's only on one of them, my 5K Alogic isn't having this issue at the time of posting.

Is this really a sign of my GPU dying, or is this a KDE bug. I was on an older KDE version for a while and only noticed this after a system update.

Note, I'm aware of rule 5, but I only have pics of (part) my desktop due to showing an issue I'm having related to whatever renders the wallpaper (as this isn't occurring anywhere else in KDE's ecosystem)

I am happy to share with you the new release of BetterStickies, it is one of the best apps on Linux by testimonies of users, it Integrates with KDE, and supports GNOME & CINNAMON too, a single appimage with no installation with a snap option and flatpak (coming soon).

What it is, for anyone new

A unique note taking app with sticky notes DNA for Windows,Linux, macOS (soon). Offline, no account, no telemetry. Built with PySide6 (QT) so it's actually native, not another Electron app eating your RAM.

Nearly a year ago I started working on it because I wanted quick capture that lives on the desktop instead of inside another app I have to open. Windows Sticky Notes wants a sign-in, and on Linux there was nothing decent that works the same across KDE, GNOME and Cinnamon. It also helps my ADHD to have things persist on screen where I can't ignore them.

The main thing it does that other sticky apps don't: you can paste or drag anything into a note.

• Files and folders become clickable shortcuts, and you can drag them back out to your file manager
• Screenshots and images paste straight from the clipboard, PDFs and images get a hover preview, and double-click opens an image at full resolution
• Pasted code gets detected and formatted into a code block automatically, no AI and no network, in about 50ms. Ctrl+M when it guesses wrong
• Rich text, links, plain text, all formatted properly instead of rejected

Other things worth knowing:

• Reminders with sound and desktop notifications
• GIF and image backgrounds per note (because why not)
• RTL text support, and the app plus its full guide are in 12 languages
• Pin a note to lock both position and editing
• Ctrl+scroll to zoom text without opening settings
• Checkboxes with strikethrough when done and nesting
• Snap to grid with an adjustable grid size
• Export to .txt, .md or .json, so you can back them up with whatever cloud you like

What's new in v1.2

Notes have tabs now. Up to three pages inside one note, each with its own text, scroll position and undo history. Ctrl+PgDown and Ctrl+PgUp to move between them, Ctrl+Shift+N for a new one, all rebindable. If you have a small screen this is the feature: one note on the desktop, three notes' worth of content in it.

Search reads every page of every note, including hidden notes and pages you've never opened.

The free version now has exactly one limit. It used to have three: a note cap, a reminders cap, and a cap on animated GIF backgrounds. The reminder and GIF limits are gone entirely, so the free version now has every feature, and the only thing left is a budget of 4 note slots (an extra tab uses a slot).

A new look: in-app color picker, themed icons instead of emoji, and one shared design system across every dialog. Reminders moved out of the text into their own strip on the note.

"Start with the hub hidden" if you want it fully out of the way at boot.

65 fixes across formatting, file shortcuts, dates, translations, read-only notes, global shortcuts and desktop integration on both Linux and Windows.

And v1.2.1 last week fixed the things users told me about after v1.2: notes surviving Show Desktop on Windows, window stacking on Cinnamon, reminders retrying instead of getting lost, images keeping their size and rotation after a restart.

⚠️ One warning if you use tabs: don't downgrade to an older build afterwards. Old versions understand one page per note, so opening and saving a tabbed note there permanently drops its other pages. Export first if you're going back.

I'm getting a bit tired of my desktop and want to try a new theme! What's a theme you'd recommend for everyone?

I've been having some issues with KDE recently.

I've had issues with my monitors since I installed CachyOS about half a year ago. My main monitor keeps bugging out. Sometimes it shuts off completely, but it usually just messes with the display ratio and monitor order. Unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable fixes this, but a more permanent solution would be nice.

More recently, KDE's been freezing on me. The taskbar and app menu is completely unresponsive. It only happens after sitting at idle for a decent amount of time. systemctl --user restart plasma-plasmashell.service fixes it, but it takes about a minute to load.

I use Fedora KDE and I installed steam from konsole following their steam install manual, I launched a couple of times when regularly searching and clicking it just vanished after a little bit without any window opening just steam icon showing below and then I tried from konsole and it actually said some needs online to install stuff and some crash messages and I WAS connected to my wifi, I reinstalled and STILL nothing. PLEASE HELP

 Qt Quick, ~170 MB. It sits on top of the fullscreen game thanks to KWin's overlay
 layer rule, which as far as I can tell is the only way to do that on Wayland.

I have just noticed all my KDE tags are duplicated. I now have a tag for "file.txt" and one for "file.txt(1)" that also points to "file.txt". Is there a way to mass reset these without having to individually delete each duplicate tag? This happened after a recent update.

An update after nearly 2 months working on the project. It previously used its own UDP and GStreamer pipelines and a dedicated Android app, but I found my project climbing the same ladder as Sunshine/Moonlight.

TLDR: So I made a decision and ditched the Android app and GStreamer/UDP pipelines, keeping only the virtual monitor creation pipeline and replacing the streamer backend with Sunshine, and for the viewer, the standard Moonlight app.

Currently tested on Arch, Ubuntu, Tumbleweed, Fedora, and Nix OS.

Supported DEs are KDE 6.7+, GNOME 50+, Hyprland, and I'm working on Sway.

It uses the DE's native virtual monitor creation.

It has two Sunshine instances for dual stream with port offsets to not interfere with the user's existing Sunshine.

This will solve the problem of Linux not having a Duet Display alternative, and soon more DEs will eventually implement virtual monitors, then it can be updated in this project to support those DEs.

Currently, I've made binaries for Fedora, TW, and Ubuntu.

Arch and Nix are source installs.

I tried my best in testing it out on multiple systems, but my system is not the same as yours, so I need feedback or if found problems to contribute the fix.

What's the proper way to backup my KDE settings?

AI suggests performing backups of the ~/.local/share and ~/.config folders, but I wonder if there's something else to it, or an app or a tool within KDE I haven't found for a more reliable plan.

So I made a KDE Plasma theme inspired by the stock OS look from the game "Grey Hack". It's basically Breeze with the right colors slapped on. If you wanna copy it, here's everything you need.

COLORS

Pretty much stock Breeze, just a few tweaks. The accent color matches the game stock theme: #00b1a3.

APPLICATION STYLE

Breeze, transparency set to fully opaque.

PLASMA STYLE

Breeze again (told you, this thing is basically Breeze).

WINDOW DECORATIONS

Two options here:

1. Breeze - just set the shadow color to #00b1a3.
2. Graphite-dark - gives your windows a colored border, but you lose shadow customization.

ICONS

Yet-Another-Monochrome-Icon-Set . In the game, the stock icons are #00b1a3 - not really my thing, but if you want that look, just ask Claude or ChatGPT "how do I recolor a monochrome icon pack" and they'll walk you through it.

POINTERS

CDE Reborn (Breeze works fine too, but I like this one more - it's closer to the game's cursor style).

BONUS:

You might've noticed the "Activate Windows"-style watermark in the corner of some of my screenshots, it's a little tool called Activate-Linux. It's a fun troll project that ports the "Activate Windows" nag screen watermark over to Linux, just for the fun.

SETTING UP THE DESKTOP

Here's how to get your desktop looking like the game:

1. Desktop icons - Set icon size to Medium, arrange in rows. In-game the icons aren't grid-aligned and there's a button to align them, but I'm pretty sure that'd need a custom KWin script, and honestly I didn't bother - I like my icons aligned anyway.
2. Top panel - I went with an Application Menu Bar. (In-game it's literally just a bare panel with no menu bar, so if you want it exact, use an empty panel instead.) Add these widgets, in this order:- Application Launcher- Global Menu- Spacer- Clock- Spacer- CPU Usage- Margin Separator- Memory Usage- System Tray- User Switcher

Turn off floating, set opacity to opaque. Want the launcher icon to match the game? Right-click it -> Configure -> set icon from images.

1. Bottom panel - Just an empty panel with an icon-and-text Task Manager widget.

Custom OS name ("Ellipse OS")

To get Fastfetch to show a made-up name instead of your real distro, override the "os" module's format:

That just hardcodes what Fastfetch prints - doesn't touch your actual system files.

If you want the fake name showing up everywhere (neofetch, lsb_release, etc.), you'd have to edit PRETTY_NAME in /etc/os-release instead - but that's way more invasive, so I'd stick to the config trick above unless you really need it system-wide.

Again, mostly stock KDE Breeze, but I've never seen a theme like this anywhere, so figured I'd share. (Post cleaned up by AI, my English sucks ass)

Hi !

I'm looking for which command you have to use in a terminal to restart and to reboot the same way it would when clicking "Shutdown" or "Restart" from the super menu (the sreen with 30 seconds prompt and a button to cancel and a shutdown/restart now).

but qdbus seems not installed (bash: qdbus: commande introuvable). So obviously the native clicking solution uses an other command, but which ones ?

Anyone else have an issue with plasma draining too much battery?

I've tested plasma side by side with gnome and niri (all on fedora). Plasma consumes ~6W on idle, ~8-9W while (light) browsing, and ~12-15(!) when trying to do more intense browsing while listening to music. Meanwhile, neither gnome nor niri went over 10W at all, and consistently stayed 2-3W lower in all situations. Display brightness was roughly the same, power save mode on all.

Anyone else experiencing anything similar?

Edit: hardware is Asus Zenbook S14 (Lunar Lake). No dGPU.
