Local Resources [Megathread] August Wildfires, Smoke, & Evacuations – Q&A, Links, and Resources
Setting up this megathread to centralize updates, resources, smoke forecasts, and questions so the subreddit doesn't get flooded with duplicate posts.
If you are sharing updates in the comments, please include a source (official EOC releases, BC Wildfire Service, etc.) and refrain from posting unverified rumors.
Official Resources & Emergency Links
- Evacuations, Alerts & Shelters (Kelowna / West Kelowna):
- CORD Emergency (Central Okanagan Emergency Operations): The primary source for local evacuation orders, alerts, interactive maps, and Emergency Support Services (ESS) reception centers.
- EmergencyInfoBC: Provincial evacuation updates and active emergency alerts across BC.
- ESS Evacuee Registration: If you are placed under an Evacuation Order, register here immediately to access shelter and emergency support.
- Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team (ALERT): Call 250-809-7152 for emergency assistance with evacuating livestock and pets in the Okanagan.
- VOYENTALERT! CORD Emergency has shared that they are now using VOYENTALERT! and you can install the app on your phone to be notified of any emergency alerts for your location. https://voyent-alert.us/
- Fires & Roads:
- BC Wildfire Service Dashboard: Interactive map and status updates for active wildfires. You can also download the official BC Wildfire app.

Frequently Asked Questions
"Should I still come to Kelowna or cancel my vacation this weekend?"
- Check for non-essential travel bans first: If the province or Central Okanagan Emergency Operations issues a travel order asking tourists to stay away, cancel or reschedule immediately. Accommodation is needed for evacuees and emergency crews.
- If no travel bans are in place: It depends on your tolerance for smoke and sudden changes. Air quality can shift from clear to hazardous within hours depending on wind direction. Outdoor activities (wineries, hiking, lake days) might be ruined or unhealthy.
- Check cancellation policies: Contact your hotel or Airbnb host directly. Many have specific policies when official air quality advisories or emergency alerts are active.
"Where can I see live air quality alerts?"
- Check the BC AQHI page linked above for official health advisories, or PurpleAir for real-time localized AQI numbers. Keep in mind that smoke changes fast and what looks bad in the morning can clear up by afternoon, and vice versa.
"How do I clean/purify the air inside my home?"
- Use a HEPA Air Purifier: Run it continuously in the main room you use (like a bedroom). Keep all doors and windows sealed tight.
- Build a DIY Corsi-Rosenthal Box: If air purifiers are sold out, buy a 20x20 box fan, a MERV 13 furnace filter (or four taped together into a cube), and duct tape the filter to the back/intake side of the fan. It costs around $40–$60 and clears smoke out of a room fast. A site with great instructions is: https://bclung.ca/lung-health/air-quality/breathe/
- HVAC Systems: Set your furnace fan to "ON" (instead of "AUTO") and install a MERV 13 filter if your system supports it. Ensure the system is set to recirculate indoor air rather than pulling smoky air from outside.
- Avoid adding indoor pollutants: Don't burn candles, avoid heavy indoor frying, and hold off on vacuuming unless your vacuum has a sealed HEPA filter, as it can kick fine particulate back into the air.
- Avoid drawing in outside air as much as possible: This means reducing any activity that exhausts air to the outside. For example, central vacuums, bathroom fans, hood fans over the stove, clothes dryers. By exhausting air outside, you are pulling in outside air.
Use the comments below to ask questions, share local road/smoke updates, and link official updates.

META Upcoming Civic Election - please read
The Kelowna civic election is happening in October and we are happy to be a venue for discussions about candidates and platforms.
To that end, we will be offering all approved candidates an opportunity to do an AMA but only after the final candidate list is announced in September.
We will be removing any submissions related to discussions of candidates until we know the list you will have to choose from (so after the list if published).
This pinned post will be updated with AMA schedules etc as we get closer to the date. Thanks for your understanding and participation. Looking forward to some great interactions between locals and candidates!

News Mayor urges Health Canada to deny license Renewal for Downtown Supervised Consumption site
Posted on the Mayor's Facebook page:
There’s nothing safe about a site that creates disorder for the surrounding community. On behalf of Kelowna City Council, I am asking Health Canada to deny the renewal of the federal authorization for the supervised consumption site at Outreach Urban Health downtown.
Since the site opened in 2021, there have been 3,466 RCMP calls for service related to the site or its immediate surroundings, along with 371 medical incidents, 24 outdoor fires and 420 calls for bylaw service beyond routine daily interventions.
We cannot continue accepting these impacts on public safety in our downtown. People struggling with addiction deserve real pathways to treatment and recovery. And the people who live, work and run businesses downtown deserve to feel safe.
It’s time to shut down a site that is not working and prioritize treatment, recovery and mandatory compassionate care for those who need it most.

Recycling 3D Printing Filament
Do any of you other 3d printing enthusiasts recycle your scrap filament? If so, how, and do they only accept certain types of filament?
I am mostly interested in local options but if you go through the whole process of shipping it away somewhere I'd be interested in combining parcels and sharing shipping (I'm not very active thus I don't produce much scrap).
Thanks

Magic the gathering players needed for casual draft and constructed nights.
Relatively new to Kelowna. Long time MtG player looking to get back into it with others to do casual group events like drafts and constructed (non-commander) events.
My work schedule doesn't let me attend the events at places like Quantum Games and the ones I can attend are usually Commander which I'm not a fan of.
Some ideas I have are private booster drafts. i.e. Buying a box, chipping in to cover costs and having a night of it with pizza and drinks. I'm not a competitive person so it's all for the game-night vibes.
If that seems up your alley, message me.

Does anyone want to see Weird Al with me on Wednesday Sept 2?
Hi all.
I have 2 tickets to Weird Al on Wednesday, but the friend I was going to go with booked a trip to Mexico (we bought the tickets last November so I can't really blame her for forgetting!). Anyway, everyone I know either already has tickets or isn't interested. So I have a spare ticket if anyone wants to join me - free! No strings attached, I just would rather see the ticket used than wasted. DM me if you're into weird music just for fun!
Edit to specify no charge for the ticket.
Edit2 - haha thanks! Someone took it and we're gonna have an awesomeeeeee time! :)

Beginner music producer looking for people to connect with!
Hey! I’m a beginner music producer in Kelowna and I’m looking to connect with other people who are also just starting out (or even a little ahead of me).
I’m learning Ableton and currently have a mentor to help me learn. I love high- energy festival EDM/ techno/ acid
Honestly, I’m still VERY much figuring things out 😂 so it would be awesome to meet people who are in the same boat. I’d love to share what we’re working on, bounce ideas off each other, learn together, maybe eventually collaborate or just nerd out about music
If you’re in Kelowna (or even just want to connect online), feel free to comment or message me

Looking for a reasonably priced detailer.
Does anybody know a good detailer in Kelowna? I spilt some food all over my back seat on my way home from a family potluck yesterday. I had someone coming this morning but they were a no show. I've tried a few others but no one seems to answer their phone or they're severly over priced.

Looking for Board Game/Tabletop players
Hey there, I'm looking to start a group for pickup board games(Root, Slay the Spire, Twilight Imperium, etc.) and the dedicated Facebook Groups have been far from successful at this point.
I've got a chat group with a handful of people, but I think more people are needed to get traction going.
Anyone know of already existing groups, or where I should look to find more participants?
Thanks!

Anyone enjoying this rain as much as I am?
Besides bringing moisture to a record-setting drought, it’s also finally bringing borderline comfortable temperatures. I can actually sit outside for the first time in months without needing to carry a sweat towel.
Now if only this held for another 40 days, we could be back at normal precipitation levels, and the drought could be over. Well, for the winter at least. We still need a massive snowpack going into next spring.

Loud Bang heard in the Hollydell area at 2am
Anyone else hear or know what that very loud bang was in Rutland at 2am tonight. In-between the areas of Gerstmar, Ziprick and Springfield Rd. Almost sounded like a propane cannon going off but there are none in the area. I haven't heard anything this loud before in the area. Initially woke up to it thinking it was an explosion. Definitely louder than fireworks.

PSA International Voter Registration Drive 2026, for dual Canadian-U.S. citizens in Kelowna
Hi, I'd like to post a message from Democrats Abroad in BC. This is the second (and final) reminder I'll make for dual Canadian-US citizens and other eligible US voters who want to participate in the 2026 American midterm elections, especially for those living in and around Kelowna. Democrats Abroad in Canada is dedicated to mobilizing overseas US voters; if you're over 18 by November 3, here's how you can get involved:
Steps to Request Your Ballot
Register or update your registration through Votefromabroad.org. As an alternative, you can also use FVAP.gov.
If you're already registered, request a ballot! You need to request a ballot every calendar year that you want to vote.
Fill Out and Return Your Ballot: Once you receive your ballot, follow the instructions carefully to complete it and return it by the specified deadline.
Need Assistance?
We're here to help! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at GOTV @ votefromabroad .org (just remove the spaces). Additionally, our FAQ for voting can answer questions on how to make the process go smoothly.
Importantly: Spread the word!
Do you have any friends, contacts or family overseas that you could reach? All eligible US citizens can vote regardless of where they're living. Share the link https://voteabroad.org/RedditVote26: If you have any questions about voting, I'd be happy to answer them here on Reddit. You can also find out what we're doing near you at Democrats Abroad. Thanks for reading!

The spark social club
Has anyone been to any of their events? I'm just curious what they're like. From their instagram it looks like the events are for friend making as well as dating.
I'm just curious what the event itself is actually like. Is it similar to speed dating where everybody rotates through and talks to each other or is it just one big mingle?
