I got cold called early on in one of my big doctrinal classes. When it happened, I thought "wow terrible luck, of course I got called early." BUT I'm realizing it's a huge blessing. The class is so big that I probably won't get called again (you get taken off the list once you're called, and the class is so big I probably won't get put back on). So now I can read for understanding what I need to know, rather than trying to sound smart in class lol. It also opens up more time for my other classes so I can prioritize differently. Good stuff.

Hi! Currently a 1L at a mid-ranked t14. I’ve never been in a rigorous academic setting before (my undergrad major was philosophy at an extremely low ranked school) so I’m kind of freaking out that I’m going to be completely blindsided once exam grades come out? Has that been the experience for a lot of you? I don’t really mind where I end up but I would like to get a feel for what to expect.

I’ve heard the statistic that 90% of the class things they’ll be in the top 50% etc. which is also why I’m asking.

Starting off Week 2 of my 1L year and OH MY GOD. I feel like in every class, the entire lecture gets sidetracked by rounds of hypotheticals completely unrelated to the topic we’re covering.

I’m 100% pro asking questions, especially those related to the case, since it helps get a better understanding of the full picture. These questions may even answer things you didn’t know you didn’t understand.

My problem lies with the fact that I feel like in nearly every lecture, our discussion strays so far from the topics at hand, with so many different “what if…hypothetically” that we end up in a totally different section of the law that we haven’t learned. Because of this, we’re often given an answer than we don’t have the knowledge/law behind the “why” which leads to just more hypotheticals.

It honestly makes me feel even more confused about the cases, since we’re spending time addressing legal issues we haven’t yet learned about, and have no knowledge of the law on yet, and I leave feeling frustrated since we didn’t actually end up covering in depth the topic of law we were reading about. Instead, more than half of class was spend covering hypotheticals that we don’t have the legal background to understand yet, BUT WE WOULD HAVE IF PEOPLE JUST WAITED TO LEARN.

Am I justified for feeling so irritated? Does it get better? Is this just an issue in my school or is this honestly just the truth of law school?

Florida and Texas, as red states, have removed ABA accreditation as a requirement to take their bar exam. Could this mean law schools like Purdue Global with California and Higher Learning Commission accreditations would lead to students being able to take bar exams there?

Title says it all. I hadn’t used Westlaw for a couple of weeks, but now that I’m on it again why did they redesign the homepage? Why is the AI research top the page above the content types? Preferences don’t seem to let me get rid of it.

I’m personally trying to keep my 1BR1BA as minimal as possible with furniture because I don’t see myself staying in the area longer than 1-2 years and I absolutely HATE moving heavy/bulky furniture.

The goal is to have all furniture be as lightweight as possible while still being sturdy and aesthetically pleasing enough to not look like one of those derelict posts on [r/MaleLivingSpace](r/MaleLivingSpace). Also….. why the hell is even lightweight and minimalist furniture so damn expensive….

It's only week two and I fully understand why everyone says this is the hardest course in law school.

Just want to vent. This person next to me will not stop making comments during the lecture. He thinks he is Nick Mullen. Everything is a bit. Nothing he says has been funny at all. I am the only one who can hear his stupid fucking comments, and it makes me want to crash out.

Is anyone else struggling to find a routine? It’s my third week & I’m already so tired. I’m not using my time efficiently. I find that I’m unintentionally spending too much time in a class or not enough in another. It also takes me FOREVER to do all the readings. I’ve been switching up my reading/note-taking routine to see what works best & I’ve gotten slightly faster this week but I’m still so slow.

I haven’t been to the gym since before orientation. I’ve been sleeping and eating terribly. Many of my classmates seem to always be prepared & look so put together at the same time. It feels like I’m one of the few who aren’t acclimating well. Are there any other 1L’s who feel the same? If you’re a 2L/3L how long would you say it took you to figure out a routine that worked? When will it get better??? Thanks 🥹🩷

I am currently going through my second week of 1L and grieving a loss of someone I deeply loved. it’ll be a year soon and I seem to be dwelling on it more and more. The stress of law school on top of other responsibilities is piling on me. I am truly humbled at how hard it is hitting me and everything is starting to feel overwhelming to an incredibly unmanageable degree.

I know there are student resources and help out there, but I would like to hear it from someone who has or is going through it. How do you deal?

And no I cannot take another year off.

I really enjoy Freer’s Civ Pro videos on Barbri. The way he laid out personal jurisdiction made a lot of sense to me. Are there any other videos that teach Torts and Contracts concepts with a similar “easy to understand” format?

I'm a current 3L at a T20. Due to reasons I cannot list without doxxing myself, my location for post-graduation recently changed. I assumed I was going to be in a different city for my first two years of law school, and now I plan on being in a separate location entirely. I have already met with my career office discussing this change and on their advice have been in contact with multiple alumni in the new location I will be moving to (Raleigh-Durham area, NC).

I am cold-calling and cold-emailing most of the firms in the area, as well as connecting with these former alumni I mentioned. If anyone has advice on other things to do, please let me know. I know I could always wait until I pass the Bar to get a job, but I would prefer to have something lined up for the waiting period between taking the Bar and receiving my license.

For reference, I'm mainly interested in criminal law (prosecution or private defense), family law, or personal injury.

Has anyone here had experience with closed book exams for civil procedure? Our exam bank only has open book examples, and I am very curious as to how a closed book exam prompt (or answer expectation) may or may not differ from that of open book.

Just a genuine question, even tho most of the politicians, leaders and diplomats around the world has a degree in law, is it still worth it?

We're still learning about arbitration in law school, so i'm not really familiar with the topic. But I really wanted to publish something on it, so i was wondering if there are any that i can write about.

I genuinely am struggling to keep up w the readings and I’m
not even doing full case briefs like I see others doing. I am only half following what’s going on in class, or when I do follow it I often still don’t get what takeaway I’m supposed to be extracting from a given case or discussion.

I am seriously questioning if I should be here and if I’ll be able to get through this semester. I anticipate my mental health starting to suffer if I spend all day every day doing readings that I can barely process. Not to mention big law recruiting starts in the fall now for 2L SA roles, idk how I’m gonna find the time. Does it really get better? I’m starting to really worry. Is anyone else feeling like this or remember feeling like this at the start of 1L?
