I just started a French study/course and I’m looking for books and (tv)shows/movies to pick up more of the sounds and writing to really “get in there”.

I’ve studied French in high school and I’ve done self-study every here and then because I adore French/France, so I do know the overall basics and I can understand quite a bit out of context and basic knowledge.

I would love to hear your recommendations or any other tips/advice is welcome too!

I’ve read up on it and the answers have varied a bit but seem to me in Metropolitan French you growl it more

•When it’s the beginning of the word or syllable
•When it’s after a consonant like C, V, T, B, D, G
•In dramatic/emotional/formal speech or emphasizing something

But the more I listen to French speakers I feel the less I hear a pattern and it almost appears to me to vary by the individual. The other day I watched an interview of a 20 something French person who growled the heck out of the R in D’accord for instance. I feel less sure about when to emphasize it as time passes.

I love the sound but I’d hate to do it incorrectly or overdo it. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm currently retaking elementary class (French 112) to get comfortable with speaking, it's very helpful but we only get a limited amount of speaking time. Looking for a partner who enjoys structured work and consistency. We will practice the mock conversations in Horizons, 1-2 pages per day or whatever fits our level. I can send you weekly screenshots of the chapter we will be going over if you don't have the material.

I'm aiming for 15-30 mins everyday, we will start with quick greeting and dive right into the practice, take turns asking and answering. No personal information will be exchanged and you don't have to use your real name of course.

For example in a word like "confortable" (/kɔ̃.fɔʁ.tabl/), am I right in thinking in fast speech the /ʁ/ can become very subtle compared to the /ʁ/ in a word where it comes after a consonant?

Also could anyone tell me if this /ʁ/ is voiced or unvoiced?

I've been studying French for a while now. I'm pretty good a reading and writing at a B1-B2 level, but I cannot form a sentence spontaneously. I would have to sit and think for a bit to even come up with something. I'm very good at pronunciation, but I just can't have a good conversation.

I also don't have any opportunity to practice. I've had bad experiences with my French friends online, so I've been trying to find a native speaker to practice with who isn't secretly a bad person, and who is also around my age (19-21). I also have bad OCD, and I ruminate heavily on any mistakes I make even though nobody cares.

I would appreciate advice on how to actually speak without looking stupid.

Besides taking an exam, are there any noticeable tells which could distinguish someone from speaking/utilizing French at a C1 level compared to a B2 level?

I have French in my graduation course which I am starting this year. But I will not be able to take my classes as the timing clashes with my Asian Culture classes. But the issue is the course book doesn't have any single translation and no online videos on it are there. I am attaching my sllybus and it also contains the textbook name so help to learn the language and also not fail my exams. The sllybus contains much more but I only have to study certain papers which are: Paper 1, Paper 3, Paper 5, Paper 7.

I'm about to take the TCF for the 1st time in about a week 🤞🏼

I have a few questions about the TCF Compréhension Orale section: what is the format of the questions? For example, most of the practice tests I've done off the internet, in the first few questions the options are in the audio and the written multiple choice are just A, B, C, D - and you pick the corresponding one. Then in other questions, there is more text in the written multiple choice options. Is this similar to the actual test? How much time do you have to read each of the options?

Additionally, what order do the sections happen in, like CO, CE, EE, then EO - is there a set order for all tests?

Also, for anyone who has taken the TEF and TCF, what has been your experience? Which one did you prefer? Is it true that one is harder than the other?

Does anyone else get pretty frustrated at times with a perceived lack of progress or difficulté in expressing ideas etc at around the B1 level?

I started having 1-2-1 conversation classes online with a teacher in July. It’s been incredibly helpful (although my head used to hurt afterwards as I just wasn’t used to speaking in French.)

I can use the passé composé and l’imparfait reasonably well and express ideas/préférences but I often get frustrated as I can’t quite articulate things they way I want to.

I feel like I’m at the stage where I can easily express opions on a wide range of subjects but its frustrating because my vocab isn’t quite there for some of the topics I want to talk about.

Is this common at this level? My teacher says I’m a solid B1 but I feel frustrated with myself!

Hey! I'm looking for a few people to test a little project I'm working on (completely free, of course).

The idea is pretty simple: you give the app a song in the language you're learning, and it generates a little language course from it: vocabulary, expressions, grammar, pronunciation, etc.

But then it takes it a step further: after the lesson, you actually have a conversation with the app using what you just learned from the song.

I've always found that I remember phrases much better when I hear them in music, so I thought it would be fun to build something around that.

It's still very early, so I'm mainly looking for honest feedback from people who don't mind trying something that's a work in progress 😅

What’s the best way to use these stories to improve my French?

This sentence: “Vous vous attendez à ce que je parle de glaces et non pas de croissants.” (If you’re a OTIAFD listener you might recognize it!) Why is it “à ce que” instead of just “que”? What is the grammar point here that I’m missing?

I have been trying to learn French using Duolingo for the past two years. Recently I have added other things to try to speed up the learning process. My weakness is understanding spoken French. So.... I decided to try watching movies in French. I just watched the first episode of Little House on the Prairie dubbed in French and with French subtitles. I figured this would be a good place to start because I read all the books when I was a child so I get the gist of what's going on. It's pitiful though how little I actually understood of what they were saying. Without the captions I would have likely been totally lost even though it moves at a slow pace.

Any recommendations how I might approach watching movies/TV shows? Should I hit the pause buttons when I encounter words I don't know? Look them up and write them down? Should I just go with the flow and see how much I begin to absorb over time?

Question aux expatriés en France : comment avez-vous réussi à tenir une conversation de tous les jours avec des Français ?
Je suis japonais et ça fait environ un an que je vis en France. Je suis parti de zéro en français, donc j'ai tout appris sur place, mais c'est une galère quotidienne.
Pour la lecture et l'écriture, ça va à peu près quand je prends mon temps. Par contre, dès qu'il s'agit de parler en face à face, le niveau monte d'un cran. Quand j'essaie d'exprimer ce que je veux dire, je commence par « Je... », puis je bloque pour chercher mes mots et construire ma phrase dans ma tête. Au final, je sors des phrases plus lentes que celles d'un enfant, avec de la grammaire et une prononciation complètement bancales. Rien n'est fluide ni naturel comme dans ma langue maternelle, tout me prend un temps fou.
Résultat : j'ai souvent droit à des grimaces ou à des « Chais pas » / « J'comprends pas » de la part des gens, et à chaque fois, ça me démolit mon assurance.
C'est peut-être une question de culture, mais j'ai l'impression qu'on attend beaucoup plus de sociabilité ici qu'au Japon. Les repas entre amis ou en famille sont super fréquents. J'aimerais vraiment participer aux discussions, apprendre à connaître les autres et me faire connaître, mais je n'y arrive pas.
Je serais curieux de connaître vos retours d'expérience ou vos conseils si vous êtes passés par là !

I was curious if using coursera is a good idea, will the certificate be valid if i study till A1 or A2 instead of B1 or B2 for canadian unis as an extra curricular or french proficiency. And online it says i can cram and complete the course in one weekend if anyone has taken it can they guide me
