General Discussion 7 Spell Theory (of Commander)
I was giving a newer player advice on building a Commander deck, and I had a thought. You could say that a modern (Bracket 3) Commander deck is made up of seven spells, plus lands and your commander.
(Bear with me here.)
Nowadays, every Commander deck is made up of:
- Sol Ring
- Opt
- Swords to Plowshares
- Fog
- A 2-3 card combo
- 0-1 pet cards
That's a deliberately provocative way of putting it. I think that it captures an important idea in an easy-to-remember fashion, however:
Commander games have become quite fast. The first 3-4 turns matter. At the same time, the card pool has become huge, and there are a lot of spells that do the same thing.
By turn three, you will have drawn ~10 cards. That gives you an even chance of seeing a card with 10 "copies" in the 99 (e.g., 1 in 10 cards in your deck is like that card). You want to run ~10 ramp spells (cards like Sol Ring), ~10 card draw/card selection spells (cards like Opt), ~10 pieces of interaction (cards like StP), ~5 pieces of mass interaction (cards like Fog), and 30+ cards that support or pay off your commander. Often that 30+ "plan" part of the deck is split into three sets of 10-12 similar cards -- a "three-card combo," where I'm using "combo" very loosely.
Your commander can stand in for one of the seven cards, allowing you to run more copies of the other six. Or it can add a fourth card to the "combo/pet" section.
This means that you can make a Bracket 3 Commander deck by laying out your seven spells, then piling cards that do basically the same thing on top of them. The shorter the pile, the less consistent that part of your deck will be. Piles taller than 10-12 cards are good candidates for winnowing. To up the Bracket of the deck, focus down the combo part, beef up the interaction part, and add a lot of tutors/mill. Bracket 1 & 2 decks get to run more than seven spells (what luxury!).
What do you think? Is that a useful way of framing deck building? Or a cruel, cynical breakdown of how un-Highlander the format once known as Elder Dragon Highlander has become?
