Nicol Bolas the forever serpent laughs at your weakness. Gain the tools and knowledge to enhance your game and overcome tough obstacles.
---
Welcome to the latest Monday Newcomer Thread, where you, the community, get to ask your questions and share your knowledge. This is an opportunity for the more experienced Magic players here to share some of your wisdom with those with less expertise. This thread will be a weekly safe haven for those *noobish* questions you may have been too scared to ask for fear of downvotes, but can also be a great place for in-depth discussion if you so wish. So, don't hold back, get your game related questions ready and post away, and hopefully, someone can answer them!
Please feel free to ask questions about deckbuilding and anything Magic related in our daily thread; and we always welcome effortful stand alone posts with new ideas or discussion points.
Finally, please visit Tibalt's Friday Tirade for all your ranting/venting needs. Do not spam this thread with complaints.

What you can do to help?
This is a weekly thread, meaning it will be posted once a week. Checking back on this thread later in the week and answering any questions that have been posted would be a huge help!
If you're trying to ask a question, the more specific you are, the better it is for all of us! We can't give you any help if we don't get much to work with in the first place.

Discussion Fae Fox Pet
My expression when I win with an absolute Jank deck.
Jokes aside, I know there are quite a few people who love cosmetics as much as I do (and a lot who don't care or even hate them), so I thought a quick headsup.
If you run into a [[The Infamous Cruelclaw]] deck with this pet, that's me, say hello.

Information I fell into the trap - just a warning to others don't buy brawl precons.
So I really enjoy the food and fellowship precon IRL, and I figured hey it's in the shop, I can afford it why not! About 17-20 matches later and not even remotely close to a win, I can say money well wasted. Just a friendly reminder, do not buy store brawl precons, they are a trap!

Underrated Budget Dual Lands in Standard
I want to make a case for the cycle of budget lands that I think are underplayed in Standard at the moment. That cycle is the "13 of less life" (thirteenland) duals from Duskmourn. (https://scryfall.com/search?q=otag%3Acycle-dsk-thirteenland). If you are playing a slower, grindy deck such as control or midrange I argue these lands are quite good in a budget deck. Against aggro decks you will often be behind and in trouble on the early turns. In these cases having the land enter untapped without paying life (as compared to non-budget shock lands) is huge. It is functionally equivalent to the non-budget slow lands cycle in these cases. Conversely against other slow decks, yes the land enters tapped but if you aren't under tremendous pressure that's not the end of the world.
I will even run a copy or two of these lands in non-budget decks because at the moment Standard only has half of the cycle of slow lands (https://scryfall.com/search?q=is%3Aslowland+f%3Astandard&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name). So in a 2 color deck after the surveil lands, shock lands, and verge lands if I still need more duals and slow lands aren't in my deck's colors, I will add a copy or two of these "13 or less life" duals.
I hope you'll consider when putting the manabase together for your next deck.

Question Anyone here play Alchemy?
I've been grinding a lot of standard and brawl but the meta gets a little boring once you reach diamond. I just saw that Alchemy is on a 2 year rotation and the new cards at least offer some entertainment value. Anyone have any tips and which sets have the best Alchemy cards? I know bloomburrow rotates pretty soon.

Discussion Any alternatives to Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines?
Specifically the denial aspect of the card. I get torpor stone is more or less the same effect for creatures, but is there a more blanket version like Elesh's? Realistically i am looking for an alternative to her (and white).

Fluff Just started played Magic one week ago
I debated for god knows how long that I should try to play this game. I'm old enough to remember when it first came out.
I finally downloaded Arena last week to give it a go and all I have to say is - wow, I should have done this a long time ago! This game is amazing. Arena does a great job onboarding. I've already put together a deck that has been really good through lower levels of standard ranked. I haven't even tried the other variants or any events other than jump in. Collecting cards and crafting decks is as much fun as playing. Though... I'm totally at a loss reading through reddit when it comes to meta deck discussion.
Anyway, though I'd share so you can remember what it's like to look at this game through new eyes. You only fall in love once.

Discussion What is the best mode for playing jank decks?
I am tired of anything related to the standard. The same 5 decks over and over. I am also tired of having to play the same boring meta decks to have fun, so I'm hoping to find modes that encourage jank decks!

Fluff False Advertising in Mixed-Up Premier Standard Draft (September 4–18) The packs contain mostly non-standard cards
This is how the new draft is advertised:
For those who prefer their draft environments to be a bit spicier, we're holding a Mixed-Up Premier Standard Draft from September 4–18! In a Mixed-Up Standard Draft, you'll draft from packs containing cards from a variety of Standard-legal sets to create a deck and battle other players in ranked, Best-of-One matches for a fun, unpredictable event.
Reality:
In the packs I received most extremely old cards that have not been standard for years! I was hoping for cards that are Standard NOW as they said! I can't use any of these cards!

Question Looking for some playable timeless lands lists
Ive played a bit with a vintage lands lists and want to recreate that kind of experience on mtga. I know that there’s a lot of missing utility from format to format but any good lists out there?

Fluff Trophy from Secrets of Strixhaven
Woo! Just got my first draft trophy in MONTHS. After a few 3-3, 0-3 runs in SOS and HOB before, I’m proud to say pulled a trophy jamming B/G aggro.
I got the tip from another redditor who said they’d miss HOB quick draft, where they could easily jam B/G aggro, because the AI often skipped black in the pool. By the time I logged on SOS quick draft was up, but lo and behold the strategy still worked lol
Started off 0-2 and was really expecting to go 3-3 at best, but the lifegain combo worked out well. I got the sign posts for golgari: 2 [[pest mascot]] 2 [[bogwater lumaret]] an [[old-growth educator]] and [[moseo]] who came in clutch for my last 3 wins. being able to recur [[mindful biomancer]], [[thornfist striker]], and even the mascot at the end of the turn was CLUTCH.
The secret fav that pulled me out of the 0-2 hole was [[leech collector]]. collector plus lumaret is a nasty combo. 2 damage each turn for 1 black adds up fast.

Bug Bug: Can't zoom cards in deck builder (Mobile)
When I'm on my phone, building/editing a deck, I can't zoom (press and hold the card) on any cards in the pool of cards. Once the card is in the deck, I can zoom the cards there, but the cards I haven't added to the deck aren't, zoomable. I
s anyone else having this issue?
I'm stunned I haven't seen anyone else talking about this, I'm hoping that means the bug is somehow on me. Still, I have no idea how to fix it. I'm open to suggestions.
Anyone else?

Discussion Why don’t more people play Azorius auras in standard? I think it’s alot better/more resilient then mono white auras
Here’s my deck list. Entity tracker draws cards whenever you cast any enchantment/room, you’ve got the 2 drop enchantment creature that procs eerie on etb and lowers the cost of all enchantment by 1, gremlin tamer to make a huge board whenever you cast auras/enchantments, blue Itself has some good auras and you’ve got counter magic and things like get out to protect your creatures and enchantments in the case of removal or board wipes.
Mono white aura decks aren’t resilient. If they remove your board the deck gets shut down. Azorius seems to be the move I’d love to hear people’s thoughts though! Also feedback on my deck thanks!

Fluff I will miss Hobbit limited
Yes black is way OP, but this is definitely the only format I’ve done where you can quick draft, make almost no drafting decisions, and clean sweep all 7 games within an hour or two when the format ends in 3 hours. Never played a card that cost more than 3 mana in all 7 games.
A little bit of /s because it’s broken and I don’t really love that. But I actually like the set and will miss Hobbit when it’s completely forgotten in a couple months.

Discussion Why isn’t bant control played more in standard?
I despise jeskai control I’m so tired of seeing it so I decided to go a different route. I like making/playing off meta decks that are still competitive so I made a bant control deck. It’s got the same interaction/card draw of Jeskai and Azorius control with green splashed in for ramp/more artifact/enchantment removal for all those pesky tablets and annex’s.
Overlord of the hauntwoods can be played for 3 mana giving you an everything land which ramps you and m can tap for any color. Combine that with biblioplex and cornucopia and casting together as one for the full 5 colors is very easy. Also gives you a big blocker mid to late game that can ramp you even more when it attacks.
Bant has access to dopplegang also which is another great finisher. Also has access to wistfulness which is a personal favorite of mine.
Here is my deck list! Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts/opinions and get some honest feedback thanks!
