If the Marvel universe was firmly a period piece (prior to the 2000s) which modern character's origin would suffer the most?

I have already made up my mind. It's Screwball. She's functionally useless without social media. Take her anywhere before the 2000s, before you could download a PNG image in less than 2 minutes and she's screwed as a character. Stuntwomen exist long before social media but the beauty of this character is rooted in her being an internet clout chaser.

And yes this question was made as a response to all the "update the origin of Magneto in modern day" posts. Let's ask the opposite question instead.

My biggest frustration with comics!

I started reading comics in the mid-2000s, discovered the classic Avengers, and explored everything that existed up to that point! I discovered all the problems surrounding what is, for me, my favorite Marvel character to this day, and also my favorite villain: Hank Pym and Ultron! How I love these characters, because they involve a psychology that has always fascinated me! And how outraged and sad I am with what they did to this character, who was reduced to a ridiculous stigma and, in another version, transformed into an exaggerated caricature, just to generate controversy, of what Hank NEVER WAS!

At the time, I watched the animated series The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, simply the best adaptation of the character, and I thought that finally he would have his redemption in the eyes of the public. But I couldn't have been more wrong. The cancellation of the series left his entire arc with Janet incomplete.

When the MCU emerged, I was intrigued about how the character would be adapted for the films, and they simply erased him, removing all the importance and potential he could have had. What anger and sadness this causes me! The Ultron adaptation COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE RIDICULOUS.

It's been a while since I've followed comics, but I believe Hank is still the ridiculous creature Marvel turned him into. The blame lies entirely with the publisher for never doing anything right with the character, and whenever someone tried, the publisher blocked it, just to maintain the controversy! The general public will never know the genius and potential this character could have had if the publisher hadn't been cowardly and a disaster in approaching this character!

I just read Dr Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment for the first time, and I am in awe of it.

The story was wonderfully written, the art was incredible, and Doom & Strange’s coexistence was so fun to read through. This is the most frightening I’ve seen Mephisto. And the climax was beyond what I even imagined. I. think it needs to be talked about more.

Marvel needs to make push more female solo comics. I think magik might be thier greatest asset to do this .

Looking at this list , almost every single character is a part of team , be it the avengers or x men . While the x men are very important and tend to give these characters a lot exposure and a lot of justice , it is a bit sad that they often don’t go through thier own solo runs , compare it to Wonder Woman who exists in the league and also on her own. I think marvel has already identified the solution. Magik

Illyana has just recently become a household name due to marvel rivals and Anya Taylor joys portrayal. If marvel play thier cards right , she could become top 5 if not top 3 female characters in marvel in general. Her genre is already so marketable and her story leaves a lot of room for growth. I think illyana. Might get the Harley Quinn treatment where she’s just put in a bunch of things becoming wayy more popular.

Also it’s a goth baddie half mutant half demon with a big sword. Like … come on .

Trying to read the OG Ultimateverse starting with Spider-Man is easier than 616 so that is what I am doing. Next on my list is Ultimate Marvel Team-Up (2001) #1

Getting into comics

Hi im currently getting into comics and this is a list of the recommendations I have already and continuation of things I have already read. The blue is just comics I could easily go buy whenever I please because they're in my somewhat local comic shop. Obviously this is very ambitious so I will be completing this list over like 5 years before I start a new list.

So far in marvel all I have read is ultimate spidey vol. 1 (new)

In DC I have read superman: birthright, all star superman, Batman hush, long Halloween, and half of new frontier

In indie I have read half of walking dead compendium one and some of invincible

I just want to know if there are anymore recs or any other books I should read before some of these.

X-Men (1963-1981) Silver Age Book Club: Issue 4

Preamble: For years I've heard about how bad the original pre-Claremont X-men comics are, but recently I've decided to check them out for myself. When looking up discussions on these early issues after reading them, I found there wasn't a lot of content out there, so I thought I'd see if there was any interest on here of reading it together (or reminiscing for those who've read them in the past) and discussing the peculiarities of each issue together. With that in mind, if there's any interest, I'm going to post these till I burn out, people lose interest, or some one else takes over. So far engagement has been low, but I've appreciated every comment I've gotten:

Synopsis: After celebrating their 1 year anniversary at Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters, we're introduced to 4 new mutants who are working for Magneto. After trying and failing to convince Xavier to have him and his x-men join the Brotherhood via a psychic conversation, Magneto and the 4 members he does have capture and occupy Santo Marco. The X-men, including the professor head to Santo Marco and battle the brother hood. Professor X sacrifices himself for Beast, surviving but losing his mutant powers in the process, then Quick Silver saves the rest of the team from a nuclear bomb Magneto had set off before fleeing that would have wiped the x-men and the professor out.

Notes:

- This now makes the X-men arguably 0-4 in their first 4 issues, they lost to the Vanisher, they lost to the Blob repeatedly, and this time they lost to the brotherhood and needed one of them to come back to save them. The closest thing to a win was issue 1, but even there its not clear they could have defeated Magneto who was having his way with them before he decided to retreat after taking a single blow from Cyclops.

- It's not entirely clear to me if the 1 year anniversary they celebrate is from when Jean joined, from prior to her joining, or if when she joined was actually the beginning for the entire team? Everyone appeared to be well acquainted and trained prior to Jean's arrival, so the third option seems highly unlikely but from the way he talks about it, also the more reasonable interpretation. Maybe she was just late arriving? If the annivnesary is from her joining, that means we've gone through a full year in just 3 issues. Wild for a series whose characters would later age at a glacial pace.

- The story makes it very clear right away that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver want no part of Magneto's plans, but then we get a 2 panel back story explaining Magneto once saved Wanda's life and as such she's apparently decided to just be Magneto's slave for the rest of her life to pay him back, and Quick Silver is staying around just to protect her. What the 2 panel back story doesn't do is really clarify why Scarlet Witch couldn't have defended herself, or just, like, run away. Or where he brother was when all this was happening. Or why Magneto was present. Or why Wanda is literally dedicating the rest of her life to this clearly deranged stranger, rather then just helping him once and then moving on.

- This is yet another story where a non-insignificant chunk of it is spent watching their individual danger room trainings. I feel like Stan and or Jack really wanted to make it clear this is a school, so we needed time spent learning every issue, just the learning is how to survive life or death situations.

- Jean walks Professor X around, holding the back of his chair, through out the issue. It's never clear why she's been given this task, but we never see anyone else do it so its clearly just her responsibility. With out explanation, it feels a bit misogynistic.

- The Mastermind has big incel energy in all his interactions with the Scarlet Witch, including referring to her as a "female".

- The Scarlet Witch reveals she controls how much of her power goes into her "bad luck" causing powers after Quicks Silver is worried about her using them on Mastermind.

- The Brotherhood of Mutants initially only refer to Magneto as "The Leader" in all bold. While this might have been a way to keep the fact their leader is Magneto a secret for a later reveal... he's literally on the cover...

- Speaking of the cover, Scarlet Witch is green instead of her usual pink on the cover. Perhaps Kirby was concerned she'd clash too much with Magneto's Red and purple?

- Magneto sees Angel fly by their ship in the middle of the ocean and mistakes him for a Seagull.

- This issue really drives home that Angel's defining trait is his cockiness:

- When angel returns and tells Professor X that he saw a fast moving ship with no crew, Professor X declares he has a hunch there's something strange about it... because I guess freighters zooming along in the middle of the ocean with no crew aren't normally suspicious.

- Just so we're clear, there's literally no reason for Angel to have stumbled upon Magneto's ship in the middle of the vast ocean. Perhaps he has a secondary mutation of super luck? Maybe Professor X's secondary mutation is super hunches?

- While the professor's initial "hunch" was more a reasonable inference, his later hunch that the only person in the entire world who would take over Santo Marco are mutants, now that's impressive. It's also not entirely clear why he believes there is more then just Magneto now since they haven't revealed themselves yet and just formed in this issue, which we saw happen.-

-Later in the issue Professor X is surprised to detect other mutans with Magneto making his earlier "The Evil Mutants" line even more confusing.

- Magneto is shown to have psychic powers for the firs time in this issue, though its implied Xaviers are greater.

- Also, unlike the X-men whose identies are hidden, Professor Xaviers is not, who he is and where he lives and works is public knowledge, yet he tells Magneto he will never tell him where he is, as if that's a secret, while he sits in his chair in his head master's chair in his school with his name on said school...

- Also it's not Magneto, but Professor X who immediately jumps to threatening to kill the other, and have his students kill Magneto's team, the moment Magneto refuses to join Professor X. In a kind of deranged looking panel no less.

- Speaking of that panel, Xavier's eyes are now blue again, as they were in issue 2, instead of green as they were in issue 1, or being colorless hypno-wheel swirls as they were in issue 3. The blue is consistent through out the issue, so at least this issue they definitely wanted them blue. Magneto's, which had been blue in his only previous apperance, issue 1, now appear to be white. Master minds are also clearly green, and beasts are shown as blue. No one else has an obvious tint to them.

- Some how Cyclops is able to roll bodies with his beam.

- Also apparently Cyclops beam comes out so slowly Magneto has time to duck under it.

- Some how Professor X, from clear across the room, is able to beat Beast and Angel who were several yards ahead of him, to a trapped door by diving out of his chair.

- "How is he?' "His brain seems to be affected!" "His BRAIN?? But--That's his greatest weapon!" This is actual dialogue from the after math of professor x knocking beast out of the way and taking the bront of the explosion.

- After the explosion Professor X tells the team to leave him because he's no good to them anymore with out his mutant mental power. We will later learn in a future issue that this is all him acting more injured then he was to test them... but seriously? Did he really think they would just leave him? He was presumably genuinely injured, even if he had his powers, if they had left him, he'd have been trapped, and forced to reveal himself to some one using his psychic powers to get help. Seems like kind of insane gambit of a test, but I guess he's got no issues at this point just wiping his rescuers mind after ward?

Final Thoughts: I know I commented on this before, but its honestly kind of refreshing just how ineffectual the X-men are in these early issues. They don't ever triumph, they buy time for some one to save them or choose to leave on their own.

Having the professor lose his powers at the end was also a fun twist for so early in the series, even if it didn't totally make sense, and even if him being taken out of action because of how OP his abilities are would become over used over the years, this was the first time, and it just kind of happens, with no build up.

Also just from a premise stand point, given how much trouble the x-men had in 5 on 1s in previous issues, including against just Magneto alone, having a whole team of mutants, all of which, except the Toad, have pretty terrifying powers, it's a strong concept.

Ultimately this is primarily an action fest, and magneto is once again over the top cartoonishly evil to the point its not clear why anyone would follow him, but those caveats aside, I thought this was another decent read.

Score: 7/10

With that in mind, if there's any interest, I'm going to post these till I burn out, people lose interest, or some one else takes over. So far engagement has been low, but I've appreciated every like and comment I've gotten:

Synopsis: With Professor X not only powerless, but initially unconcious, the X-men struggle to maintain normalcy. This includes hiding the professor's injury and unconscious state from Jean's parents who visit to the school. After another failed attempt to locate the X-men, Magneto successfully draws them out by having Toad, in disguise, participate in a track meet that Angel just happens to be watching on tv, drawing the ire of the fans by using his mutant powers to win every event. Although the x-men quickly realize they've been duped, it isn't before Toad successfully lures them toward Magneto and the rest of the brotherhood. Not only do the X-men lose, but angel is taken hostage and brought to Magneto's asteroid hideout in the earth's outer atmosphere where he is tortured in an unsuccessful attempt to get him to reveal Professor X's location. The X-men invade the asteroid and are easily defeated yet again, but are saved by Scarlet Witch when Magneto attempts to murder them all. Thanks to Wanda, the X-men ultimately escape with Angel, and upon returning home learn that Professor X never lost his powers and that the whole thing had been part of an improvised "final exam" for the team, which by surviving with out him helping, they passed, graduating from his school.

Notes:

- For the second straight issue, Scarlet Witch is colored green on the cover. In f act everyone's colors are both off, and off in precisely the same way they were in the last cover EXCEPT toad who was wearing grey and is now wearing yellow and has red hair.

- This also makes it 5 issues to start the series where the X-men lose and have to be saved by some one else (or at least 4 if you consider issue 1 a win or at least a draw since they annoyed Magneto enough that he fled, despite having the upper hand).

- Once again Jean is stuck with wheeling the professor around duties. I believe we've only seen Cyclops do it once, other wise it always falls to Marvel Girl/Jean.

- Cyclops UNLOCKS a door by using his power beam on the key hole. Not busts his way in, unlocks it. I have no idea how that was meant to make sense.

- Beast can apparently stand on ceilings now. Again, I have no idea how this is meant to make sense... or even why he did it in this panel since he could have just look out the window normally and gotten the same angle.

- Apparently it "only takes" a few seconds for Iceman to defrost his body, so I guess he has ice melting powers too?

- This is the first issue we learn that the Beast doesn't like being the Beast. Prior to this, only Scott has expressed unhappiness with their situation, and in his case just that he can't control his powers. Also, one of his word bubbles is yellow. We've seen different colored word bubbles before to help differentiate whose talking, but I can't recall any where both word bubbles were the same person.

- Apparently the professor writes the parents of his students about their "progress" weekly.

- Also, apparently the professor has some one at Washington DC contact the parents to convince them to let their kids join his school. We get no further details on this, so it could be a mental trick, an impersonator, or it could be real. Given we've seen the professor has real connections in the military and pentagon before, I suspect its the latter.

- Although its not visually obvious to us the reader, we get in story confirmation that Scott's casual wear glasses look unusual. Also that Jean's mom is one of "those" types who just touches whatever she pleases with out asking for permission.

- Scott ends up getting trapped in the danger room during the tour Jean is giving her parents and has to endure traps designed for the Beast. He still succeed, mainly by just blowing up anything and everything, but notes that as he uses his beam, it grows increasingly weaker. Since he's not in suit and just removing his glasses, he's presumably using full power at all times, so this is actually a step up for him compared to him just fainting.

- Jean's father notes how odd it is that the school is connected with the government, but still views it just as a positive and not something to be suspicious of as I would be if this was my daughter.

- In searching for the X-men's hideout master mind literally walks right outside their school and we see Jean's parents drive past him, but he doesn't put two and two together. It's not clear how he got so close, or why he just gives up when he is so close. Another case of a mutant having a secondary mutation of good luck, but in his case, not quite good enough?

- Master mind has a watch that can do video conferencing with Magneto. The explanation we're given for how he has this technology in the 60s? It's Magnetic. Yes, that's the explanation for wrist sized portable video phone tech. Magnets.

- Magnets are also the explanation for how Magneto has various space shuttles that his team uses to go to and from his orbiting asteroid base. And just so we're clear, Magneto isn't controlling them with his power, as quicksilver has to fly the shuttle down to pick mastermind up, then fly it back. Magneto is just magnetically charging them with magnet energy. Who knew the true clean energy source we needed was magnets all along.

- Quicksilver tries to convince Magneto to stop being obsessed with trying to find the X-men, as they've put all other plans on hold in this quest, but Magneto remains confident conquering humankind will be trival once the X-men are out of the picture so they need to be priority 1. Worth noting it's established just a few issues later this is the same world that has the fantastic four, among others, but I guess Magneto doesn't fear them.

- Magneto is constantly threatening his brotherhood members for no reason. Even Toad who is consistently obnoxiously devoted to Magneto. He also constantly gets upset, even when they're just asking him what his orders are. This is consistent with a philosphy he'll share in later issues that he doesn't want people to obey him out of devotion, but out of fear... I just don't really understand WHY that's important to him. Especially when the people he's spending so much energy putting the fear of magnets into are mutants who already blindly obey him.

- Cyclops uses his beam to slam a door shut in Bobby's face. Nothing wrong with that per say, I just thought it's funny, especially given how he's so hung up on not being able to control his own powers.

- Hank constantly says or thinks poorly of humans, and at one point laments that Professor X, with out his powers, has also been reduced to a lowly human. We'll see him be depantsed for this attitude by Xavier in later issues, but it was established as far back as issue 4 that he's the member with a bit of a mutant superiority, human inferiority, way of seeing things.

- When Toad uses his mutant abilities to win all the track meet competitions the fans don't get mad at him for being a mutant, but because they assume he must have cheated in some fashion. Beast comments on this saying "They WANT to believe that [he's just cheating], it makes them feel less inferior!"

- Said human fans leave the stands and attempt to rush Toad, some with weapons including what appears to be a tire iron and a plank of wood, actively trying to beat the crap out of him, because they can't believe he won with out cheating.

- Cyclops decides they can't flee in their car because the crowd is pressing from all sides, despite in the piture there being a clear open space behind them to back through. This works out for Magneto as if they could have just driven away, his entire plan would have failed.

- That said... I'm still not entirely clear HOW the plan worked, as Magneto ambushes them at the train station... but they only took the train because Marvel Girl suggested it, not Toad, and they only exited the train at the station they did because they figured out Toad's secret identity. Maybe the real plan was that they would take Toad in disguise back to their secret hideout, and that Magneto was just following them the whole time, but even when they were riding a train? And how was he tracking t hem with out at least Angel noticing, as he was flying up until the train ride.

- Marvel Girl actually captures Master Mind, the first and only one of the 5 to win their battle, butt frees him in order to save Cyclops, which proves pointless as Cyclops rescues himself before she gets to him. That he's able to free himself is a surprise to both the reader and the villians, as for the first time he uses his power beam with out touching his visor (how is never explained but its a plot point that he can) but it shouldn't be a surprise to Jean. The implication was that she overly worries about him due to her crush.

- Magneto abandons Toad because he's captured Angel, and per him, "I'll swap [Angel] for that high jumping fool any day!". No one objects, not even Scarlet Witch or Quicksilver who normally revolt whenever Magneto does something heartless, showing just how despised by everyone the Toad is.

- Magneto also carries Angel over his shoulder despite him being wrapped up in metal, which there's no reason he can't do that, he doesn't have to use his magnetic powers for everything, but I just find it makes for a funny image.

- Mastermind completes their escape by creating an illusion of a rhino that causes all the train goers to freak out and block the x-men. I particularly like this, as up until this moment, MM's powers hadn't been working as they had in the previous issue as the X-men were now wise to his illusions, so he creatively used his powers instead against the near by humans.

- Magneto's torture of Angel involves trapping him in a room with flashing lights and high pitched sirens that never stop going off. I bring this up mainly because I find it funny that it's okay for Magneto in previous issues to be shown shooting off machine guns in crowded spaces, or setting off nuclear bombs to wipe out an entire country, or even kick the x-men out an air lock to suffocate them in deep space, but his methods of torture are limmited to just kind of annoying and sleep depriving Angel. Still valid torture, mind you, but way less extreme then he's previously shown to be.

- The X-men get to Magneto's orbiting asteroid space station via hitching a ride with Toad who acts like he's been mind controlled to return. We're never given an explanation for why Toad does this, but it's specifically confirmed later that he wasn't trying to lure them there. The best explanation I have is Professor X was secretly mind controlling him, but if so, that kind of invalidates his so called test of having them fight completely on their own.

- Instead of using his illusions on the room around the X-men, Master Mind this time uses it on beasts own body and apparently this results in Beast not being able to use the effected body part despite knowing its an issusion.

- At one point Marvel Girl is about to save Cyclops from suffication so Magneto uses his magnetism to put metal head phones on her which are constantly beeping to which Marvel Girl responds "All these things happening... confusing me..." followed by "Can't concentrate! Can't use the power of my brain!" Granted it probably would be hard to concentrate in that situation, but I still find it kind of hilarious that Jean is rendered completely useless by basically setting off a car alarm.

- For the first time, after largely hating him in previous issues, Bobby and Hank seem to be best friends in this one. No real clear explanation of whats changed, but they make a surprisingly effective duo while cyclops continues to try to solo everyone and Marvel Girl obsesses over protecting Cyclops.

- When Scarlet Witch hex's Magnetos controls, preventing him from launching the x-men into space, killing them, Quicksilver dashes inbetween them and it appear the siblings are about to fight Magneto who is enraged by the betrayal. They are interrupted by Cyclops busting into the room, after which Magneto hilariously hides behind Scarlet Witch despite being like twice her size, and begs her to hex cyclops (which she refuses to do). Their betrayal is never brought up again and for some reason Wanda and Pietro stay with Magneto in the end. While its not the first time they've betrayed him, this was the first time they did so openly, so its very strange nothing comes of it.

- Marvel Girl is able to break Angel's prison made of, per Beast, "unbreakable glass", glass that Beast and Iceman could not even so much as crack. Stan Lee makes sure to let us know via dialogue, however, that Beast and Iceman "loosened it" for her, presumably so as not to bruise any male reader egos.

-Near the end of the Battle, after Angel expresses concern about Magneto's intent, Beast quips "The suspicion is beginning to dawn on us that his motive are not the friendliest!" which got a genuine chuckle out of me. Probably my first genuine laugh with the comic, and not at it. Well done Stan.

- Magneto punchs Cyclops from behind while he's wrestling with Quick Silver, and immediately says "Forive me for attacking you from behind, but WE don't fight by any rules!". This also made me laugh, but I don't think it was intended to be funny. Maybe I'm wrong though.

- Iceman saves Cyclops, who Magneto throws into space, by creating an ice tube to and around him, which angel flys through and picks up Cyclops and flys him back... despite the pressumably lack or very limited amount of any air to fly on.

- The X-men escape on one of Magneto's magnet fueld shuttles... but if his power is powering them, couldn't he just turn it off? Did he some how precharge it in advance? Does it not even need his powers and any human could fly to and from space easily with a magnet?

- When they land, and ONLY after they all get out, Magneto takes control of the ship and flys it back to the station to pick them up (as the asteroid itself was falling apart from the battle). This, combined with the fact we don't see any of them steer the ship on the way done, gives the impression Magneto actually landed the X-men himself, even though that would make no sense. We're given no real explanation for this.

Final Thoughts: While the second and third act were once again action packed, I appreciated that there were some quieter moments in this one. We got to see the x-men pretend the school is a normal school while escorted Jean's parents around it, and we got to see them relax for a bit before the second act really got going. This is also the first issue we see the humans really get blood thirsty, straight up trying to murder Toad for using his mutant powers, though the only thing the heroes really take from it is that Professor X was right to have them keep their identities secret.

Overall the story suffers from a lot of contrivances, and Professor X's final exam seemed unnecessarily cruel, especially given, if not for Wanda, they literally would have died. We also are never given clarity on what was happening with Toad, he seemed mind controlled, but it's been a consistent plot point that Professor X needs to be near by, possibly look the target directly in the eyes from point blank range, to mind control people, other wise all he can do is send and read thoughts, so if it was mean to be Professor X's doing, it doesn't work as a twist.

While I didn't mind the repeat villains two issues in a row, especially since they lost last time so this could have been a good opportunity for them to figure their opponents out and bounce back, other then maybe against master mind, I didn't feel like they faired any better in this rematch, and needing one of the two siblings to save them in back to back issues felt like a bit of a retread.

Also, Professor X really hasn't been helping them much in previous issues, at least not when advising remotely, so his absence from the story didn't feel as meaningful as it should.

All that said, it did get a few genuine chuckles out of me. Also, I enjoyed the fan letters at the end (this was the first issue to feature them), so while I can't go above a 6, it's a solid 6 for me. I probably wouldn't read it again, but I didn't mind reading it the one time.

Which Sentry do you prefer?

I just wrapped up reading Paul Jenkins' Sentry runs (Vol 1 & 2) after watching Thunderbolts again and I noticed a large discrepancy between how Bob is portrayed in them

Jenkins' Bob is explicitly schizophrenic and manifests The Void and Sentry as results of it (side tangent, does anyone know why this isn't considered DID like with the Hulk or Moon Knight?). Meanwhile, the MCU version is very much implied to be Bipolar, where both Sentry and the Void are just extensions of his manic and depressive episodes

Personally, I prefer the MCU version purely because I can relate with his episodes, but I also did like his portrayal as a schizophrenic and I wanted to know which one is the more popular one

Symbiotic vampire?

ok, quick question, I know if like Deadpool gets bitten by a zombie (or theoretically a vampire?) his healing factor takes care of it yeah? but what about symbiote hosts like Eddie Brock or patrick mulligan? does it depend on what stage of bonding they’re at? does it matter what condition the symbiote is in? and what if like Eddie separates gets infected with vampirism and then gets rebonded?
