Hello all, this is a random ask if anyone is willing - I've been trying to find any kind of translation for a song by Malouma called Rafi and can't find any resources that have the lyrics written down or that can translate the Hassaniya Arabic. Would anyone be willing or able to help? I've been able to find this distinct phrase and some of it's meaning "Subḥân əl-kân wə-l-bâqi ḥayy" and would love to know what the rest of this piece means.

A Mauritanian woman who is dear to my heart (in her late 20s) hasn’t found her husband yet. She has been engaged multiple times but ended them for various legit reasons. She is genuinely beautiful (for real I am not just saying that, textbook beautiful: skinny not fat), religious, smart, funny, caring you name it, she got it . I spent a morning at the camel market on the edge of Nouakchott and honestly it's one of those places that's hard to describe until you're standing in it — hundreds of camels, dust everywhere, and a level of hospitality I wasn't expecting as a random foreigner showing up with a camera.

A few practical things I wish I'd known beforehand, in case it's useful for anyone planning a visit:

Getting there
I took a taxi from central Nouakchott. There's no fixed fare, so agree on the price before you get in — I didn't the first time and paid way more than I should have. Shared taxis exist too if you want the cheaper route and don't mind waiting for the car to fill up.

Best time to go
Early morning, right around sunrise. The market is already busy by then, the light is incredible for photos, and it's not brutally hot yet.

What to expect
It's a working market, not a tourist attraction — people are there to buy and sell camels, not to pose for photos. That said, everyone I met was warm and curious rather than annoyed by a foreigner wandering around. I ended up sitting with a group of herders who barely spoke English, got pulled into a full tea ceremony (three rounds is the custom — once you accept the first cup, you're basically expected to drink all three), and watched a camel get loaded onto the back of a pickup truck, which is not something you see every day.

A small cultural note
If you're Muslim, or just mention you're Turkish, don't be surprised if it changes how people treat you. I noticed people vouching for me to others ("he's Turkish, he's Muslim, no problem") in a way that clearly smoothed things over — especially later when I needed help finding a taxi back.

Money-wise
Bring cash, small bills if possible. Nouakchott has the last reliable ATMs before you're really out in more remote areas, so stock up there.

If anyone wants more specific details (exact location, rough taxi prices, etc.) happy to answer in the comments — I know how hard it is to find practical info about Mauritania online before going.

I’m a British man who is interested in travelling to Mauritania in order to ride the Iron Ore train to get the full Saharan experience. I’ve done lots of research on the matter and I understand that local authorities are cracking down harder on people doing this in order to try and prevent. However, the people of Mauritania say that as a child this train was a lot of the time their main way of travel across the country, or even to school, etc. I just want to know is this is benefitting the country and tourism growth is any way and I want to get the local peoples honest opinion on the matter.

I’ve recently posted about how depressing nktt is, and just wondering how do u keep ur sanity here, and i’ve never thought it would be controversial to say that ppl deserve more than eating drinking and having a shelter, but apparently some of u genuinely think that’s it, yes i’m grateful for the bare minimum of human rights, i’m greatful i’m not starving -even tho many mauritanians are-, i’m greatful i’m not homeless, or living thru a war, but that doesn’t make a life that’s survival
Wanting more than that like just a pleasent environment, walkable streets or any kind of freedom, shouldn’t be viewed as a luxury, those are the basics, nktt doesn’t have any green spaces, and hardly any public spaces where u can just exist freely, and if there is any kind of places that u might enjoy it won’t be free.. and getting there would be obviously a struggle if u don’t have a car, even if u are financially stable -not rich enough to go out of this hell just financially stable- what are u even supposed to do? U can spend sometime with ur family or friends -if u do have any, which is not the case for everyone ofc- but beyond that there is remarkably little to do !!
And that what made me wonder what do we see a good life? Is having a shelter, something to eat and a company whatever kind of is enough to say that u live a decent life?

Genuinely i find it so suffocating to live in here, i do have my family, my friends -somehow- but it’s so depressing, how can u deal with the daily life without panicking twice or more per day at the minimum? and i’m not talking about what we do deal with this period with the electricity matter or anything, fuck it, it was depressing way before it, like u feel like everything is ugly, the roads are ugly, the architecture is ridiculosly ugly, let alone the constant social pressure..u You’ll never really live the way you want, i mean if you ever get the chance to do more than just survive.. and literally everything else

Planing to experience the iron ore train end of October this year. As I will not have heaps of time (around 7 days) I want to plan it quite tightly. But I am unsure based on online information on transport options from Nouadhibou --> Terjit --> Chinguetti --> Choum. Is this something where public transport is reliable? Or is a tour/driver needed? And what is the cost for public transport / private driver respectively?

My general plan for the 7 days is:

- Fly into Dakhla

- Take bus to Nouadhibou

- From there go to Terjit + Chinguetti

- --> Choum & Iron Ore Train to Nouadhibou

- --> bus back to Dakhla and fly out (to Morocco)
