Why should we blame it on Temu?? This has no foundation.. it is the Mauritian system that is overly backwards and did not adapt to new global commerce, especially from China (factory of the world). We all need something to enhance our lives and so many products are available from china.. years back, we had to rely on businessmen who would go to China (Guangzhou etc) to buy those products in bulk and sell them.. now many things can be ordered individually, online by any ordinary person.. If it were up to me, the Diwali sweets are what's best on Diwali day, especially Gato Patate or Idli or Barfi. So if you can find/or prepare Diwali Sweets, he might appreciate it. Ofc he does not expect you to know how to make them because they are quite tedious to make for a complete beginner. You could try order some.

I'm already out, been out since 1987. Been back quite a few times, nice to visit but wouldn't live there. Cost of living far outweighs salaries there. Yes I know its relative but my current salary allows me to own a 4 bed semi-detached house with driveway, two relatively modern EVs etc

You should carry out a proper tender process, based on coordinated drawings, specifications, project timeline, a clear scope of works and a detailed breakdown of what is included and excluded with 3 or more contractors.

A few pages of quotation or simply a price per square foot / square metre cannot realistically define everything required to construct a building properly.

The contractor’s offer should be checked against the actual project documentation, exclusions identified clearly & competing tenders compared on the same scope.

Otherwise, this is where you later hear: “Mo ti croire sa ti inclus… Ah, sa pena ladan?”

During construction, I would also strongly advise to have an independent consultant checking the contractor’s claims against the actual progress of the works before payments are certified. Ideally, the same consultant follows the project throughout; otherwise a registered architect or engineer should at least verify that the works are being carried out in accordance with the drawings, specifications and proper construction practice.

You should also understand your contractual rights before signing: what warranties apply, what defects are covered, whether there is a biennial warranty, what is a decennial warranty, what retention applies, what happens during the defects-liability period, and whether the contractor is required to provide a performance/security bond or other financial guarantee.

These points should not be discovered only when something goes wrong.

Construction documentation is also far more extensive than the few drawings used for permit approval or an initial pricing exercise.

Proper construction information includes architectural details, sections, waterproofing interfaces, drainage, structural coordination, openings, finishes, services coordination and many other items that must be resolved before they become problems on site.

You do not want to finish the house and then discover water infiltration or staining through a wall because drainage, flashing, waterproofing or another interface was never properly considered. Or adding WC pipes, rainwater pipes, AC pipes,… on your facades.

I’m saying this because we see too many cases where clients only come to architects or engineers afterwards for mitigation, remedial works or conflict resolution, when the damage has already been done.

Proper documentation, tendering, contractual protection and professional supervision may look like additional cost at the beginning, but they can prevent much larger costs and disputes later.

A proper tender, proper contract, clear documentation and indépendent professional supervision will not eliminate every possible problem, but they greatly reduce the room for misunderstanding, unreliable contractors and ensure that both client and contractor remain protected at every stage of the project.

In construction, the contract is not just the signed written agreement. The contract is made up of the complete set of documents that define what is to be built, how it is to be built, how it is to be measured and paid for & what each party is responsible for.

This typically includes the contract agreement, drawings, specifications, Bill of Quantities, general conditions, particular/specific conditions, schedules, addenda, agreed tender clarifications and other referenced documents.

The applicable warranties, defects-liability obligations, retention provisions, performance/security bonds, insurance requirements, payment terms, variation procedures and other contractual protections also form part of that contractual framework.

So when there is a disagreement, you do not look only at one quotation or one signed page. You look at the contract documents as a whole, because they collectively establish the contractor’s obligations and the client’s rights.

And if you think consultants are expensive, I mean real professionals, compétent, experienced, and who have proven themselves; not necessarily the biggest firms; détrompe-toi.

You are spending millions on a building. Trying to save on the people whose job is to design properly, coordinate, check, certify and protect that investment can easily cost you far more later.

One bad waterproofing detail, swapping steel diameter in columns / beams, or another one structural mistake, one uncontrolled variation, one overpayment or one major omission can wipe out whatever you thought you had saved.

Saving on professional fees is not always saving money. Sometimes it is simply buying more risk.

And frankly, it is regrettable that the Construction Industry Authority, formerly the CIDB, is of so little practical help when it comes to advising and protecting the public on these issues.
But there we are: you only have to look around to see how many buildings suffer from poor detailing, poor execution, water ingress, premature deterioration and unresolved defects.

Most importantly: don’t try to force as many square metres as possible into your budget.
If your budget is limited, build smaller but build properly. Good structure, proper waterproofing, drainage, detailing, services and finishes matter far more than having an extra 30 or 40 m² that you could not afford to execute correctly.

A smaller, well-designed and well-built house will always be a better investment than a bigger house full of compromises, defects and future repair bills.

Strange. I thought mauritius was developing faster than the uk. I remember 10 years ago I felt like a millionaire now I go there and feel poor and everyone else lives luxury!!

I'm not Mauritian, I went there for a holiday recently, and this is surpring to be honest like from what I've seen the people were fairly proud of their country and heritage and standards of living were pretty normal, could anyone from the island explain?

If you have a house of your own, do light some candles and some diyas (clay lamps) on your balcony or just in some safe place of your house, without your fire alarm going off. Maybe also try rangoli or fairy lights around your house. LED (rainbow or changing ones) would do too. And with some traditional wear and some sweets you can buy or make together at home. That would be fun.

And try to Google the nearest temples in the region where you live, hopefully you'll end up finding some. If not, the Gurudwara too is a good place to celebrate Divali.

As a Hindu Mauritian myself, I think the fact that you want to make this special for him is already really sweet. ❤️ And don't stress about getting everything “right” Hindu traditions vary a lot between families, especially in Mauritius.

For Navratri, you could take him to a Garba/Dandiya night, cook/order some vegetarian food together, dress up and maybe visit a temple if he’d like the spiritual side of it.

For Diwali, get some diyas, make a rangoli, decorate together, have some good food and sweets, and light the diyas together. 🪔 you can check some Mauritian sweets like Gato Patate or Ladoo

Since you're both in London, there are usually plenty of Navratri and Diwali events around the city too. Check some group on Insta or Tiktok.

But honestly, ask him what he remembers or what he wishes he'd experienced growing up. You don't have to recreate a childhood he didn't have, you can create your own little traditions together. ❤️ I love this one most 🤗

And as a fellow Mauritian, I'd definitely ask him about the Mauritian side of his traditions too. We have our own little twists! 🇲🇺🪔
