We are the Maono product development team. Ask us anything about microphones, DSP, recording workflows, and PD500W.

Hello r/microphone. We appreciate the chance to do an AMA here.

We are members of Maono's product development, acoustic engineering, and audio teams.

Some of you may know us from PD200W, DM40, PD500W or P1. Maono is still a young audio brand, and we are grateful to everyone who has chosen one of our mics. We know trust takes time, and this AMA is one way for us to show up and have a direct conversation.

We are here to listen, take criticism, and answer clearly. Your voice matters, so ask us about anything that affects how a mic sounds or works in a real setup.

For transparency, PD500W is currently on Kickstarter. It is a hybrid wired/wireless microphone with internal recording and 32-bit float for safer recording and more room in post. Questions, criticism, and design challenges are all welcome.

A genuine thank you to the r/microphone mods for inviting us into the community and making this AMA possible.

We are posting early for different time zones, and we will start answering at AUG 28 12:00 PM EST and will stay for about one hour. If we miss anything, we will continue answering over the next 24 hours.

Thank you for joining us. Feel free to ask us anything.

Studio Mics Mic Shootout for Male Tenor Vocals w/ Cover (TLM107 vs TLM103)

Nothing scientific but I've recorded a cover of "Pillowtalk" by Zayn with these two mics, hoping to find the right microphone for me as a Male vocalist up in the tenor range and seeing which mic I should keep/sell.

All recordings were made in an untreated room, about 4 inches away, and the vocal chain is basically straight from my MOTU M4 to FL Studio running a compressor and stock reverb. The only EQ I have is for a high pass filter on 40Hz. I've tried to gain match them as best I can. Any feedback is appreciate!

Gaming / Streaming Mics Mic too quiet in calls

Whenever I talk with friends, they have my volume up to 200% and even then my mic is real quiet to them. I have all volumes on max that I could find and change for the microphone and nothing seems to work without making the mic sound ugly. My headset is Steelseries Arctis Prime if that changes anything. Please if anyone has a solution, mention it in the comments

Anyone using a BOYA mini 2?

I’m looking for a small mic for some short videos and don’t really want to deal with a full setup. Saw the BOYA mini 2 mentioned a few times and it looks pretty compact, but I’m not sure how good it actually is with background noise. If anyone has used it, would love to hear your experience.

I was thinking that I could use a microphone used to detect bird sounds to detect jets that fly by before they could be seen but I know nothing about microphones.

Strange xlr size, vintage mic

Hello, just received as a gift a k3n sennheiser, it came with a 3-pin “Klein-Tuchel” / DIN 41524 connector that goes to mono 6.5mm jack. This xlr is smaler than a normal xlr, but bigger than a ta3 connector. I don't think i can send phantom power to the jack, any chance to find a solution to make it work without investing in some custom vintage cable?

Is it a genuine one ?

Hi !

I ordered a Shure mic on Amazon because I needed it very quickly and it was the only seller option for a same day delivery.

I choose an SM58SE which was linked to the official Shure Amazon Storefront ... and received a Beta 58A instead.

Looks like there was an error with the Amazon internal inventory sticker because it says SM58SE on it but was put on a Beta 58A box.

Then I learned these models are very popular and a lot of fake ones are being made and sold unfortunalty.

The packaging looks legit and contains every expected accessories comparing to various photos and unboxing videos I saw.

The mic itself seems very well made and sounded full/crisp to me when I used it for live speech with no larsen whatsoever despite being close to the speakers.

It doesn't have a "cheap smell" (if that makes any sense) and weighs 274g on my kitchen scale which is close to the 278g officially advertised by Shure.

A detail, it has a very small QR code in the inner side of the XLR socket, not sure if it's a decal or laser engraved.

So I'm wondering what I should do with it !

If it's genuine (which I suppose it is) then I got a free unexpected upgrade and will definitly keep it, otherwise I will send it back and re-order one trough a trusted specialized retailer.

What do you think ?

Gaming / Streaming Mics Best budget mic for voice calls/gaming?

I was gonna go with the COMPANY THAT SHALL NOT BE NAMED brand, then looked over and saw a specific rule here in place due to how badly they seem to be made. I bought the Stealth 700 (Gen 3) Turtle Beach headset in July and it is genuinely awful. Not only is it incredibly buggy in ways I've never seen in any headset, but the mic is HORRIBLE quality for some reason no matter what I do and it randomly decided to just stop. I mean full stop. Turned it on the other week and it literally just isn't recognized by the my computer at all, doesn't show up anywhere. I've been forced to use an actual face cam mic the last two weeks and you can imagine how thats been going.

Due to how much I already dropped on this headset (not refundable) I really dont have a ton extra to throw around right now, but really need the best I can afford. Preferably something not too expensive that can pick up my voice at best quality. I mostly talk to friends and run DnD games over discord, so any suggestions in that wheel house would be so helpful.

Electro voice re20 problem

I just bought a new electro voice re20 from sweetwater with a cloud lifter and I noticed that the audio is always slightly distorted, when the gain is just right for my speaking voice the mic gets a little distorted, and when you turn the volume on max when listening back you can really hear the distortion, I compared to other people who use the electro voice re20 and there’s a difference so I know I’m not crazy, but it always sounds a little muffled and it yeah it sounds a little distorted I just wanna know how to fix this :( it’s really frustrating (I don’t sing btw I only do voiceovers)

Other The Shure/Gator Broadcast 1 boom arm sucks

Do not buy. Learn from me.

I think it was what they had at the guitar center when i bought my mic. I didnt' know any better and was like - "oh right I need one of those too!"

After a year or so of using it, I dont even know why its allowed to be a thing, let alone a thing that costs more than others. It's just - very bad. Specifics:

1) There are three turn-y wheel-y things at the elbows that you intuitively think are for tightening/loosening the arm. they dont do much. turn one way, turn the other way, turn a lot, turn a little... and nothing much changes. the thing just doesnt want to bend at all at any of them. so if you want to ever move while using, shift it to a different position, youre gonna be sad because its clunka-chunka-squeeka then cursing out loud while youre on air.

2) the main pivot at the base does not go past vertical at all. so you can bend it toward you, but if you want that certain position where its kind of at the ready by being pushed back on its haunches a bit... doesnt exist.

3) the other two elbows dont fold flat against themselves. the minimum angle is like 15 or 20 degrees.

So yeah, the whole thing is just a creaky unwinnable fight. Beware!

Overheat buzz on a rode nt1, is it fixable?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I currently record voice over scripts with a rode nt-1 plugged on a motu m2. I currently record under a blanket tent because this is the only way I have to have a decent sound, but it gets way too warm very quickly in that tent. After at best 10 minutes under that tent, the microphone stops picking up my voice and turns to a consistant buzzing noise.

After some trouble shooting, I'm 95% sure the mic overheats and that's the cause of the issue. It doesn't happen at all if my microphone stays in the open on my desk, it dissappear in at most two minutes after I leave the tent fully open, and it (used to) comes faster if the day is warmer.

I got into the habit of cooling the room I'm in as much as possible, opening the tent more often, taking longer breaks, to try and avoid it. It was fine for sometime, but the buzz seems to come more frequently and faster each time I record, the past week, even with the temperature kept as low as I can manage.

Is it fixable or do I need a new microphone? I am saving to make a proper booth and spending 100$ on a new microphone would heavily hinder my savings... And If I need to get a new microphone, how do I prevent this issue from happening again?

What should i upgrade??

Well my current setup is that i have a behringer c1 mice and a behringer umc22 interface. My budget is 200$. What should i upgrade?? Should i just buy a shure sm58 or some other kind of condenser mic. Ive noticed one thing that it is very easy for me to record my vocals on a handheld microphone because i can maintain the overall vibe of the song. I just cannot stand at one place and record my vocals. Orrr should i upgrade my interface??

Game room mic help

I have a home theatre building and it doubles as a game night room. 1-4 people local playing online with one mic. What is a suitable option for this. I was using my logitech headset mic in the middle of the room and it worked pretty well actually, it filtered the game and discord audio so others only heard our voices. Got a stand alone mic and it picked up everything except our voice.

Wireless Mic mini 2 is clipping

Hey, guys!

Some months ago I bought myself a Mic Mini 2 that I was supposed to use for my motovlogs, recording the exhaust note. I am pairing it with the DJI ACTION OSMO 6.

I can’t seem to figure out why the mic is clipping all the time. I’ve adjusted the db to -12 in the settings of the OSMO, tried various microphone placements, settings and even went as far as putting a small piece of wrapping package in between the microphone and the deadcat to help with dampening the sound.

I can’t seem to understand at all. I thought that the microphone was clipping just when I was in high revs, but it also seems to be clipping in cruising speeds too, just randomly. It’s literally less clipping by using the microphone on the OSMO 6. Have I just wasted my money on this? Any tips to solve this?

Worth Repairing?

Post image
5 Upvotes

my uncle handed me this broken 70s shure “Unisphere A Model 585SA” microphone that my grandpa used to gig with. I’m not too familiar with this microphone and can’t find too much information on it, so I have no idea how it sounds fully functioning.

Would it be worth it to get this microphone repaired? Or should this just be kept as a keepsake. Thanks!
