This definitely sucks, but did that cheese not come in a clear bag and do you not even glance in there before you grab some?

I always flatten the bag before I seal it. If I ever pull cheese out of the fridge and it's inflated it goes straight into the trash. No visual check needed.

How interesting and smart.

I guess Im flattening my cheese bags from now on

u/MoonPieKitty 1d ago

Everyone doesn't do this? Interesting

u/James_Slayer 1d ago

I do the same thing, though i only do it to get as much air out as possible. I dont know if it actually does anything to keep it fresh but it certainly seems to keep longer than cheese did before i started doing it. Good call on the inflating though, never thought about that.

I do that also but find that the cheese clumps together easily. One thing I’ve found that seems to help prevent this is to close the bag while filled with air and shake up the contents well before letting the air out.

And don't touch the cheese with bare hands or dirty utensils.

Contamination from hands and dirty utensils sets the cheese off faster.

Does it look as though they peered through the bag before grabbing (sprinkling from said bag is more likely) some?

7

u/James_Slayer 1d ago

I agree on straight out of the bag, i learned pretty quick always taste a pinch of cheese (after it passes the smell test) before adding to anything

4

u/ogfria 1d ago

Yessssss, always lead with the smell taste. Ain’t no way this woulda passed.

I've had mold duck behind the labelling and what not and pulled it before.. BUT examined it before it made it to my food.

When you see the mold.

u/FireFairy323 1d ago

Oh man at first I thought the green was just seasoning.

15

u/slowerlearner1212 1d ago

Just a little rosemary

Pre-shredded Pepper Jack cheese is notorious for this. If the package is just past the expiration or had been exposed to any significant air or warm temps it seems like every piece of green jalapeño COULD BE MOLD.

It’s so maddening that I now only shred my own from a full block 🧀

And the pasta is getting cold, that's amore!

u/mostly_lurking1040 1d ago

FWIW, I keep shredded cheese in the freezer.

9

u/TurtleSandwich0 1d ago

Frozen cheese never molds.

5

u/GranJan2 1d ago

That is a good idea.

5

u/macarenamobster 1d ago

Why has this never occurred to me

3

u/mostly_lurking1040 1d ago edited 1d ago

I've done it for a good long time. It may have started because my grocery stores annoyingly will put shredded cheese on sale by 2 get 2 or buy 2 get 3. And you can just take out some and leave the pack in there.

Update: AND This means I can always make nachos when I realize I have chips, mini pizzas, or grilled cheeses. You're welcome! 🤣

Any cheese, for that matter.
Dairy in general, come to think of it.

Look before you Shake. Always.

13

u/DrasticOne333 1d ago

Meh, just pick it out.

4

u/Moveyourbloominass 1d ago

Right, it hasnt melted yet. No need to waste the food.

5

u/Smallville_Kansas 1d ago

Spin it as aged cheese

5

u/BigBeeOhBee 1d ago

You forgot to say "BAM!" enthusiastically I bet. That's why it's green.

This is a good opportunity to stop adding ingredients directly from their container to the pot/pan.

Going through a separate container first helps to both control quantity and quality of what is added. It's also done wonders for my spices, their containers are no longer suffering from steam gunking them up.

Yum looks good

u/gravvveler 1d ago

Amatriciana?

3

u/Mindless_Whereas_280 1d ago

At least it was green mold and not white.

3

u/I_am_just_here11 1d ago

Yummy blue cheese

2

u/Several-Spirit-8452 1d ago

Eat it. Thats a good trip.

2

u/bicep123 1d ago

I've done this.

The good thing is, you never do it again (cheese in the freezer, always check for mold before sprinkling on food).

2

u/steal-yur-face 1d ago

That cheese looks like the kind that comes in the little bags included with bagged Caesar’s salads. We had a couple go green on us too.

Fortunately we say before using.

2

u/Shenanigans99 1d ago

Oh no, I've had this happen before too. It was a clear bag of shredded cheese, I examined the cheese with the bag closed, didn't see any mold so I figured it was good to go, opened the bag...and the mold had grown in the center of the cheese, not the outside visible parts, so you'd have no way of seeing it from the outside of the bag. So insidious!

u/alecesne 1d ago

Parsley, sage, rosemary, and mold.

2

u/jspivak 1d ago

Aside from it tasting better, this is another reason to shred your own parm

2

u/Jagrmeister_68 1d ago

Oh damn I thought that was rosemary .....

NOPE!

They dident blame it on anyone else? Still mildly infuriating either way.

1

u/AdamantlyAtomic 1d ago

How did that make it in there?? 🤦🏻‍♂️ like seriously.. WTF??

1

u/addicted_zucchini 1d ago

Dont they like mold cheese

1

u/curvyfeminist1 1d ago

I would definitely try to scoop it all out

1

u/Massive_Mongoose3481 1d ago

That won't happen again. I stocked cheese in stores a long time ago, occasionally you get a green bag out of the box. Since then I always dump it on a plate and check it out, smell, taste and visual before I use it

u/The_Gumbo 1d ago

"It's just pesto"

It tastes... rotten?

"Fancy Artisanal Blue-Cheese Pesto"

Oh, it's now delicious.

1

u/merposaur 1d ago

Moldly infuriating

1

u/nibbed2 1d ago

oh no

1

u/HistoricalRoad1755 1d ago

This is on you. Always check ingredients before adding them to a dish - just a quick glance inside of the bag and this should have been obvious.

1

u/bloodyspork 1d ago

How didnt you notice?!

1

u/Brief_Manner_694 1d ago

You always check it first. Start scooping the top layer off.

1

u/HamFiretruck 1d ago

It's just extra mature cheese, no problem here

1

u/ShoWel-Real 1d ago

Had a similar problem this morning. Wanted to have some eggs - the last one I cracked was rotten

1

u/iwalktowork 1d ago

Happened to male last night as well.  I've gotta start storing my cheese better.

1

u/YeshuasBananaHammock 1d ago

Well, sheeeit

1

u/Guernzee 1d ago

I don't find grated cheese all that great tbh, dry from the get go. I'd still probably eat that though, looks ok to me 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

1

u/quiplaam 1d ago

Just pretend its blue cheeese

1

u/JoLudvS 1d ago

I mean... this happening at home and in the own kitchen might be both unwanted and sad, but what really maddens me is, that I expect that certain family members would mix that under to serve it to You (not themselves), still.

1

u/_CornTBE_ 1d ago

EAT YO GREENS THEIR GOOD FOR YOU!

1

u/Dismal_Rectangle 19h ago

Some frenchman would eat this and think he discovered a whole new flavor

0

u/MammothMolasses2285 1d ago

Just scrape it off.

2

u/Many-Hour8219 1d ago

Scrape off shredded cheese?

0

u/Artisttype1984 1d ago

No way I'd let that ruin that great looking pasta

Pick it out and dinnertime IMO
