My grandmother made homemade cough syrup by mixing 1/3 lemon juice, 1/3 honey, and 1/3 whisky. My mother told me that it worked well! A sleep aid for the kids too! This was around 1930, I suppose they were lucky they weren't given over-the-counter opioids.

Yeah, my grandma and her teetotaler bestie both kept whiskey on hand for hot toddies. Straight up lemon when your throat is already sore just sounds like torture.
