[Announcement] New Rule Against AI, other Rule Changes and Clarifications

Hey folks!

For a while now, the mod team has been discussing a number of changes to the subreddit's rules, and it's time to let you know what's up. I'll give you the short version first:

  1. We have a new rule against AI.
  2. The rule for for formatting and vagueness has been split in two.
  3. The rule against unrealistic ideas has been reworked.
  4. To better accommodate these new and changed rules, we've re-ordered the rules.
  5. Clarification on how the "Community Question" flair is supposed to be used.

And now for the details!

Ban Against AI Generated Content

We not so recently polled the community on your feeling on AI generated content, and the overwhelming majority of you voted in favour of a complete ban against AI. While this was pretty much the outcome we expected, it's still really nice to see we're all on the same page.

Moving forwards the mods will be removing all posts suspected of using generative AI. To that end, here's the new rule:

Don't use AI.

  • Do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to write your post for you. We want to see your ideas.
  • Don't include AI generated images or other AI content to supplement your post. We encourage human art, and we'd much rather see photos of pen-and-paper drawings, or quick mockups in MS paint than AI "art".
  • This includes using generative AI to polish your idea, such as reformatting your content.

Posts suspected of using generative AI are at risk of removal.

If your post is incorrectly removed for containing AI, please let the mods know via modmail and we'll sort it out.

Formatting and Image Posts

We've noticed some confusion on where and how we allow images in posts, with too many users relying on images alone to communicate their idea. This was previously just a bullet point under the vagueness rule, but in the interest of clarity we've split it off into its own rule. There's nothing actually new here - everything works the same as before - but hopefully this should make it clearer for everyone.

The vagueness rule looks like this now:

Don't be overly vague, and be readable.

  • Make sure your idea is in the description, not just the title.
  • Titles should be descriptive of the idea.
  • Format your posts well; don't post walls of text. Use line breaks, etc.
  • Don't be vague; suggest a specific improvement or feature.
  • Be concise/don't waffle on too much.

Vague or unformatted posts are at risk of removal.

And here's the images rule:

Don't make image-only posts.

Including reference images is encouraged, but: * Images must be embedded or linked within a text post. * The idea should be fully explained in the text, with all key points understandable without looking at any images. * Images should make up a relatively small portion of the content. * Images must not be AI generated. (See rule 4.)

Image only posts will be automatically removed.

Unrealistic and Off-Theme Content

There's been some disagreement in the community and among the mod team about what is and isn't a "realistic" suggestion for Minecraft, especially as the game has grown it's become an increasingly difficult call to make. Furthermore, many ideas that are off-theme at first glance can be reskinned to something more reasonable, and we don't want to stifle that discussion. (E.g., Blimps and firearms may be too futuristic but happy ghasts and firework crossbows are not, yet serve similar roles.)

You deserve to have clear guidelines for which posts are or aren't allowed and, ultimately, we don't want to shut down discussion, so we've decided to soften this rule dramatically. Moving forwards, we'll only be taking down suggestions involving mature or explicit themes (stuff that might change the age-rating), as well as anything relating to real-world religions or politics. All that said, here's the rule:

Don't suggest mature topics.

  • Don't suggest ideas containing sex, drugs, gore, real-life religions or politics, etc.

Suggestions involving mature, explicit, or overly divisive themes will be removed.

This is one we'll be keeping an eye on, and we'd appreciate any feedback you have on it.

N.B. The portion of the old rule about easter-eggs and jokes still applies, but has been merged into the rule about unproductive ideas.

Reordering

As we're adding new rules and splitting old ones in twain, there's no better time to also rearrange the rules. We've brought some more important/frequently used rules closer to the top, and tried to keep related rules close to each other. We've also changed a few of the titles for clarity.

  1. Be nice and constructive.
  2. Only post ideas for Minecraft.
  3. Be original and consult the FPS list.
  4. Don't use AI.
  5. Include only one suggestion per post.
  6. Don't be overly vague, and be readable.
  7. Don't make image-only posts.
  8. Don't suggest mature topics.
  9. Don't suggest planned or existing features.
  10. Don't suggest scrapped or unused features.
  11. Don't suggest low-priority or unproductive ideas.
  12. Speak English.
  13. Have 10 comment karma before posting.

Discussion/Community Question Posts

We've seen some confusion surrounding these posts, and while nothing is changing, we wanted to use this opportunity to clarify. Posts meant to start broad discussions on a topic, such as "What would you add in XYZ update?" or "What do you think needs updated in XYZ area of the game?" are allowed, so long as the OP contributes to the discussion they want to start. We find these posts regularly generate interesting discussion, and so long as they use the correct flair, they're easy enough to ignore if they're not your cup of tea.

I encourage everyone to take a quick read through the rules to make sure we're all on the same page.

Thanks for reading!

[AI Behavior] Clerics should plant netherwart

Farmer villagers have the ability to automatically break and replant crops, so I think it would be lovely if the clerics could do the same with netherwart on soulsand.

  1. Just makes sense and is essentially just a parody of an already existing mechanic.

  2. We would be able to make actually good netherwart farms

    1. This makes building with red nether bricks much more motivating

___

Not a big idea just one that comes to mind everytime I need lots of netherwart...

[Blocks & Items] Glass shard

Glass shards could be produced by melting a pane or bottle in a furnace (yielding 2) and could drop when breaking glass with a pickaxe (1-2) or throwing a splash potion (0-1). 9 shards could be crafted into a glass block. That would let us recycle some of the glass back into blocks. They could also be included in chest loot in damaged structures and abandoned camps. Maybe some tiny stained-glass art could be produced by crafting together shards of different colors.

[General] Soul Sand and Magma Blocks’ bubble columns should be switched

It never made sense that the hot block creates bubbles that pull downwards. Everyone knows heat rises, so naturally they should push upwards

Magma blocks are also annoying in bubble column elevators because unless you go out of your way to shift you take damage on them. Not that big of a deal, but always a minor annoyance since that wouldn’t be an issue if they followed physics and pushed you upwards instead

It would be annoying to not be able to sit at the bottom of magma block bubble columns and refill breath in ocean ravines, i imagine that would especially suck in bedrock edition. A change like this would screw over lots of existing farms and sorting systems in worlds that upgrade, so i imagine it won’t happen now, but they really should have had the opposite effect from the beginning

[Redstone] Dispenser Renaming

Dispensers should be able to use name tags to rename mobs. It could be useful for transporting mobs from a mob farm. Dispensers can equip armor and saddle, use flint and steel, bottles and shears, fire arrows, projectiles and potions. Why not add naming mobs?

[Terrain] Whilpools!

My idea would be if you have a decent sized body of water and there is a soul sand and magma block within a close proximity to each other on the bottom it would create a whirlpool that will suck down players boats items and mobs.

Edit: Changed soul soil to soul sand as I ment to originally. I know in nature rising warm air + falling cold air + a sideways breeze can cause tornados so that's what makes me think this could make sense in a minecraft world and it would look awesome! As for why? Mainly for aesthetics, maybe some other interactions could be done with it like mobs farms or bring items down to chests I don't know it just an idea that crossed my mind. Feel free to make additional recommendations this could apply to!

[Gameplay] Subnautica style Keep inventory.

I think the game without keep inventory is hard, sure if you want a challenge go for it, i personally hate when i lose everything when i die in lava or in the void, and keep inventory just feels too easy. so i have an idea, A subnautica style keep inventory. If you dont know, or have played the game and are confused, (its probably in other games but so far subnautica is the only game ive played that does this, sorry if you know another game like this inventory)

In subnautica, your inventory gets “saved” when you go in your base, and when you die, you respawn in your base with all the items you had when you were last there, and 1 random item you got on your expedition.

while minecraft has no way of knowing how large your base is, there could be a 30 block radius in each direction around your bed(straw beds dont count) that counts as your ”base” and the game checks for your bed‘s location,
for example if theres a wall (3 blocks stacked on top) on the left of your bed, the game actually makes it 60 block radius(not down nor up) instead so those parts arent gone to waste if your bed is next to a wall. i think it could be a sweet spot and doesnt count as a cheat.

What are your opinions on it?

[Mobs] Shrieker mob that triggers sculk sensors at long range

It would be handy to have a way to detect the deep dark at a distance before mining into it. Why not add a breedable "shrieker" mob that spawns on the surface and, when hurt, emits a scream so loud and so long that it's audible from at least 128 blocks and triggers sculk sensors within that radius several times? Then when this happened near sea level, you'd know you were above the deep dark from the heartbeat and Darkness effect when a warden spawned. Resourceful players might also use them to detect when mobs in general were being hurt in an area, so they'd know where to look or send allays for dropped items.

[Structures] Make ALL VILLAGE WORK HOUSES have CHESTS

Post image
13 Upvotes

I just scoured through the wiki to check up on my favorite thing : consistencyyy, and lo and behold ! VILLAGE WORK HOUSES ARE COMPLETELY INCONSISTENT !!!

And I'm not talking about design ! No, I already spent multiple hours earlier today modding my own fix ! No, I am talking about the fact 64% (almost TWO THIRDS) OF ALL WORK HOUSES DO NOT HAVE A CHEST despite having a LOOT TABLE ASSIGNED TO THEM.

What are we doing, here ?? Is it because of "balancing", that only ONE out of TWO butcher shop variants in only ONE out of FIVE village types has a chest ? My, my, I forgot how gamebreaking looting RAW MEAT was.\ Not to mention the fact that the ONLY shepherd's house containing a chest CAN'T EVEN GENERATE due to a TYPO in its jigsaw block !! Effectively making the ENTIRE shepherd house loot table INACCESSIBLE for the ENTIRE game !

I'm honestly baffled. This has been in the game for over 7 years and this enormous oversight has never been resolved.

Guess I'll have to fix THAT with a mod, too, seing how this has been handled for, again, the past seven years.

[Blocks & Items] Armadillo Plating (An update for Wolf Armor)

The idea is to rename "Wolf Armor" into "Armadillo Plating" and allow it to be used on most peaceful/Neutral Mobs. Then the Tooltip for the item would clarify its use as armor for animals. (bedrock has been updating tooltips a lot lately to explain items better if you don't know what they do).

I know this change isn't very feasible to come to Vanilla in a single drop due to how many custom armor sprites you need for most mobs in the game, but I figured I'd suggest it to see other people's opinion on it.

The reason I think this change would be nice is because it would allow players to personalize the stranger mobs they see as pets and provide extra defense to them. (Such as Pigs, Chickens, Cows, Bees, Etc. which are seen as livestock mobs to most but to some players are considered pets)

The defense side of things will help you protect your pets from accidents like them falling from a far height or being caught in an explosion, it also gives you more time to save a pet if another player is harming them, but the main reason id like to see it added is because it lets you personalize pets like bees and pigs who don't have collars or have only one texture.

I think it would be cute since it essentially functions similar to what a name tag is for and lets players pick and choose what they consider a pet or what's worthy of being protected. (Also, it would technically be armor for pigs which is nice) (I said most neutral mobs since Endermen and Polar bears and such are in that category)

This mechanic is best for the more "Exotic" pets or pets with low health, such as Pandas, Goats, Foxes, Rabbits, Allays, Bees, Frogs, Mooshrooms, etc.

The current dark oak leaves texture uses the oak leaves texture. So, I re-textured my dark oak leaves using the pale oak leaves texture. I think it looks great.

[AI Behavior] New Archetypes for Sulfur Cubes

So I realized that there is a need of more archetypes of sulfur cubes. I was making a map involving sulfur cubes. So I wanted to add them, basically.

Hyperfast

First of all, there is no really fast and unbouncy archetype. Yes, there is fast flat but it's not that fast. I want something that is the opposite of high resistance. It would be fun if there was a more controllable version of bouncy. I coded it for the map with the attributes and it works fine imo. I was originally going to make this all glass blocks, but learned that transparent blocks can't be absorbed by sulfur cubes for a reason. Therefore, i chose the blocks that are glass-like or crystal irl. Yes, i changed which archetype they result at.

Attributes:

Knockback Resistance: -2

Bounciness: 0.5

Friction: 0.1

Air Drag: 0.01

Horizontal: 0.9125

Vertical: 0.09

Floats in Water: Yes

Blocks:

Obsidian

Crying Obsidian

Amethyst Block

Budding Amethyst

All Quartz Blocks

Sea Lantern

Redstone Lamp

Glowstone (i am not sure if this is a crsytal or not)

Fast Jumpy

So this is a weird but imo a fun one. It also has a slow jumpy counter part. The main point is it being able to jump. Like hopping. Idk, like a rabbit does. It is not like bouncy, because it bounces ones and doesn't bounce again. It is hard to explain but i tried it in-game and it is kinda cool, could be used for some kind of sulfur cube parkour? Maybe it could represent marbles as a ball. The blocks of this archetype are packed mud and mud bricks, because i couldn't really come with a good idea. Sorry for that.

Attributes:

Knockback Resistance: -0.8

Bounciness: 0.2

Friction: 0.6

Air Drag: 6

Horizontal: 0.4125

Vertical: 0.09

Floats in Water: Yes

Blocks:

Packed Mud

Mud Bricks

Typhaboard (from my "Cattails and Nether Cattails post)

Slow Jumpy

This is the slow counterpart of jumpy. The blocks of this archetype are blocks of gems.

Attributes:

Knockback Resistance: -0.4

Bounciness: 0.2

Friction: 1

Air Drag: 18

Horizontal: 0.4125

Vertical: 0.09

Floats in Water: No

Blocks:

All Ores

Diamond Block

Emerald Block

Lapis Block

Aquatic

This would be same with slow bouncy with a twist: it stays doesn't float or sink in water. It just remains suspended. That's something that can happen irl when the liquid's density is equal to object's density, and i have realised that there no such an archetype. Also it could be cool if it acted like regular in water but acted like slow flat outside water, not sure tho. The blocks would be prismarine blocks.

Attributes:

Basically same with slow bouncy except it remains suspended in water.

Blocks:

All Prismarine Blocks

Low Gravity

Basically low gravity archetype as there is no archetype like that. It's kinda boring because it becomes a longer duration bouncy but still kinda cool. The blocks of this archetype are end related blocks.

Attributes:

Knockback Resistance: -1

Bounciness: 0.5

Friction: 0.1

Air Drag: 0.1

Horizontal: 0.4125

Vertical: 0.09

Floats in Water: Yes

Gravity: 0.04

Blocks:

End Stone

End Stone Bricks

All Purpur Blocks

Conclusion

That was the suggestion. I also thought of a faster archetype where it would be the same with fast flat but it would have -1.5 knockback resistance. But it would be kinda lame and couldn't think of any blocks for that so I didn't add it. Other than that, i think these ideas would be cool for minecraft and useful for players like me. Thanks for reading!

[Blocks & Items] I've had my Minecraft world since 2014, one thing I wish I could disable

is creepers doing damage to blocks. Its literally the only thing that makes me rage in the entire game, and now that I have some stuff thats been around for 12 years, the thought of a creeper spawning behind me and blowing them up makes me not want to go anywhere near my older sites that were built with friends I haven't heard from in years.

I don't want to disable achievements in my world, but I am so tired of creepers sneaking up on me and destroying stuff that they are usually what causes me to stop playing for years at a time.

Last time I played was 2021, so much new stuff has been added since then. I've been playing for 3 days and Im already tired of creepers sneaking up on me in the middle of the day, when they shouldn't even be spawning and leaving giant craters, forcing me to go find dirt since they don't even drop all the blocks.

A few minutes ago I had one almost force me to uninstall the game entirely, I'd just finish building a memorial for my grandmother, and it spawned mid day, middle of a field right behind me and exploded, only narrowly avoiding damage to what I was working on.

I don't care if they kill me still, but I want to disable block damage /only on creepers/ without screwing up a 12 year old save.

Im on bedrock edition btw

[General] Copper faster oxidiese in sulfur caves

I really need this, I do some buildings with fully oxidiesed copper and it's very annoying to wait but now if you will place copper blocks, chains and so on in sulfur caves it will oxidies twise as much faster. So this change will induce players to explore the world to build productive oxidies farms. Also it will finally make this biome a little bit usefull

[Blocks & Items] What new way to obtain the Netherite upgrade template would you add?

The current only ways to gain a useable amount are:

1) obtaining one from a Bastion Remnant and duping it with a stack of diamonds

2) obtaining multiple from multiple Bastion Remnants

As you can see this isn't in line with Minecraft's playstyle diversity of different ways to do the same thing. I still concede with gating the template behind Nether exploration as a whole.

My way would be a new Bad Omen Nether Fortress event; you can just get your first and dupe it, or commit to purely this new method. Bastions were originally intended as an optional side quest, so they should gate only the cosmetic items they currently do.

Making Piglins trade it if a nearby player was to all Nether biomes per u/PetrifiedBloom's suggestion would pile up superfluous templates; perhaps they can only trade it if given some additional existing item they consume upon giving the template, as if turning it into the template.

[Command] New Gamerule: LimitlessEnchants

This gamerule is simple. If toggled on, it will make it so that all enchanting books found naturally (ie. chests and villagers) will still follow normal levels (1-5) but you can now combine enchantments to… well anything. It sounds cool. Like, we ALL want a sharpness X sword in vanilla. Or a punch X bow.

This gamerule will also remove compatibility issues like Mending and Infinity can now be put together. All types of sword damage increase enchants and protection enchants can now be put together with no issue. Silk touch and fortune will not become compatible because that would be a dupe. But as far as I know this would be the only exception.

But here’s the thing. This gamerule is no pushover. It will also result in EXTREMELY expensive enchanting costs. So hey. That’s what you gotta grind for.

[Bedrock Edition] Increasing sensitivity for controller users

This is a really simple request, but it would be really nice if sensitivity for controller users on bedrock edition wasn’t so slow, even when set to 100 it doesn’t compare to using a touchscreen or using a mouse and keyboard.

That’s it…lol

[Sounds] Readd the Wolf Howl Sound

This is a rather basic suggestion. Basically readd the unused wolf howl sound. I was doing a map and wanted to use this sound as a sound effect for my snowy area. But I couldn't find it! This sound was added in Beta 1.8 and has been in the game for a long, long time. It has been removed when the new wolf types came. Well, why? There was no reason to remove it at all. Actually, why don't they add new howling sounds to other wolf types as well, instead of removing it? Why don't wolves howl when a full moon rises, for example? It is kinda weird and pointless, and now I do not have a sound which would be very useful to me if it was in the game. So basically, i suggest readding the entity.wolf.howl sound and maybe also adding it to all new types of wolves as well and possibly even make it so they actually use this sound in the game.

[Plants & Food] Stages of tree growth

Thumbnail
gallery
116 Upvotes

There will be an intermediate stage of tree growth. It's no longer a sapling, but not yet an adult tree. The trunk of such a tree is as thick as a stone fence.

This change will make the tree's growth more gradual.

How can this be implemented technically? At the top of the trunk of a thin young tree, a special crown block will be located. It looks like an ordinary one, but it has functionality. It carries information about what kind of tree should grow and the time it will take. When the right moment arrives, the thin young tree disappears, and a mature one appears in its place.

[Plants & Food] Cherry Trees should spawn pink leaves in a small (maybe 7x7 or 9x9 around the sapling) radius when grown

Allows them to be obtained even if your cherry sapling was from a Wanderer and not a grove, and saves time if the nearest one is too far from your base. And you save bonemeal as well. They wouldnt occupy the entire radius but scattered around like bonemealing grass.

[Magic] Totem of Bridging

When a player is about to walk off of a block while holding a Totem of Bridging, a block from their inventory is placed in the air beneath their feet.

The Totem can be configured to replace water or lava with blocks when the player is about to walk off a block into either liquid.

[Blocks & Items] Ender Miasma ― New End "Ore" Concept (Putting an End to the End)

NGL, I might start a little series on my takes on the End dimension and how to enrich it while staying faithful to its barren wasteland identity. It's part of a larger series called Putting an End to the End, where I'll supply y'all with ideas to make the end as engaging as the other dimensions.

My first idea is the highly anticipated "end ore." Here's my opinion on it first off:

  1. I don't want this ore to be another tier. One of the main things I don't like about this game is its armor/tool progression, you spend time getting iron just to replace it with diamond then with netherite. I think the end ore would be a more universal reward if it wasn't just another tier above netherite but served its own niches. Think golden gear, it isn't the best protection but has amazing enchantability and keeps piglins passive. If every tier was just superior by stats and had no other skill, then what's the point of grinding for one inferior set when I can get a better one? (I plan to talk about this and my ideas for it in more detail one day)
  2. To fit the themes of the end (following decay, finality, etc.), I kind of want to make Ender Miasma some kind of biological toxic waste goop and not some mineable ore or crystal.
  3. In order to make it valuable, its value will be on its fragility and limited amount. For example, diamonds were so iconic back then because of their rarity and that nobody sold or traded for it.

With these out of the way, I will go in with my idea for Ender Miasma.

End Miasma

  • End Miasma is a new liquid block that can be found in the outer end islands.
  • It adopts a chunky green color. I mainly did this because I feel like making it purple would just make it blend in with everything else. I also did it because green is a very alien color. Discovering this new 'ore' is meant to say "Ooh, I discovered something new! Though it looks a bit suspicious..."
  • The End Miasma occurs in medium-to-large cavities inside the end islands, your main cue to find it is subtle gurgling noises from beneath the surface.
  • This liquid's main flowing behavior is random, it flows out not at fixed amounts but random amounts, say 1-3 blocks. Though, it wanes and waxes, it actively shifts its flowing. Players will have to take a small step back when near End Miasma.
  • End Miasma's main danger though is its fragility. Any mob or player that touches it, by flow or source, causes it to spontaneously combust (not explosively but like, disappear out of thin air). It's like whoever's touching it is a sponge and the waste is water, it loses part of itself but doesn't reform like regular water flow. Additionally, it doesn't infinitely flow like the other liquids but actually acts like a finite resource.
  • This liquid doesn't help speed up the growth of chorus fruit either despite the theme of each dimension's water exhibiting the growth of their crops, like water with the overworld crops and lava with the nether wart, chorus fruit doesn't experience additional growth with end miasma next to it.
  • However, there is a way to safely contain end miasma for use: Buckets. If you click on end miasma by the source block it can be contained inside it without combusting, granting you a Bucket of End Miasma.
  • End Miasma rarely occurs as small traces of source blocks on the surface, but this is incredibly rare.
  • The further you go out into the outer end islands, the less end miasma occurs. Cavities become smaller, end miasma that broke to the surface becomes even rarer.

End Miasma's Crafting Recipes

Miasmic Eye of Ender

Currently deciding how many buckets of end miasma are needed for this, but for now, I'll go with 3. You decide!

Bucket of Miasma Eye of Ender Bucket of Miasma
Bucket of Miasma

Not only do I think that the eye of ender needs more uses than just being a path to strongholds or ender chests (which are already obscure), but it serves a pretty important niche when traveling through places like the nether and end: finding your way back home.

A big scare is forgetting where your portal has gone, and this item will help you with finding those portals.

  • Upon throwing it, the eye floats, points, and travels like a regular eye of ender.
  • The MEoE will begin to slowly travel to the nearest nether portal in the nether, end gate in the outer end, or ender portal in the overworld.
  • Upon arriving 10-15 blocks from the portal, the MEoE will gradually blacken before bursting.

Acoustic Relocator

Hopefully this gives the goat horn a use!

Bucket of Miasma Goat Horn Chorus Fruit

My main idea for this is for it to become a counter to the ancient cities.

  • With this equipped, up to one accidental vibration to a skulk sensor ~5 blocks near are muffled out and visible relocated. The echoes visibly scatter and don't trigger it much.
  • Sounds > ~5 blocks out from a skulk sensor are all on you, requiring careful positioning to ensure they don't become a threat and the acoustic relocator's use is maximized.
  • The Acoustic Relocator has 6 uses until it breaks.

Overall

I hope that this addition is able to bring spirit into the end like other dimensions. It's main purpose isn't to become another armor tier but serves niches that can help the player in a variety of ways.

Thank you for reading my idea and I'll be glad to receive your feedback!
