Average
We are always seeking the best of things, best food, best hairdresser, best shit haircut, best Chinese, best tree.
I wanna hear. What are the most average things in newcastle. Things that you definitely would not write home about

I moved back from Sydney a couple of years ago and honestly most food is average. It makes sense, anything that’s good has no competition and so they charge a lot. Or they charge a lot because they make ungodly large portion sizes or both. The other thing a lot of the average places do is put a hat on a hat. Euro patisserie for example. They can’t just make a chocolate tart and make the shell and the chocolate fantastic, they instead make both of those things pretty average but they put some chocolate wedge in it and some gold dust and some of this and some of that. Lots of pubs do this too. Have a prawn pasta in an olive oil sauce and we put honeyed pumpkin bites in it also the honey is hot honey also there is chorizo also there is cayan pepper in it too also chipotle also shavings of jalapeño cheese!

As a former Sydneysider and just commented about average Lebanese food. That's the one thing I do miss about Sydney.

I’ve moved up from Sydney nearly 30 years ago and in that time there has only ever been one true authentic delicatessen that could be the equal of one in Sydney and that closed about 15 years ago. Will someone PLEASE open a really good deli, you’re going to make a killing if you do

In the same boat. Newcastle food is so expensive and just so mid. Just throw everything at the wall and hope someone will pay for it.

Yes Newcastle is so expensive to eat out compared to Sydney and it’s usually so average. Don’t have any proper authentic places frequented by people from that culture either. They’re all bland and westernised.

Asian Delight taking over The Ritz cafe on Brunker Rd.
It's not the same, they aren't open when you're fanging for a decent burger, and when they are open, it's mid at best.
And, dammit! I want to choose my lollies from a counter.

I worked at the ritz back in its heydays , it was an institution

You're not wrong! My kid ended up being friends with the last owners kid. Man, he was spoilt. I'm glad he got to embrace that milk bar situation.
They are sorely missed

It made a couple of generations of that family wealthy, very nice people and hard working too

Anoxa, one of the owners, wild person to work for. Wonder how she’s doing these days and if she’s allowed near people.

If you live outside the upper middle class lambton/kotara etc then pretty much “best coffee shop around here” is often very mid

Petrol station coffee (generally). Sorry, I’m not spending $7 on a small latte, but I also won’t drink instant, so a petrol station coffee usually around the $3 mark hits the spot alright when I’m running on time for work (which is running late by my anxiety clock)

I thought they all had barista coffee now which you pay barista prices for …

Milkshakes. I cannot find a decent old school chocolate milkshake in this damn town.

Before I moved away I tried a milkshake at the old Jim’s after it got sold. It’s a flavour I’ve had from them before. I don’t know what they did to it but it was revolting

Charlestown Macca’s is about as mid as it gets, order is wrong just over 50% of the time. I still go back as I like to gamble. 7/11 coffees are pretty mid too, I still love em

if we’re talking about the maccas on the highway the problem is the workers, everytime i go there they’re all just standing around chatting when they have orders to make and give out. i try to avoid it as much as possible

The Chinese takeaway near Woolworths at Glendale supercentre. I tried a few dishes from there the other day and it was the blandest Chinese food I think I've ever eaten.

Like overrated things? I think Eastern Tiger is overhyped. Galaxy Buffet is Better. There might even be better ones out there.

I’d say it is now, all the houses have had millions spent on them and sold for multi millions and professionals.

I can't remember when was the last time I saw a post about our penis tower, or even a comment about it.
Almost like it ain't there any more.

Was in New York recently and had Chinese Food Sezchuan style. Not expensive even with the exchange rate lt was amazing. Chinese restaurants in Newcastle and most of Australia are generally bland Cantonese style. People here would love it.

Sherwood cafe bacon and egg rolls are about as average as it gets. Not offensively bad but they're not great. The price redeems them slightly.

Golbergs. It's not fantastic but it's consistent and is a staple of Newcastle cuisine.
The parks and such are alright for the size of the place, there's usually a quieter one around if you need to go to one.
There's pretty much all the shops you could need in the area and then some, so we're not really missing out.
Newcastle airport does alright.

I patroned many average clubs and pubs around town back in the 90's. None of them are there anymore. Maybe its because they were average?

That we lost the Cambo. I know other venues have emerged but they're no Cambo.
