As an intended seed dispersal method, a lot of that type of fruit is hard core. At that speed and weight I'd imagine its insides go everywhere while alerting anything with olfactory receptors in a 50km2 radius. 

I remember almost being KO'd/demolished by coconuts a tenth of the size of that thing.

The reason people catch them is that they crack open on impact (spoils faster). It's not enough to spread the fruit out, but animals smell it and seek it out. Tigers love durian, btw
