Got to see Night Vale live along with musical guest Mal Blum (fantastic, check out their new album "The Villain") in Seattle last night and it was such a fantastic show! (Ft: Disparition's piano 😎)

The whole vibe is so alluring and pleasing to me. I like the spooky yet cozy small town vibe. I like the idea of “roleplaying” as a listener to the towns radio station. I like so much about it. I just can’t get around the actual show. I’ve tried a few times to get into it but I can never grasp the story. It just feels like an endless list of mildly spooky mostly disconnected short updates about the town. Maybe that is the point? But if so it just seems to kill any mystery or depth that could easily be built. Am I just starting in the wrong place? Am I missing something? Should I read up on lore somewhere beforehand? What are you guys actually getting out of the listening experience? A story? Or just a vibe?

I recently started from the beginning of the show (Dog Park) after many years of ignoring advice from various folks, and of course I'm completely hooked. Especially in our current social environment, it feels like the only thing absurd enough to make me feel happy and content.

The trouble is that when I began rushing about telling people I was finally listening to it, my current social circle IRL was very blah about the news. Mostly they had never heard of it and my description didn't entice them, but some had listened to it long ago and didn't care for it, which was almost worse. Even my adult kids are just mildly patient with my enthusiasm for it, which is a bummer since they usually share my sense of humor.

Anyway, I'm going to keep listening because it brings me joy, but I thought I'd come here and see if anyone else had to deal with this unexpected isolation. Perhaps they're all being *forced* to feign disinterest by the Sheriff's Secret Police. Hmm...

Because what is life without death? Death, in a way, brings meaning to life, for what is the point of experiencing a life that never ends? There will always be a later to explore. But the threat of death brings a finality to life, it brings urgency to life. And it is cruel, and it snatches people too young, and yet it is so mortal, to care about death. To anticipate an end. To avoid having your life cut short. It is so mortal to want, and yearn, and love, and all consciousness has an end. It is inevitable, the call of the tomb. We all return to the earth someday, decaying nutrients cycling back into the dirt, to feed new generations.

Because what is the point of a story that anticipates no death? The curse of immortality is to lose and lose and slip away into oblivion, with no end to the curse that consciousness becomes. Already, without that curse, people turn to ways to soften the harsh realities of the world, and the cruel words of the mind. To ignore death as an inevitable result of a story is to ignore its legacy.

For death is only the end when you believe the story is about you, and yet death is not the end of your story. You live on in the memories of people who knew you. You are a patch of the quilt that makes up your loved ones, and even death cannot erase the mark you made in the world. Because even as your memory fades and dies with the people who loved you, the Earth remembers your existence. She is nurtured by your body, and she shares the love of your short existence with the new life that springs from your grave.

You will never truly be gone, because just as you are made from the dust of dying stars, the atoms that made up your body will never cease to exist, for matter cannot be created or destroyed, it only changes form. And millennia from now, the matter that made up your body will occupy the universe, as the building blocks that make up the temporary shape it holds in a snapshot of time, may look completely different in a matter of seconds or eons, but the fact remains that it was once you. And your very being lives on in the universe, for as long as it exists.

Be proud of your place in the cosmos, listeners, it is small, and yet, it is. How unlikely, how fantastic, and stupid, and how wonderful it is that you get to play a small part in the beauty of the universe unraveling.

What a situation we find ourselves in, as a community.

What genre is the series considered and where do I find more like it? I've recently realized this type of humor is probably my favorite, but I'm not sure what to search for to find more podcasts/shows/books/etc with the same style of comedy and horror.

So I got the Nightvale RPG and sent the characters to some friends when one of them noticed that Cormac and Hiram are both mentioned as being four-headed dragons. But looking at anything else from the podcast etc, I've only seen them described as five headed dragons, so does anyone know why they'd have one less head ? I feel like it might also be a typo? Cause when his heads colours and law practices are described, there's five different ones.

Anyone else here autistic and finds the podcast amazing for helping you to regulate, chill out, and just feel good again? (I have no idea what that says about me 🙈😂) I’m not sure if I’m explaining properly what I mean - but aside from it being fantastic in general, this podcast has really helped my autistic brain out and I’ve no idea why!

Clearly the backpacks are NOT causing autism, they are infact, helping it!

been re-listening lately, i'm a sucker for the classics. all time fave is by far the strexcorp plot, but within that it's the summer reading challenge+valentine's day subplot

I want to emphasize that I DONT want that to be the default - the weather is such an integral part of Night Vale - but I fall asleep to cecil's voice and if I can't sleep fast enough, the weather always wakes me up again. I've listened to every episode several times because I just put the show on repeat and man, my only gripe with using it as a sleep aid is the weather.

I know this show isn't MEANT as a sleep aid, but it's a great one

So I've been listening to this show almost since the very beginning, and I know there's always a sort of ad read for night vale's other projects at the start. Hey, we're doing books, we're doing shows, we're doing merch, we're doing other podcasts. That segment has always been a thing and I feel sort of nostalgic about it, I'd feel off if it were missing. But for the last two episodes there's also been a segment about Alice Isn't Dead immediately after the weather and I kind of don't like that, because for the last decade or so my brain has literally accepted the music as a diegetic weather report, part of Night Vale's weirdness, so this feels really disruptive for some reason.

The app I use has visual ads on the home page, no audio interruptions ever, so I'm used to the story just being The Story once it gets going, and I might be feeling more strongly about this than the average person, do your best not to be snide about it.

Does anyone have any insight into why these are a thing now? Are they the new norm?

EDIT: Please don't tell me it costs money to make podcasts, I know that and am not objecting to ads on the whole, it stands out to me because I don't even remember hearing mid-show ads during the height of the pandemic. That's why I'm wondering if anyone here knows something I don't.

Hi! Posting here because I dug up this old t-shirt from my closet - which as far as I can remember was official merch around 2012-2013. I have not been able to find it anywhere online, the only image I have come up with is the original graphic by Melissa Shaw on the wikis. Does anyone else own one? Are there still places you could get one? I was going to give it away but now I'm wondering whether I should keep it in a safe as a rare collector's item LOL

discovered WTNV a few months ago and have just finished 142. but I was just looking at the youtube channel and it seems they have not posted any other podcasts for 3 years. Have they reverted to just doing nightvale?

So I have never listened to any of the recordings of the live shows, or attended them, and though Joseph and Jeffrey claim that there is little overlap in the live shows, the one that confused me so much was the fact that Carlos and Cecil have a chilld??? I love little Esteban, I love that he’s getting into witchcraft now too (it’s so fun to see his misadventures) but I was genuinely so confused until they uploaded the “Cecil’s Secret” audio clip a few years ago.

Has anybody else not listened to the live show where they revealed this and was equally confused? What was your reaction?

(Also don’t read me for the spoiler tag, i know it was years ago, but we all fall behind on episodes LOL)

I’m on audiobook and about halfway through. I’m at the part where Diane was just talking to the man in the tan coat holding the deer skin bag and saw him run off into the distance. Diane and Jackie started talking and I cannot remember for the life of me where or when Diane got the note that said King city. Can someone remind me? I feel like I need to go back because I can’t remember when we switched from focusing on Jacqui’s life to focusing on Diane’s but I’m too curious to go back before I finish it

I haven’t listened to the podcast.. yet. I also admittedly did not search for this answer because I didn’t want a spoiler. Thanks!!
