looking for recs!

hi! i have never consciously listened by noise rock and i just signed up to this subreddit, but real love by big thief is one of my favourite songs ever and ive been told this is the genre it belongs to.

i especially love the guitar solo of that song, the way it goes from borderline unlistenable to absolutely cathartic and warm in the span of a minute. it's the contradiction that gets to me -- the noise part allows me to store energy and then the melodic part lets me release it.

what kind of artists would you reccomend to me, based on this information?

Those early (imo highly underrated) Cindy Lee records like Malenkost or maybe Model Express definitely fall into the noise rock/noise pop territory though! And of course Pat's previous works with Women. As for other recs for OP I think Yo La Tengo and Dinnosaur Jr. + maybe 90s/2000s Sonic youth albums could scratch that noisy indie rock itch.

Definitely NOT noise rock. BIG THIEF could probably be considered as "indie folk" or "indie pop", so you should search for something adjacent to that kind of genres.

But if you want some suggestions for something that you might like, try "S", the solo project of Jenn Champion (aka Jenn Ghetto).

i think i misworded the post a little, i know big thief is not noise rock but i have been told real love specifically as a song has some noise rock influences. basically i wanted something that sounds like it but i enjoy exploring genres im unfamiliar with so i thought i could ask here

Go and listen to the Jesus Lizard album "Goat". That's a good litmus test for whether noise rock is your thing.

as ive said in other comments i know they are not nosie rock but i had been told the song specifically was. i love listening to new genres and often do but i find it's easier to start from a sound im partially familiar with to ease myself into it and properly enjoy it. but I take to most music very well after a little while actually

You might go for noise pop more, which isn't really "pop" at all but really just catchy indie rock with extra feedback and distortion. Maybe try Times New Viking, Feeble Little Horse, Jesus and Mary Chain, Sleigh Bells

Noise rock is a much harsher, frenetic, often depraved strain of that type of thing, both lyrically and musically

Edit: if you like the noisier side of Big Thief, definitely listen to Wednesday (specifically their last record Bleeds)

im fascinated by genres and i love listening to new music but i am not good at telling genres apart so i often ask my friends. i had been told that the song "real love" specifically could be thought of as noise rock and i wanted to explore something i liked there in any other genre that focuses on that more nosey part

I mean no disrespect, but if you feel any part of that song is borderline unlistenable, I don't think you're gonna like noise rock. Sounded closer to the loud parts in slowcore imo. Give Codeine and deathcrash a listen

Caspar Brotzmann Massaker - The Tribe

Tho its also a lot more than just noise rock as well (a lot of psych and just straight up experimental shit), this is some top tier noise rock that is so insanely underrated.

And I'll throw you my personal favorite as a bonus. They love to play with the dynamics of pretty chords, long rests, and riffs/progressions that will peel the paint off your walls
