My buddy’s dad worked for Fermi Lab in the early 1980’s and had a suction cup modem for the handset. We used to dial in to play a crude version of DnD. All words on the screen.

Very early version of how people connected to the internet. People would actually use the (landline, not mobile) phone to connect the computer to the internet, hence the term dialup.
These landline phones actually looked like the yellow phone in the image.
The image is the window you got on the computer screen when attempting to connect to the internet.
When modems became more common the image was still used on most computers since computers didn't know if the user used dialup or a proper modem.
First internet at my parents house when I was about 10 or so used a modem. Compared to now it's ancient and you'd need a month to download what is now a simple file.

Come to think of it, I think my elementary school did that, I remember the principal beong very proud of his computer and making a big announcement of it.
At home my dad's first computer was a win95 however but it was with the second computer he got that had internet iirc.

The only wireless systems that existed were radio waves (for radio or tv channels) and the rare car phone or brick sized cellphone. Wifi or bluetooth have yet to be invented.

Truth, 25+ years Go I went from docsys 1, 1mb internet to new house, dial up only. I sent up network sharing between my computer and my wife's, 14, 400 baud was all we could manage. Took another 3 years till we got back to cable.
Now fiber, 900mb up/down $65 a month.

That’s Hyper Terminal by Hilgraeve still available today but paid-for not free in the OS.
My own journey went something like this if memory serves me right;
Hayes 300 baud -> Miracle Technology 1200/75 baud -> Supra 2400 baud -> Courier HST 9600 baud -> US Robotics 14.4k baud -> US Robotics 28.8K baud -> US Robotics 56k baud -> Demon Internet tenner-a-month!

Took 3 days to download a 3 MB MP3 file. Packed it in 3 1.4MB .ARJ archives to transport it home. Took three trips because one disk constantly failed only to find out my computer wasn't powerful enough to play the damn thing.

Then when it would get really slow, it would come up with an absurd connection time of something like 59 years. So all you could do is go away, come back an hour later. Then it would either be 3 minutes or another 226 years. There was no in between.
All of this to log on, see if anyone sent you an email, realize it was just your grandma replying with nonsense to your last email, and send her one back telling her you loved her. Maybe you'd go to the AOL chat rooms. Maybe you'd try to Ask Jeeves a question. Maybe you'd try to bid on something on early eBay. Either way, your browsing session would always get interrupted by someone dialing the house phone.

People joke about how slow modem connections were, but they are also probably talking about a 56k modem - which was lightspeed for a modem. I started out with a 110 baud acoustic coupler modem where you put the handset into a pair of rubber cups. Then we upgraded to 300 baud. Then 1200 full duplex. The 2400. I remember 14,4k and 28.8k modems before getting all the way to 56k. And this was around the time call waiting started being available, so don't forget to disable call waiting before starting your connection ... fun times!

Yep, I had a 110/300, around the time I started to learn about AT commands.
iirc, 56K (USR?) had some kind of paid-for firmware patch that I really wanted for a while (maybe a V.92 upgrade?)--All I remember is that when the patch applied successfully the training signals changed to include extra "boingg" sounds.

Easily 30 min to download one song. The only thing worse than the DL speed was setting up an album or list of tracks to rip while you were at school all day only to come home and see the internet disconnected and the download paused not long after you left.

I don't remember that specific one but I'm getting old. But I like people complaining about their phone taking 5 minutes for an update when I remember it taking 3 days straight to update a computer on dial up.

When I was a software engineer on a secret project at McDonnell-Douglas in 1980, I was supposed to use a dial-up connection to their own system with a multi-line phone in a bull-pen area, where a co-worker nervously tapped the switch hook.
Fortunately, they also had a terminal room elsewhere.

My wife and her mom used to get so mad I told them she had to call before or after 6pm 10pm as i needed it for games... so most of the time early on dialuo era if you called my house between 6pm-930-10pm you got the buzzing beeping... she loved it when we finally got cable modem lol.

It was slow, but reliably enough that you had enough time to make a sandwich and/or use the bathroom and knowing you’d be connected by the time your butt touched the chair

After this image was a afternoon of downloading A mp3 off kazaaa with my pentium 1 tower with a cd player cd burner and 2 3 1/2 floppy drives. Oh and i had a 100ft phone line i ran from the kitchen to my bedroom that i had to disconnect and roll up every time i was finished
