This is the case of roots. One user recommend putting it in water/using water instead of bark while growing roots. What would you recommend? What should i do and how does it look? Hopefully its fixable 🥹

(The weird orange thing on spike is cinnamon. I applied it on cuts as a antifungal since there was already some rotting on the roots)

Im very new to orchids and have scoured this sub hoping to find the answers i need but im really at a loss and looking for some advice! I will go ahead and give some backstory.

So i got this orchid early June from a local nursery and it was doing great for about a month. It pretty quickly dropped some of its blooms and when i checked the roots and the moss it was pretty moldy. It went about a week and a half without water due to other plants having gnats and i didnt want to invite them to the orchid so it being moldy didnt make sense to me.

the other plants were getting repotted and fresh dirt due to the gnat problem, so i went ahead and repotted the orchid. this time in orchid bark since the moss seemed to be holding way too much moisture. I figured it would drop its remaining blooms but i wasn’t expecting what has happened now.

Since then, leaves started yellowing and dropping from the bottom up. The stems died so i trimmed them down to hopefully promote new growth. I know it can take a long time for it to grow new stems, But after a fully green leaf dropped this morning i am at a loss. Now i am left with just one lonely leaf and no idea how to help it.

I have been bottom watering as i see the roots turn silvery, and it sits on a counter getting indirect light. We only have west facing windows so i occasionally move it closer to get a bit more light. Sorry for the entire book but i figure the more details the better!

Took it out to check on the roots through the clear pot and the last leaf came off. honestly wondering now if its crown rot. And if so im assuming no hope? Im so confused as it was genuinely not watered that incredibly often, but obviously i did something wrong. So now my question is, if i do get a new orchid. How to avoid this?

Definitely over for this orchid. super sad to lose it but I can learn from it moving forward. Leaving this post up in case it can help anyone else with the same problem, and if anyone has any more tips to avoid this.

Rescued this Phalaenopsis orchid from the side of the road a few weeks ago on the way back from a plant shopping spree. Was clearly neglected and never been repotted. There was some green so I decided there was something to save!!

I took it home and made up my own soil mix of hand ripped bark (as seen in the pictures), perlite, some coco coir, and a little bit of wood charcoal from a fire we had a while ago. Got rid of the weird peat moss thing they grow them in and cut away the brown roots.

I'm a bit impatient but getting the feeling it's not working. There are some green roots but the majority are still yellow. I'm worried the soil is too wet for too long but I would expect the roots to be sucking it up if that was the case??

I also got a bit of dirt in the crown and not sure if that's a huge disaster.

There's also a small bit of what looks like mold in the pot.

About two meters away from a north facing window( in the southern hemisphere and this is definitely the brightest room in my house by far). Wondering about a semi hydro or bare rooted set up??

Tl;dr. First orchid is a rescue feeling unsure I am doing the right thing, looking for advice.

The leaves have been so droopy lately so I decided to do some research. Pulled it out to inspect and the roots are mostly pale and white looking. Some are still firm. Does it just need some water?

Has anyone grown orchids in an enclosed terrarium without air circulation and had success?

This year most of my flowers are... growing wrong (small, malformed, weak, sometimes aborting). I have no idea of what could be the cause of the problem (fertiliser going bad? Temperatures too high?). Does anyone have any suggestion of what could be happening? The pseudobulbs are otherwise fine, but the flowers...

This is the third leaf that has fallen off this orchid in the last few weeks and even though the leaf doesn’t feel wet, it’s very limp and didn’t dry out the way the oldest leaf on an orchid would. It’s also a leaf that fell off somewhere in the middle not the bottom. I’m wondering if this could be an infection.

hi guys this is my first time trying to take care of a plant and i recently bought an orchid

just after i bought it, two of the flowers bloomed but now they are all wilted and yellow, the roots are green and i only water my orchid when the roots turn a silver colour

i read somewhere that i should be concerned only when the leaves turn yellow but its been wilted for a while now so im a bit concerned

any tips would be appreciated

Dear humans of the orchid community, I need your help to Identify these orchids for me. Last week I went to a local nursery with my parents and I bought these 3. The first one is Cattleya, 2nd is cymbidium and the third is phalaenopsis. Please help me out guys I really need their names for future studies or other purposes. His care is I moist the bed whenever dry and keep it by a humidifier.

He was doing good but above the humidifier is a fan and after constant use of it I Believe the constant cold killed 1/3 leaves now only two.

I moved him to an area with more sunlight and had a routine of switching it back and forth when the fan is it. He is somehow dying more

The only other thing I did was spray his roots with miracle grow fertilizer, it was only a little. I used it before and saw progress and thought it was safe. Please help I had him for like 3 years, I only just stared trying to take care of him and he somehow lost a leg.

I just repotted my very first orchid, but it keeps drying out really quickly because the bark never actually absorbs the water.

I soaked it for close to an hour last night, but the bark (and roots) already look dry today.

Its taken days for it too open all the way an mature and the red has increased. It is also now fragrent! Its like daffodils and something else. And its strong becuse i can still smell it with rinhovirus (a cold)! Wooo!

I picked up these 8 new orchids last week to add to my collection (6 Vanda, 1 Dendrobium, and 1 Rhychostyris)... though I'm new to Vanda and Rhy., I am stoked to keep them healthy and earn flowers from them as we grow together!

As I understand it, the Vanda, in particular, generally require a little more attention. I plan to secure a more permanent home for them in the house, making watering easier/more frequent, and likely keeping in a more humid area.

With that said, I would love suggestions or pictures of your setups for these genera specifically while keeping them indoor. I was thinking about building a cedar rack and adding a humidity tray with a nearby localized humidifier/fan (but more permanent and well-designed than what I have pictured). I'm not sure an indoor greenhouse setup is necessary and would like to avoid too "ugly" of a placement, but I'm open to ideas. I live in Raleigh, NC and haven't had issue with my other orchids (Oncidium, Dendrobium, Cattleya, Phalaenopsis) as long as I'm not away too long. Thank you! 💜
