Not life-changing money obviously, but that's what I find interesting about apps.

You build something once, keep improving it, and occasionally people around the world discover it and pay for it while you're doing something completely unrelated.

People pay for a single lifetime purchase, though the app is free also but you get more features with a lifetime sub.

I am so sick of seeing the same five "financial freedom" gurus on my feed telling me how I can make $10k a month by just typing three prompts into an image generator or having an AI write some low effort kids book. It is 2026 and if you havent realized by now that the AI gold rush for regular people is 99% about selling the shovel, I dont know what to tell you. Every time I see a post about a faceless youtube channel or an automated blog, it turns out the guy posting it has a link to a $497 course in his bio. Its all just noise. The market is so oversaturated with garbage AI content that the algorithms are literally built to bury it now. Unless you are some genius dev building the actual tech, "passive income with AI" is basically just a lottery where the house always wins and the house is the guy selling you the tutorial.

I spent about four months trying to automate a niche blog with AI tools last year. I thought I was being smart, saving time on writing and SEO. Result? google absolutely nuked the site in two weeks. Total waste of time and about $200 in subscription fees for various tools. Meanwhile, my most "passive" income is still just the boring stuff. I have a tiny dividend portfolio and some money in a high yield savings account that actually pays out without me having to fight an algorithm every morning. Even my buddy who does digital templates for a very specific niche of project management for HVAC contractors makes way more and thats because he actually solved a problem instead of just spamming a generate button.

Can we talk about what actually works for people who dont have a massive following or a tech degree? Im talking about the real, boring, slow-burn stuff. Is anyone still doing well with digital assets that arent AI generated slop or maybe some small scale physical stuff? I feel like the more "techy" and "automated" a side hustle sounds, the more likely it is to be a total scam. Im looking for the stuff that actually took you six months to set up but now brings in a couple hundred bucks while you sleep. Man I'm so tired looking for passive income while being a student at the same time. Many clippers, including me, didn’t want to put in all the effort in clipping for only a few views. Endlessly looking for highlights, cutting out silence (making it fast-paced), adding the perfect subtitles... it seems like a never-ending list.

How to make money with clipping

If you've never done this before, here's the short version of how clippers actually get paid:

• Clipping campaigns. Creators and brands put up a budget and pay per 1k views on clips of their content. You post, you submit the link, you get paid at the end of the cycle. Rates vary a lot, but this is where most people start because you don't need your own audience – you just need views on that specific creator.
• Platform payouts. TikTok Creator Rewards and YouTube Shorts monetization pay out once you hit the thresholds. Slower to get going, but it stacks on top of campaign money for the exact same clip.
• Working directly with a streamer. Smaller streamers often have no one clipping them. A flat monthly rate for running their clip account is an easy pitch once you can show them numbers.
• Building the accounts themselves. A clip page with real reach is an asset. Affiliate links, promo slots, or selling the account later.

The honest part: the money is in volume and speed. One clip does nothing. Being early on the right highlight, every day, for weeks, is what actually moves it and that's exactly the part that burns people out, because manually you're watching hours of stream for maybe two usable moments. That's the whole reason I built this and I am still looking to further improve this.

I see a lot of people going all-in on X because the payouts look really good right now.

And I get it. But don’t get too comfortable.

X can change its monetization rules, reduce payouts, restrict your account, or even suspend you. You don’t control the platform, and you don’t control the rules.

Also, don’t assume today’s payouts will last forever. X has an incentive to attract more creators right now. As the platform grows and the economics change, payouts can change too.

So use X. Build followers. Network. Promote your work. Make money from it.

But don’t make it your only source of income.

Build something you own outside of X—a business, website, email list, skills, or another platform.

Take the money, but don’t depend on it.

a registry listing i forgot about sent me my only paying customer, 11 days later

i run a small tool that scrapes public complaints and scores them for whether anyone would pay to fix them. it has an mcp server, which is the part this post is about.

on aug 14 i pushed a listing to the official mcp registry. four files, no product code in any of them, one afternoon of work. then i forgot it existed.

mcpmarket scraped the registry and built a page off it. on aug 25 that page sent me exactly one visitor. they signed up 15:14, created an api key at 15:20, spent 22 minutes on one page, paid at 16:59. never opened my homepage or my pricing page.

for comparison, same period: 480 paid tiktok clicks with a 22 second average visit, zero sales. 673 direct sessions, zero. product hunt, five sessions, zero.

two things i didn't know before:

registry entries get scraped by other directories. one submission became pages on sites i never submitted to, and those pages keep working while you do something else.

the buyer went for the api key page first and got bounced to login. they never saw a marketing page. for anything mcp shaped, the docs and the key flow are your landing page, whatever you think your landing page is.

the stupid part, last week i started rebuilding that entire publish flow from scratch because i assumed i'd never done it. it had been live two weeks.
