I've only recently mustered the courage to wipe my 22.04 before doing a fresh install of 24.04. And boy oh boy was I surprised. Slick, perfomant, stable, no frills, customizable — absolutely everything I'd want out of a DE. Cosmic hit the ground running and personally I wouldn't be surprised COSMIC or PopOS would see a huge spike in popularity in the near future. I'll recommend it to everyone I know anyway. Preaching to the choir here or do you disagree?

Applied the most recent update (the one that removes system76-acpi-dkms) and on two separate machines when I log back in, cosmic-panel fails to launch, with this message spamming the logs:

If I do a pkill cosmic-panel you can see it flash briefly and then do the same thing. I've tried removing the entries file from .config/cosmic but that didn't change anything.

Other stuff, like workspaces, shortcuts like Super+T, etc. all work fine, so the machine's usable. It does seem to be pegging one CPU core though.

It's not on every machine though - on at least one other machine I updated, there were no issues.

Hi all, I updated my System76 computer to Cosmic a few weeks ago, and I am not able to access my terminal or the app store (formerly Pop!_Shop)? I am not quite sure how to fix this as all potential solutions to me would go through the terminal, which I cannot use. For reference, this is what my app looks like when I try to click on it from my dock:

It's just a grey box with the little gear icon. And then when I try to click on it, nothing happens. Same with CosmicTerm. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be much appreciated because otherwise I love Pop OS / System76 and would love to be able to access the terminal / app store!

I have an older computer running Pop_os to primarily act as my media server. Today I got some new videos files and when I when to move them to the drive that holds all my media it wouldn't let me copy to the drive saying it was read only.

After some tinkering around I discovered that the drive is owned by "root" and even though the account I'm logged into has full sudo privileges I can't copy or edit anything on the drive now.

The drive is an old NTFS drive from when the computer had windows for an OS and is set to auto mount so I don't have to do it manually (or even log in) when I turn it on for streaming.

I tried adding the login account (uid/gid=1000) through through the disks app. Still nope.

The only thing I can think that could have caused it is that I put Windows 10 on the computer briefly to run a program that doesn't have a linux version, but the drive with Pop OS wasn't even installed when I did it. I had a clean drive just to test the software. The media drive was still in place, but so were the other three drives and they all work fine.

Any ideas why root took the drive or how to fix it?

Recently, Steam overlay support for Wine Wayland was added in Proton-GE 11.6, but whenever I open the Steam overlay, my cursor isn't visible, and I can't select anything even with the keyboard. I can't interact with it at all. My friend tested it on GNOME with the same game and it worked fine, so this probably has something to do with COSMIC rather than it being an issue with Proton-GE? Does anyone have the same issue? and is there a way to fix this?

EDIT: I tested it again cursor is invisible I can interact with something if I hover that invisible cursor on something that I want? I was able to open the chat and I can type fine but cursor is invisible?

I found a fix using ProtonCachyOS-Wineland fixes it. I don't know why Proton-GE behaves differently but proton wineland fixed it for me.

My swap partition accidentally changed so I modified the /etc/fstab and have done an "update-initramfs -u" to update the initramfs to reflect the change. The boot sequence however is still attempting to hit the old swap partition and creating a 90 second delay in the boot process.

I'm using Limine as my bootloader. There is no /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume file. I even tried to create one with the correct entry but the boot is still pointing to the old swap partition. the update-initramfs command is updating the initramfs on both the boot and the efi disks. It also shows the correct UUID on its output.

Is there some other location in which PopOS would be hanging onto the old swap partition information? I can't seem to figure out where it's maintaining this information.

I am duel booting pop os 24.04 with windows 11, it working pretty well except when I suspend my laptop, it was showing an error and stuck there..... I tried to debug it....but no luck .... Is there a way to make it work??!

For the last few weeks (I generally update OS components daily), PopOS has randomly detected the wrong percentage for the battery and has gone into the "Battery critical" state with the (non-customisable) beeping. To make it go away, I temporarily plug it in and the battery level updates to the correct percentage. Last time, I let it beep until it shut down the machine automatically (unexpected and frustrating, losing an ongoing session with lots of RAM-only objects). Restarting shows the correct percentage, so this is not a battery issue (the battery has been replaced half a year ago with months of correct functioning). This is not a kernel problem, as even user-space TUI apps like btop show at all times the correct percentage, and it fixes itself after plugging in.

If the distro (COSMIC desktop) is unreliable, I will have to switch, but it's an unfortunate timing for me (it's a busy period), so I have to accept this along with the plethora of other UX issues and lack of customisations. A disappointment

How to install kernel 7.1 officialy in pop os ?

After the last update, I've had issues opening up flatpak installed apps (process starts, but app never opens). Anyone know how to resolve it, or if this is a known issue that I should wait for an update on?

Think I've had this happen before where my laptop won't switch over to the gpu. Think my drivers were uninstalled that one time but I checked drivers, it seems to be switchable, and neofetch at the very least prints that my 4060 max-q is detected. However, I'm still unable to get it to switch to the nvidia card even with a reboot. Reverting back to the previous kernel version, 7.0.11, fixes the issue. Profile is set to Performance. Fully updated and upgraded. Latest nvidia drivers installed, 24.04.22~1787059990~24.04~78d6358.

I wanted to see if niri or PaperWM-style scrolling could work directly inside COSMIC Comp after noticing this scrolling-tiling feature request from 2024 was still open:

I also modified cosmic-applet-tiling so you can switch directly between:

Floating | Tiling | Scrolling

Scrolling mode keeps windows on an effectively infinite horizontal strip without shrinking existing windows, while preserving COSMIC shortcuts like Super+Arrow and Super+Shift+Arrow.

I know C++ and Python, but I’m new to Rust. I built the prototype with Codex using GPT-5.6, step by step, manually testing each feature and using Codex to fix bugs and regressions before moving on.

I would be happy to share the code. I’m just not very experienced with publishing modified open-source projects on GitHub, especially for a project like cosmic-comp. I want to make sure I do it properly, with clear attribution, the correct licensing, and without creating confusion or extra work for the original developers.

So I’m going to take a little time before publishing it. If anyone familiar with COSMIC development or open-source project etiquette has advice on the best way to structure and publish the forks, I’d appreciate it.

I don’t plan to maintain this custom COSMIC fork. Ideally, an experienced Rust developer could eventually review and refactor the prototype into something suitable for an upstream PR.

And if any System76 or COSMIC contributors happen to see this, guidance would of course be welcome.

Hey i was trying to get into pop os. now basic things like making scrips that start programs like switch audio output and screens used or just "bash fcitx5 -r" are crucial for my use of my apps so i can easy restart and start different setups. i would also like to make a shortcut that opens multiple programs at once so i can start some things like faster.

now i was looking solutions up and stuff. but at the end i landed on .desktop files that executes a .sh or different files. but on Pop OS! COSMIC it seems like even that is some sort of a problem to make it work.

After seen different solution and using AI for simple copy and paste scripts and i am tired for looking all over the internet and different posts.

Please give me a really good 1 to 1 explanation on where do i get that information.

I wanna setup files that changes setting, launching programs AND restart some process like fcitx5. i would love to know how to write them. but i don't find a coherent explanation that then actually works.
