I recently went to a concert at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. I’m not suggesting Roanoke needs anything remotely on the scale of New York or Queens. What caught my attention was the venue model: a relatively intimate outdoor stadium that makes the entire event feel like an experience.

That got me thinking about Roanoke.

Elmwood Park is great at roughly 4,000 seats, but there seems to be an interesting space between Elmwood and a 10,000+ seat arena. A 6,000–7,500-seat outdoor venue could attract artists who have outgrown Elmwood while giving them the atmosphere of a packed amphitheater rather than an oversized arena.

Forest Hills also gets a lot right beyond the music — food vendors already on the grounds, places to gather, thoughtful security, good sound management and a design that respects the surrounding neighborhood.

So imagine a modern Victory Stadium:

6,000–7,500 seats
Purpose-built for concerts
Championship tennis court + additional courts
ITF/Challenger-level professional tennis
Festivals and other sporting events
Restaurants and local food vendors
Hotel/entertainment district nearby
Modern production facilities

The tennis component is what really makes this interesting to me. Roanoke already has a tennis community and tournament infrastructure. A professional tournament could bring players, coaches and fans into town for several days, while the same stadium could host a major concert the next night.

The original Victory Stadium was a huge part of Roanoke’s history, hosting everything from football to concerts — including a Dave Matthews Band show that reportedly drew around 30,000 people.

I’m picturing something completely different from the old stadium: smaller, modern, outdoor and designed around the experience of being there.

And it doesn’t necessarily need to be at Berglund. If there’s a better site, why not build the stadium, tennis facilities, restaurants, green space and hospitality around it from the ground up?

The point isn’t to pretend Roanoke is Queens.

It’s to ask whether Roanoke’s scale might actually be perfect for a venue that sits between an intimate amphitheater and a traditional arena.

Forest Hills made me realize that we don’t necessarily need a bigger venue.

We might just need a better one.

Now the owner of the business is begging/bribing people with a free ticket to an event for a five star review on Google... this is illegal right??

I check the County Zoning meetings for interesting things and noticed an upcoming request in the Hollins area. Someone is planning a large convenience store/gas station with additional 9,000 sq.ft. retail building behind it. This would be on Plantation beside the new Starbucks. Not sure what it is, looks big enough to maybe be a WaWa but most likely something independent.

Are the Lowes panel saws really broken, or do they just not want to break down sheets of plywood?

Hi! I know this is more of a personal request post but I have no idea who to ask. I can't get out places often due to my living situation and being disabled. I've had a deep interest in horses for a long time now, ever since I was a kid. I've wanted to be around them as it's a very big therapeutic benefit to me. Any of the once in a blue moon close encounters I've had with horses quiets down a lot of my loud thoughts and I need an excuse to actually be motivated to get outside for my treatment resistant depression.
I was wondering if anyone here has or knows anyone who owns horses and if I can maybe, once or twice a week go and interact with them on days I am able? I've always wanted to ride horses, been interested in horsemanship, etc. but that's limited until I get my leg sorted. I have a fused ankle, soon to be amputated and I don't want a fused ankle getting caught in the stirrup - it's one of many reasons I'm getting it amputated but that's an entirely different story.
I'm in a very unwalkable area of the city and can't drive (my fiance can drive me places if he has to though). I can't afford hippotherapy at Healing Strides and the ankle has gotten bad to the point where I don't think I can safely volunteer without being in pain, but I still want to interact with and provide enrichment to horses.
I can wear an ortho boot and brace to prevent twisting and injury, I promise if there's any pain it's purely just the chronic pain I face on a daily basis. I at least want to experience a little bit of equestrian work before I'm wheelchair bound for months - I had a bit of experience at school but it was just the tip of the iceberg. Stuff like lunging and mucking stalls.

I don't want to reveal too much for fear of reprisal, but has anyone recently had problems being paid on time (based on contract) by the city for services you provide to the city, even after calling and emailing staff? If so, how did you deal with it without alienating and making enemies within the city or going to court to get paid? Asking for a small, local business.

Hey everyone, this is my cat Salem. We think he escaped the house sometime late last night or early this morning. He's a very dark brown, with yellow-green eyes and a clipped left ear. He is approximately 15 years old, and has bone cancer in his hips. He's incredibly sweet and friendly, and very food-motivated. He will likely respond to his name or "Old Man". If you pick him up he'll probably make a sound like he's hurt, don't listen to him he loves being held and he's fine.

We're located in the Mountain View neighborhood, on Chapman Ave. Please keep an eye out for him and reply to this post or send me a DM if you see him. He belonged to my late wife so I am extremely attached to him, and I would be happy to offer a reward if someone can find him and bring him home safely. Thank you guys in advance!
