Stop buying sh*t and go to the dermatologist

I am a 30 year-old female. I have always had rosacea but never had a problem with acne or bumps. About a year and a half ago I developed “acne”. After so much research and going through 1 million products. I got a proper diagnosis of papulopustular rosacea. The dermatologist first prescribed just metronidazole, which did not work for me. Saw another dermatologist and they gave me the holy Grail triple cream. Has ivermectin metronidazole and Azael acid (prescription grade). Been using it for two months now and I have my old skin back. Never going to get rid of the redness, but the bumps and texture have significantly gotten better.

Hope this helps!

Weekly 'Do I have rosacea?' advice request thread. Please post here instead of making a new thread! Aug 31

If you think you might have something like rosacea and are looking for advice about whether you should seek professional care, please post your inquiry in this thread instead of creating a new post. To keep requests from crowding out other discussion in r/Rosacea, separate posts will be automatically removed and the posters directed here instead.

Rules:

  1. Please limit answers to things like, "Yup, that looks like it could be rosacea to me, maybe you should to see a doc" or "No, it looks like it could be something else."
  2. Refrain from amateur diagnoses, speculation, and armchair medical advice, especially non-rosacea related.

REMINDER: THE INTERNET IS BAD AT DIAGNOSING STUFF. Although redditors try to be helpful, only doctors can diagnose rosacea and it often takes a specialist like a dermatologist or ophthalmologist. Rosacea looks like a lot of things, and a lot of things look like rosacea; some of these things are potentially serious. It is impossible for amateurs to diagnose rosacea reliably from pictures or descriptions of symptoms, and this thread is not intended as a substitute for professional care.

No matter what response you get here, if your symptoms have been persistent and you're concerned that you might have something like rosacea, see a doctor to get a real answer.

And be sure to check out the our wiki for some rosacea knowledge basics if you're trying to figure out if you need professional medical advice.

Skincare What do you do when you have both acne and rosacea?

I can't believe I'm in my 40s(F) and still dealing with acne. I have types 1 and 2 rosacea since I was a teen. Literally decades of this, and I swear my acne is worse.

Does anyone have both, and if so, what do you use?

Which are your fav wide brim and ultra wide brim hats ?

Upvotes

I need to get a wide brim or ultra wide brim hat for the sunny weather.

Which hat do you really like that covers your face well?

I tried a couple of them but some don't cover enough, others don't really protect well against the sun. So I need a reliable SPF.

The sun is not my friend:(

What’s the current nhs wait times for dermatology like? Is it worth spending £250 for private?

I really don’t want to spend £250, but I also don’t want to keep waiting it out and not knowing how to solve my skin issues, even tho they are not severe. How long actually is the gp referall wait list, just a month or a few months or close to a year?

Does rosacea type 2 need forever maintenance such as azelaic acid or ivermectin etc or once treatment is done you just stick to a normal routine and drop those?

Hi, I was diagnosed with rosacea type 2 about 4 years ago. I have been on ivermectin before briefly, metronidazole, and then azelaic acid. My skin improved but I never managed to fully properly use azelaic acid everyday. One day I damaged my barrier 2 years ago and I stopped using it, as I was past the 6 months it said the recommended course was anyway.

Ever since my skin has been okay, still getting breakouts most weeks, not huge ones or big quantities, but still some. I also still get skin burning from time to time and itching sensations daily, despite there being nothing there sometimes.

My question is, are we supposed to keep using these prescriptions forever, or once finished we are supposed to drop it? I am wondering whether I need to go back to a dermatologist to assess or if I’m fine to just stay as I am and just cleanse, moisturise, spf.

Red marks

Has anyone found a way to stop those red marks from appearing?

They are so annoying.

It looks like a damaged skin barrier irritation but they just don't go away.

Routine Has anyone gotten closed comedones from their rosacea treatment? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Was diagnosed with Rosacea Type 2 - using azelaic acid 15% every morning, ivermectin at night, and a sulfur mask 2-3x a week at night.

Since starting this routine, I’ve noticed I’ve been getting more closed comedones only on one side of my face. The other side looks perfect….I am a side sleeper and I think I keep sleeping on the side that keeps breaking out.

Has anyone dealt with closed comedones? It has been 2.5 months of this routine and I can’t tell if it’s being caused by demodex die off.

Slide 1 is right side which is like perfect skin, slide 2 kinda hard to tell in lighting but I circled areas where I’ve now had close comedones for ~1 month (weren’t there before I started this treatment)

I know no one is a doctor and I do have a derm that I go to. But they’re not the most helpful and i feel everything is a money grab. I have a dermav laser scheduled in October, but do you think I’m a good candidate? This is my baseline redness- I just woke up here.

Rosacea? Spoiler

What do you think this could be?

I’ve been struggling with my skin for 3 years and I’m curious if anyone has experienced something similar or has any idea what it could be.

I tried doxycycline and itraconazole for around 3 months, but neither seemed to help. I then started using azelaic acid and Soolantra, and my skin is finally starting to clear up.

I’ve had redness, small bumps/pustules, texture, itching and sensitivity. My scalp and eyes have also been itchy at times.

Does this sound like rosacea/Demodex, fungal folliculitis, or something else? Would love to hear from anyone who has had similar symptoms!

The dermatologist seems to think im to young for rosacea (25) all my blood test and hormones are normal except a high feritin

Ocular Steroid eye drops and alternatives

Hi all,

I’ve had rosacea (papulopustular and ocular) for many years now.

I was on low dose doxycycline but stopped that prior to pregnancy and breastfeeding. I’m managing the facial rosacea with azelaic acid. It’s been keeping my flares to a minimum.

Ive had issues with inflammation in my eyes in the past which seemed to be triggered by the sun. This includes clogged oil glands, dryness, styes and chalazion too. I was on pretty strong steroid eye drops to treat the inflammation. Now my eyes are in a better state and I’m on a low dose steroid eye drops (FML) just to prevent any flares.

I’m not too keen on using steroid eye drops for the rest of my life. I’ve read about Manuka honey eye drops helping with inflammation, dryness etc. I was wondering if anyone had luck with using honey drops for ocular rosacea and how it went for them.

PS- I do visit the ophthalmologist but haven’t had any flares recently. I will check with them too but just wanted to see if anyone else had any luck with the Manuka honey drops

Support I have flareups when I’m home but it goes away when I travel

Hi there,

I have type 2 rosacea where I get pustules along my cheeks and forehead when I flare up.

Through out the week it can be tamed a bit but I always have at least a couple red bumps on my face at all times, so it’s never at bay but does improve through out my week.

I’ve been toying with skincare routines and my diet to see what starts my flare up. I once had clear skin up until 3 years ago so this journey has been soul sucking with no answer as to WHY this has happened or what the cause is.

I’ve noticed 2 patterns of when my flareups are the worst.

Around my period and when I get home from vacation.

I just spent a week on a roadtrip camping. I still brought my skincare and was consistent, my flare up disappeared by day 2 of my vacation. The rest of the trip my skin returned to what I was used to most of my life. No bumps, just slight redness at my cheeks.

Within 24 hours of being home, my face is a mess.

This happens every single time I go on vacation. My flareups disappear but come back when I get home.

My dermatologist doesn’t really take the time to evaluate me when I go in, she walks in, takes a look at me and goes “you have type 2 rosacea. I’m gonna write you X prescription” and hands me a triggers list and that’s my visit.

Hoping to hear from others to see if anyone else has experienced something similar or has found remedies that help?

Thank you!!!

Support Pregnancy/post partum skin Spoiler

Post image
1 Upvotes

Before falling pregnant I always had smooth even skin. During pregnancy I developed a sore, red rash on my face and unfortunately it hasn’t settled post partum. It is quite textured. I am guessing it is hormone related.
I am using minimal products and trying to focus on hydration for the skin.

Does anyone have any tips or products that may help? I have made an appointment with a dermatologist but it’s a little while away.
Thanks so much

No more rosacea

Just wanted to share that 3 months ago I was struggling so much with bad type 2 rosacea, I hardly left the house.

I have tried basically everything. Then I bought Revitale Advanced Sulphar Soap bar and Finacea 15% azeliac acid gel and 6-8 weeks later you would have no idea that I have or had rosacea.

No flushing, no pustules, no nothing. It is possible to treat!

Light/Laser Any luck or laser reccs?

Has anyone had luck with laser treatment? I have the papules (mild and not in flare now) and some small broken capillaries on the nose. Wondering if IPL is a good idea? My derm said she doesn’t weigh in on laser treatment. I’m using Azelic Acid cream and it’s been good (the Met. Cream gave me hives) but it’s not going to help with the tiny broken capillaries. Thanks in advance.

ROSACEA SUCKS The Home Remedy Worked Better & I feel swindled. [vent]

As soon as I was actually diagnosed with rosacea by a doctor, I had a prescription but it was one I had to wait for. So I did what I always do, which is I looked online for home remedies and ways to manage just in case the treatment ended up pricing me out. Apart from foods and temperatures to avoid, I found my old staple: honey. That night, I put a honey mask on, waited 20 minutes, rinsed it off with cold water, and then I used Coppertone's Pure & Simple SPF 50 sunscreen as moisturizer. That's it. Just those two.

Overnight, the bumps were going away. By the end of the following day, the weird rash of hives under my nose was gone and my skin was clear. Red, but clear, and even then it was significantly less red than when I started.

I stopped using the scented and ridiculously overpriced LANCOME Care & Glow foundation that burned when I put it on, and I switched to a tinted BB cream I found at Walgreens that cost me around $13. Redness handled.

Now onto the medications. Twice a day, I take 20mg of Doxycycline Hyclate. Then once a day, I put something called "Rositara Gel" by SKINV on my face in a thin layer, and it feels a little like a primer in terms of heaviness. The pills were almost $70 with my insurance, and the gel was just shy of $30.

To see which worked better, I stopped with the honey but continued with the sunscreen once I had my medication. I switched back to a mild cleanser (CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, the same one I'd been using since the doctor okayed it). My acne came back within a few days. Probably the worst part of my Rosacea is that in addition to it, I get this rash just above my top lip, which is actually perorial dermatitis but it appeared at the same time. I obviously got tested for an STI because it's frankly unsightly and I cannot leave the house with it. It's not ON my lip but above it, and every chapstick in the world seems to agitate it. The only thing I can use is vaseline which only works if I can wet my lips somehow first.

Did you know that women are naturally predisposed to anemia? Did you know that one way anemia presents in women is chapped lips? For the last two years, I've been watching my reflection get more haggard and just had to try to accept that because I couldn't understand why all of a sudden, every beauty product seemed to do the opposite with me. My depression got so bad, I was actively apologizing to people in my family that had to suffer my face in the family photos, which yes, made me insufferable to be around.

This journey has been fucking exhausting.

And you can imagine how frustrated I was to have seen results, immediately, with a home remedy, and then to spend three times the cost of said home remedy, backslide in progress, and get told by my doctor that "sometimes it takes up to three months to see some results." I saw results with honey within 24 hours. Honey. With sunscreen, admittedly, but honey is the shining star because honey is the thing that changed.

And when I added honey back to my routine, same result. Acne gone overnight. Redness is still there but not as bad. Is the Doxycycline Hyclate even doing anything? Is the gel? I don't fucking know. What I know is I, like most people I know, can't afford to be tossing money away on snake oil marked up by some fancy internet pharmacy, which is what this feels like.

Please don't mistake the message of this post. I'm not saying medicine doesn't work. I'm not saying anything other than the fact that I'm frustrated. "It can take up to 3 months," I'm at 3 months. Can I have my face back now? No? Okay, well how about my money, because your pills and gel aren't doing shit.

To clarify for the people with reading comprehension issues, my post is not saying don't use medicine or advertising what to use instead. I'm not a doctor. I'm not a dermatologist. I'm just someone frustrated about the prices of medicines when I'm not seeing any improvement. If that upsets you, block me and move on with your life.

Support Metronidazole Gel

My dermatologist has been useless and hasnt helped only made me more confused and upset, as i have been trying to find a cleanser that works and she keeps saying find something gentle and recommends me products that have ingredients in it that I told her I dont tolerate and i keep telling her, when i ask questions she only gives back short answers that dont even answer my questions. Its been quite distressing

My skin is very reactive, will start stinging after a few days of trying a new cleanser. Then I stop it to bring down the stinging. My face can only tolerate water and avenes recover cream, morning and night. I was diagnosed around 3 months ago with type 1 and 2, after damaging my skin barrier from trying a new Moisturiser. Pretty sure my skin barrier is still damaged as its quite sensitive and reactive.

My GP prescribed me metronidazole gel 0.75% and I was told to use it only at night for the time being. I wash my face with water, pat it dry, put on the gel wait for that to dry and then put the avene cream on over the top.

Test patch went fine, I used it on sunday night and was fine yesterday and then I used it last night and my face is stinging a bit this morning.

Should i not be using this on a damaged skin barrier? Or is this reaction normal? My GP said my symptoms can get a bit worse before they get better. I dont know if I need to stop using it or not. I cant afford to have another GP appointment right now to ask. This is all so confusing.

My face looks fine but doesn't feel it!

For those taking clonidine or propranolol for severe facial flushing — what type of doctor prescribed it?

I’m trying to find a doctor who is knowledgeable about severe flushing/possible neurogenic rosacea. My main symptoms are intense facial flushing, heat and burning,
I’ve read that some people with rosacea/flushing have been prescribed clonidine or propranolol, but I’m having trouble figuring out which type of doctor I should see for this.

The neck pimples stay for like a month!!

Morning Routine:
- just rinse face with water
- vanicream face moisturizer
- (sometimes) super goop sunscreen (I work really early and don’t see the sun til later. If I go outside later I put on sunscreen)

Night routine:
- wash with aveeno oat face calm and restore cleanser (most nights I do this, maybe once a week I’m lazy and just do a good rinse with water)
~2 times a week I will apply 10% azaelic acid (the Ordinary Brand)
-vanicream moisturizer

- randomly I will use hypochlorous spray, used to do it everyday, but now only about 3 times a week.

I wear makeup maybe once every two weeks.

Any suggestions?!
