How do you deal with headphones dying during long runs?

Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’ve only been running for about a year, and I’ve gotten used to listening to music while running. I use 1st-gen AirPods Pro, and for me, music is almost a must-have. There’s something about running while listening to the right music that gives me the feeling I’m looking for - and honestly, it’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to running.

But as my fitness improves, my distances are getting longer, which also means more time on the road.

My current AirPods last around 2.5 hours, so I’m wondering how those of you who regularly run for 3+ hours deal with your headphones.

Next year I’m planning to run my first marathon, aiming for around 4:00:00, and I already know that having music during those last 1.5 hours will be a huge part of keeping me motivated and maintaining my pace.

So how do you handle this?

  • Do you have any headphones/earbuds with really long battery life that you'd recommend?
  • Do you carry a second pair and switch them halfway through?
  • Or do you have some other solution?

I’d love to hear what works for you.

And yes, I know some people consider running without music a form of meditation, and I completely respect that. 😄 But for me, music is actually part of the meditation and relaxation - running without it just isn't the same experience.

Thanks!

using hrv and resting hr for recovery without pretending it nails every workout

I use HRV and resting HR as a recovery check, not a workout veto.

If both are off from my normal range and I also feel flat, I’ll swap intensity for easy running or take the day off. If the numbers look weird but I slept badly, traveled, had drinks, or just feel normal, I don’t assume my fitness disappeared overnight.

The useful part has been watching the trend alongside how my legs feel, mood, and recent training load. A single number is noisy. Several signs pointing the same way is usually enough to adjust.

How are other people using these without letting the app make every training decision?

Wife got into running recently, went with the Shokz Air 2. Some early thoughts

PS: Just to be clear, not an ad. Just sharing my own experience as a user, hope it helps someone out :)

My wife and I both run, mostly early mornings around our neighborhood loop. Been on the Shokz Pro 2 as my main pair for a bit over a year and they've held up nicely across everything. She's been getting into it more this fall, just easy 5Ks a few mornings a week. Air 2 came out last week and it felt like the right time to just get her a pair to run with. First morning she went out with them she came back kind of surprised. Said the vibration thing on the cheekbones takes a second to get used to but wasn't weird after the first few minutes. What she liked was not having anything shoved in her ears, since she hates the way regular buds feel especially when she's warming up and sweating a bit.

We did a slow weekend run together for the first time last Sunday, both wearing our own pairs. Being able to actually talk to each other without pulling stuff out of our ears was honestly great, and she noticed the same thing I've always liked, which is that you don't feel cut off from what's going on around you. Cars, other people on the path, dogs, all of it comes through clearly. That's kind of the whole thing with open-ear bone conduction and why we both went that route.

On sound, I've been going back and forth between hers and my Pro 2 to see how they compare. The Air 2 does come through a little thinner. My Pro 2 has that extra driver in there for bass and the Air 2 doesn't, so bassy songs feel less full. Nothing offensive, and for the podcasts and easy running playlists she listens to it's honestly perfect. She wouldn't know what she was missing since she's coming to open-ear fresh anyway.

One thing hers actually has going for it over mine is the waterproofing. She got caught in a proper downpour on one of her runs this week and hers just kept going with no fuss. I've always been a little more careful with the Pro 2 in that kind of weather so it was actually kind of nice she didn't have to think about it. Battery-wise she said her phone showed like half left after a few days of morning runs and some background listening around the house, so the 10 hours claim seems roughly accurate.

Honestly for someone new to open-ear or new to running, the Air 2 makes a lot of sense as a starting point. It's 50 bucks less than my Pro 2, sound is close enough for casual use, and if she ends up loving them and wants to upgrade later that's a decision she can make with data. For now they fit her routine and she hasn't had any reason to complain. Pretty happy with the pick overall.

Obituary for my favorite running shoes.

You were amazing. You were there when I had the thought, "8km doesn't seem like a long run anymore".. You were there for me when I reached the "10 km doesn't seem so long anymore" and you have been there for the 15km runs that sparked the thought..."Maybe a half marathon isn't impossible..."

Thank you for all of the KM's that i could have never imagined being able to run when I first started.

RIP Kinvara Pro

Do you have a route you save for days when you really don’t want to run?

Not your fastest route or the one with the best stats—just the one that makes getting out the door easier.

Maybe it has good shade, fewer intersections, a coffee shop halfway through, or one view that always helps. On low-motivation days, the route can matter more than the workout.

What makes your “I almost skipped today” route work?

Does anyone else get severely depressed when not running?

This is the first year I’ve taken running seriously where I’m doing it multiple times a week. I’ve been doing it since about August last year. I’ve upped my mileage and am making progress towards my goals.

Going out for runs has been easy and I feel like I genuinely enjoy it. Running makes me feel good (aside from my bad knees).

I’ve gotten to the point however, in trying to prevent injury, I have to take a rest day or two to preserve my knees.

On the days I don’t run, I’ve been feeling severely fucking down. I’ve never felt this in my life I swear to god. It feels like my nervous system is bombarding me with sadness lmao. I’m not usually one to wallow.

I had to run twice in one day the other day to get myself in a better mood. (8 miles in the morning, 3 miles in the evening).

I can’t stand this.

Running shoe for flat foot and plantar fischitis.

Thinking of getting a running shoe. When I ask Google it comes up with the brooks adrenaline GTS 25 would be the best choice for the type of foot I have. Anyone have any other options or shoes I should look into. I went to the store and I tried them on and they were comfortable. It just felt very awkward as right now I use barefoot shoes from xero.

Help with Shoes

I recently signed up for a half marathon. First jump from doing 5-10k's. Never owned a pair of running shoes before.

Did some research and people talked alot about the Novablast 5s and the Ghost Max series

I went with the Novablast 5s. Had them delivered to work so people didn't steal them and was excited so wore them for the whole day.

That feeling was honestly amazing and haven't had shoes that feel this good in a long time. My day to day shoes are the Under Armour Charged Surge 4.

Do yall have recommendations for day to day shoes? Is there a problem with wearing running shoes as day to day shoes?

August was probably the most useful 10 hours I’ve spent this year

Post image
1 Upvotes

Last month, I started running because a friend convinced me to give it a try.

I’ve been going to the gym for 3–4 years, so I thought, “I’m reasonably fit. How hard can running be?” 😂

Then I tried running 10K.

And reality hit me pretty quickly.

Gym strength ≠ running endurance.

I could lift weights, but apparently my legs didn’t get the memo that they were supposed to run for 10 kilometers. 😭

I started learning about pacing, recovery, Zone 2, endurance training, and why you can’t just brute-force every run like a gym workout.

I’m still a complete beginner, but that’s actually what I’m enjoying about it.

According to my running stats, August ended with:
🏃 13 runs
⏱️** 10h 46m
📍 **72 km

⛰️** 367m elevation gai**n

And honestly, those 10+ hours might be the most useful 10 hours I’ve spent this year.

Not because I became a great runner.
But because I started something I was genuinely bad at, humbled myself, and began learning from zero again.

August was basically: “Bro, you’re not as fit as you thought.” 😂

Here’s to September and hopefully a little less suffering. 🏃‍♂️

Sub 45min 10K

Hey guys, I’ll be running a 10k race in approx 4 weeks and would love to hit 45mins if possible.
My best 5k time this year was a 22:20 3 weeks ago, have been following a runna plan with one interval, one easy and one long run per week, and managed 4x1km intervals today at 4:20-4:25/km.
Is a sub 45 doable, and any advice on a good pacing strategy? Thank you!

What made running stop being something you had to talk yourself into?

I've been running about four months, usually two or three times a week, and I'm at the point where a 5k doesn't wreck me anymore. The fitness side is fine, the problem is that every single run still starts with me standing in the hallway negotiating with myself for ten minutes. I keep waiting for the part everyone describes where you just want to go, and it hasn't shown up yet.

What made running stop being something you had to talk yourself into?

Running during Luteal phase

Hey fam,
24-year-old female runner here!
Thanks to my Garmin and Strava, I’ve been able to see some pretty crazy patterns in my running. Every week before my period (during the luteal phase), I struggle to produce good runs. Even crazier, every single PR in my record book has been set on the last day of my period.

I’ve always hated the ads and influencers who say, “Train for your cycle,” because I feel like they’re always pushing people to do less. I have to admit, though, my cycle seems to have a pretty significant impact on my performance.

This makes me wonder about professional athletes and whether their races are affected by their menstrual cycles. I have an 18-mile race scheduled for the week before my period, and I’m worried I won’t perform my best because of it. How do professional athletes handle this?

Lacing with 2 extra eyes

Post image
1 Upvotes

First time for me adding saucony's into my shoe rotation, wanted to do the regular runnersloop however the extra hole is giving me some headaches.

I hope some of you are smarter than me 😅

Any help is highly appreciated ❤️

I tried to find anything online. But the results so far have been dominated by the normal loop with just one extra eye. And also Sauconys customer support will only answer in about 8 days.
