A Common Effort for a Taxonomy (v0.5)

Hello,

So, I've been thinking for a while about all that, practicing a lot, and so that we have better communication tools. Obviously, I'm far from being the Master Screamer, so, this is a collective effort. Feel free to suggest additions or corrections.

I'll try to name things without making any hypothesis about their anatomical production. The rationale for that is that we can't make mistakes just naming things. And we won't need to change our names, ever. Though, for adoption, we can't disregard our legacy.

Again, I'm not trying to describe things, I'm trying to propose some vocabulary. It also implies redefining some terms the community uses by trying to get a fixed and common definition, hopefully not too far from what has been established so far.

False cords screams (previously "false cords screams")

Let's call by that names screams that are toneless, have very little clean voice in them, and have this heavy "vibrating" distortion.

Examples:

Then there are fuckton of possible modulations that are already well established, including but not limited to: tunnel throat etc.

False cords rasp (previously "rasp / grit")

This has the same heavy vibration tone as the associated scream, but with a clean tone under it.

Examples:

Fry distortion (previously "rasp / grit")

This applies more on high notes, sounds more like a creaky grit.

Examples:

Grudge scream (previously "fry scream")

Very creaky screams, probably high, probably not sounding chesty. They sound like a powered up vocal fry (grudge noise). I'm very skeptical that those screams can be made powerful and loud.

Voicy Scream (previously "fry scream")

They sound like the voice is tight in the throat so much that it gets distorted. The distortion is predominant, the voice sounds a bit hollow.

Examples:

.======

That's what I have so far. We still need to talk about Sam Carter, when Oli Sykes sings, etc. I'll edit that post as we make progress

Please please please voice any opinion or disagreement you might have, complement that list, etc. Only that will make science go forward. I tried to illustrate that with known artists, but I might be wrong.

Please help me! any advice is amazing!

I know this has probably been asked before but please any advice would genuinly make my world at the moment.

So some context. I am a trained singer and been professional for many many years, joined a band as a vocalist and overtime its become heavier and heavier and we decided we should add screams.

I have been watching every single video, asking professionals there advice, and for a brief period of time (in which we recorded our ep) i had a lovely Hardcore Yell type vocal and it didnt hurt at all and was sick.

Ive completely lost it. I dont know what im doing differently but now i cant replicate it or get even close without my voice hurting. I am going on tour in a month and cannot scream my own songs. I have no idea what to do and im watching all these tutorials but i cant figure out how i did it before and everything is so stressful and im just damaging my voice trying to replicate smth that used to be so effortless.

For context im 20yr Female, dont smoke or drink, drinks lots of water and overall has alright breathing techniques.

VOCALS WITH DETURES

I'm wondering if anyone in the sub has gone through this. Just had my surgery and am trying to talk so I figured if there's advice about getting back to singing and screaming it'd be avaliable in here. If anyone has advice, it'd be appreciated

I wanna hear your advices on my false chord. I know I’ve got got problems with running out of air and articulation and I’m working on it but I wanna make sure my technique is “correct” and I’m not killing my voice

Playing with your voice >>>> watching 500 tutorials saying the same thing. Abandon expectations; GO STUPID RIGHT NOW

Lessons learned/TLDR (context below):

Forget about vocal fry. Well, it's mildly useful but focusing so much on it gave me such a bad habit of falling into it and squeezing out my voice when trying to push; it was counterproductive. It's a texture that should be added on after the fact, not a foundation.

So many screams that people call 'fry screams' are using false cord distortion; I learned this thanks to Chris Liepe, amongst a few other people. Learning this changed my whole perspective on how I should approach it. Really there's not a whole lot of difference between "fry screams" and "false cord screams" in terms of anatomy; it's more so airflow/compression.

Trying to start with distortion and work the voice into it didn't really work well for me; I found starting with the voice and working distortion into it was more effective. This ofc comes with its own issues of overprojection, but that can be worked on after the fact.

Biggest shout out to Mark from Kardavox for his videos talking about being playful with your voice and abandoning 'singer brain' and perfectionism; make silly noises and work them into something usable. Even if you do the 'proper technique', it won't sound that good anyways when you're a beginner. Forget about sounding good and focus on sensation instead.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

God damn it they were right. I'm very much a beginner but could do really basic false cord mids/lows; I wanted to start learning to do high screams but couldn't figure out how to add it to my head voice. I want to be able to do high screams that many people call 'fry screaming', think pitched/hybrid screaming, but I couldn't even get to step 1 because no tutorials on them were working for me. Vocal fry was pretty much useless and I couldn't compress correctly in a way that wasn't immediately painful.

I was finally able to do it when one night I just let go of any expectations and pushed the shit out of my head voice; at first it was almost all air (because of tension + psychological barrier) but I felt a rattle so I kept doing it more and more while trying to keep my voice in and suddenly I unlocked it. Then I played around with that sensation for a couple days, trying to compress that and finally got something workable.

There was some strain because I was pushing my voice so high, and the usual discomfort/mild pain from false cords but nothing out of the ordinary. It also sounds really stupid, like a dying crow because I have to add quite a bit of twang to get the distortion, but now I have something to work with instead of just being stuck! The distortion itself feels like exactly what I'm looking for; false cord with some crackle in it. Now I just need to figure out how to maintain that feeling with less twang and 'screechyness'.

Ironically that gave me more control over my false cords so now I have better control my false cords in my chest voice too; whereas before I was basically just pushing air to activate them, I was able to find a Kargyraa-like 'middle point' while playing around with compression.

Moral of the story: get a little silly with it!

r/screaming 11h ago

How to fix my false chord? I can do kargyraa but it's not as deep as it is, and it's airy, which would make me lose air quickly. Any tips?

What’s going on here? Is it a compression issue? Placement? Air? I’m not entirely sure.

Hello! I am an artist who for a while has made hip hop and rnb. I’ve always loved alternative, metal, punk, and hard rock- and I’ve decided to make the pivot to a more rock and alternative lane.

I’ve scoured the internet for tutorials on how to fry scream. At this point I’m top of my class at YouTube university. I’ve been practicing ~3 months now. I’m definitely proud of the progress I’ve made, but I still struggle with projection. I also notice my screams are very crackly, as opposed to a sustained scream.

The videos attached are an example of my screaming from today, and a clip from about 2months ago, with some compression and slight distortion added.

I have a show coming up in ~2 weeks, and I would love any feedback or tips before I make a fool of myself on stage😭

EDIT: idk why the two clips are now one video

Needing Advice (False Chords)

I’m not entirely new to growling or screaming, but as of recent I’ve been trying to lock in and get better specifically for deathcore/metalcore. My main questions are how can I project the most with the least amount of air, and how can I polish my highs/high mids.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, all screams here are false chords.

I'm mostly confident in my raw screams but only recently I've felt like I'm managing to make them sound good in recordings. Thoughts / advice?

Hi y'all. I'm a beginner-ish screamer. I practice mostly in my car on the way to and from work. I try to follow the Chris Liepe philosophy of putting aside my inner critic so that I can just make sounds and see where my voice takes me. This has been helpful, BUT... I sometimes get stuck wondering what the heck it is I am doing.

What technique/mechanism does it sound like I'm using here? Does anything stand out as unhealthy? How can it be channeled into something more usable?
