Needing Advice (False Chords)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m not entirely new to growling or screaming, but as of recent I’ve been trying to lock in and get better specifically for deathcore/metalcore. My main questions are how can I project the most with the least amount of air, and how can I polish my highs/high mids.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, all screams here are false chords.

First start - It's also false cord, with no H.

Technique correction - I'd suggest less air with more control. You're bursting air to be loud. The key isn't to be loud, it's to be resonant. The microphone will be less than a few inches from your face, you want them to hear you, not the air bursting into the microphone.

Technique improvements - Kargyraa is a tuvan throat method is a great method for practicing muscle control for false cord. Khoomei is the great technique that uses a separate tissues that have a higher frequency of vibration than Kargyraa and this muscle control is used to engage the right muscles for fry screaming and hybrid fry/false cord lows and / or mids.

Everything from there is about air turbulence/velocity, vowel shaping, and using the right chambers/anatomy for your voice to alter resonance, pitch, and timber. You could drop your larynx and extend your lips, turn your head, or whatever to elongate your vocal tract, You could tip your head back and open your mouth wide or route your sound thru the sinus cavities... there's endless options in this space to make your own unique sounds. Although uniqueness is quite scarce these days. There's quite a few new unique techniques out there.

Sicinthemind gave some good info. You were getting the false cord distortion already practicing ABCs and vowels can help you find control. Some false chord screams are pretty loud, but it's not a necessity. it's already been mentioned but let the mic do the work.

For getting the high notes use eee and yaaa sounds when you do your words. Your first high scream sounded a little too airy. You don't want to squeeze so much that you choke off all the air flow but you do constrict more on highs

When I first started I would practice eee yaahhs and that's how I found my base for my high-pitched screams. And once you have the base high scream. you could get nasally with it to push it higher.

One of my favorite ways to do high screams. If you remove the distortion from my voice, sounds like I'm trying to imitate Elmo or a cartoon. Experiment with making different funny voices and then adding false cord distortion on top. You can get some pretty cool screams that way.

For deathcore you also don't want to always try to enunciate the word perfectly. Sometimes you have to be a little sloppy with your pronunciation on purpose

Also, visualization plays a pretty big part I don't know the anatomical reasons for this part, but visualizing the sound in your head can make a noticeable difference
