Motivation An advice from a 30 year old dude

So this subreddit keeps appearing on my feed, probably because I’m a short man at 166 cm who follows men’s fashion pages and similar content.

Honestly, if I had found this side of the internet before I started dating in the real world, I probably would have stayed a virgin. According to some of the people here, I should be completely doomed anyway. I’m short, bald, and I have crooked teeth.

And yet I have dated women of different heights, including women taller than me.

I’m also a university lecturer, and I read a lot of research on dating, mate preferences, and social status. So here is the scientific version, not the black pill fantasy version.

Yes, height matters. Preferences are real. Women, like men, can have physical preferences, and pretending otherwise is stupid. But research does not support the idea that one trait like height determines your entire dating future. Actual partner choice is shaped by multiple factors at once, including kindness, intelligence, emotional stability, dependability, confidence, physical attraction, and social or economic stability (Buss & Schmitt, 2019; Thomas et al., 2020).

Research also shows that what people say they want does not perfectly predict who they actually choose when interacting in real life. In speed dating studies, stated preferences often did not line up neatly with actual attraction once people met face to face (Eastwick & Finkel, 2008). In other words, attraction in the real world is messier and more human than internet forums want to admit.

Online spaces and dating apps also distort reality. They push people to judge each other quickly and superficially, which exaggerates traits like height. That does not mean the entire dating market works that way offline (Finkel et al., 2012).

To quote my therapist, life is basically a big Souls game and height is just a debuff. Yes, it can make things harder. Yes, you will probably get your ass kicked a few more times than someone playing on easier settings. But that does not mean the game is unwinnable. It just means you may need more patience, more resilience, and a better strategy. And honestly, where is the fun in beating the game with no debuffs?

I have been rejected plenty of times, and height probably played a role in some of those rejections. I say probably because I do not interrogate rejection or obsess over the reason. I am not going to ask someone to explain why they did not want me. That is their choice. Other people are allowed to have preferences, and I do not need to internalise every rejection as a verdict on my worth. At the end of the day, only you get to decide your value in this world.

I have also been through a period of height insecurity myself. After a recent rejection, I went down the rabbit hole of self loathing, so I do understand how dark that headspace can get. But how we feel is not always a perfect reflection of reality. Feelings, emotions, and thought patterns can spiral, and they can also be challenged and changed. Therapy helped me see that. With the right support, self awareness, and work, the way you think about yourself can improve.

What these spaces often ignore is how much insecurity changes the way a person comes across. Neediness, resentment, bitterness, and defeatism are not attractive qualities, and they can do more damage than being a few inches below average.

That is why the advice to men should not be “give up.” It should be “build a life that makes you attractive in a broader sense.” Work on your confidence. Go to therapy if you need it. Practice mindfulness. Focus on your career, not because women are gold diggers, but because ambition, competence, and financial stability signal drive and maturity. Take care of your physical health. Read more. Volunteer. Join communities. Get involved in causes you genuinely care about. Expand your social circles and meet women in real spaces, not just through algorithms and rage bait.

And if you are constantly hitting a wall, take a break from dating for a bit. Reset. Rebuild your confidence. Get your head straight. Stop treating every bad experience like proof that the whole world works one way.

Most importantly, women are not a hive mind. One woman rejecting you does not mean all women think the same. A subreddit full of bitter men is not an accurate sample of reality. People have different preferences, different priorities, and different reasons for being attracted to someone.

Also, be careful with research in general. Research can help us identify trends, but human beings are more complex than a dataset or a single paper. Averages are not destiny, context matters, and how old the research is matters too. Social norms, dating culture, and the way people meet have changed a lot over time, especially with apps and social media. So use research to inform your thinking, not to reduce yourself or other people to a rigid formula.

The point is simple. Height can be a disadvantage. It is not a death sentence. A lot of men are not being ruined by height alone. They are being ruined by an identity built around insecurity, hopelessness, and too much time spent listening to other defeated men online.

Meta Suggestions

Ok, I'm stuck at my desk with a bum foot that's been plaguing me for weeks now, so I might as well try to make this time at least a bit productive.

So since I ain't going anywhere, let's have a meta discussion about the sub, and I'll take this opportunity to solicit suggestions.

It looks so damn easy when you watch other people do it on videos.

Spoiler: it's not 💀

Being short actually makes most calisthenics excersises a bit easier tho. One of the few perks I guess 😆

Question Is being confident as a short man even interpreted the same way as being confident as a taller man.

I mean this question in the best possible faith.

People seem to assume that you’re compensating for height when you’re shorter. I’ve seen this countless times on the internet, where a short man does everything right (gym, confidence, haircut, fashion, whatever) and is still ripped to shreds in comment sections.

People will call these guys “m**gets**”, “m****lets”, and every other derogatory slur in the book. People will also leave comments on how these guys are only doing this because they’re “tiny”. These types of comments are very common on other platforms like instagram, tiktok, twitter, and Facebook. It still happens on YouTube, but to a much lesser degree. Reddit however seems to completely invalidate my observations, telling me that “its all in my head” and I need to “improve” by being “confident” or whatever that means.

My question is: how are you supposed to even be confident when people are always shitting on you? People always seem to view you as lesser, no matter what you do.

Meanwhile taller and above average people seem to experience completely different realities. They’re celebrated instead of ridiculed when they exhibit confidence or any other type of personal behavior. They just get to exist and are treated like humans.

I need to touch grass (Possibly) hot take about confidence

Something I’ve realized which is hard to navigate is the fact that
A short man’s confidence gets often misinterpeted as having a massive ego
A tall man’s confidence rarely ever gets misinterpeted as having an ego

So whenever I get too confident in myself, i forcefully push down my confidence in the fear that I’m seen as the “Short man with a big ego”

Vent "You can't control it".

I'm so done with the advice that "You can't control your height, but you can control how you handle it". Actually, I'm done with that advice as a whole. People are allowed to feel bad about things, whether it's about something they can control or not. I'd much rather someone vent about their bad feelings than have them bottle it up until they explode.

So basically my teacher was talking about natural selection and she pointed to the tall guy in my class he was about 6’1-6’2 and she said that he would survive natural selection.
Out of nowhere she shouts my name and says i would die because my genes aren’t strong enough. Everyone laughed and i just stayed silent i have no idea why this is normalised.

Dating Dateless.

For context I’m 21 (male) about 5’1. I grew up basically in hospital because I was born ill. Long story short. Had chronic kidney disease and from 9 till 10 had dialysis and then I had a kidney transplant. My height was affected. All day I feel lonely or sad. Whilst a lot of other people have someone besides them. I have…no one. I’m Asian (from Pakistan but born and raised in England so I guess I feel more English) I do want to date but i don’t think I’ll ever actually get the chance to or at least that’s how it feels. Despite me being a good person and kind. I don’t know if it’ll ever happen. I am happy for other people in relationships. I just wish that I could be one of them. Do you guys have any advice I could use for dating or anything?

Vent TDEE and Calorie Intake at 5’2”

I’m sure many of the fitness minded folks can attest, but I really hate how low my TDEE is, and how low it goes during a cut. As 5’2” man lifting hard 5 days a week and cranking out 30-45mins on the cardio bike most days, I’m still limited to ~1500kcal or less per day to maintain pace. And the leaner I get, the more the ceiling drops.

Its immensely frustrating to see taller peers in similar deficits hutting up chipotle post-workout and still staying on plan, while I end up digging deep into the volumeeating diet hacks to keep going.

I’ve been doing this long enough to navigate, and I’m not looking for advice, just one of the aspects of being a smaller person that taller folks don’t typically deal with to the same degree.

Its of course balanced, I bulk easier and all, but man do I hate dieting down with how restrictive it ends up feeling.

Getting down from my soapbox stepladder now.

Heightism Check your workplace policies for this

Your workplace policies prohibit gendered stereotypes.

What does this include?

Examples: Red haired women get angry easily. Blonde women are ditzy.

Even when someone is angry or anything, we do not use these phrases. They are gendered stereotypes.

And so is "short man's syndrome" and "Napoleon Complex"

These are expectations of male behavior and value that women are not subjected to in the same way.

They are gendered stereotypes. And they are disgusting. When you hear them, you can report them.

You will be reporting a violation of rules that is a gender one. You are protected by law against retaliation, meaning you can sue your employer if they do something to you for complaining.

Let's put a stop to the stereotypes and tropes.

Heightism Back in high school, my vice principal constantly made fun of my height

So my whole life I was the shortest kid in my grade every year. I was kinda used to being the butt of the joke, but I always owned my shortness and throughout my childhood and early teen years I gained a pretty thick skin for rude comments. My parents always uplifted me and made sure I knew I wasn’t lesser than anyone else because of it; I’m grateful they instilled that self-confidence in me.
A few years ago I found out I actually have a rare type of dwarfism that explained a lot. Learning this info has made me revisit a lot of old memories of some mistreatment I experienced and I see it through a new lens. I wonder if I knew of my condition earlier, would people have been more or less likely to ridicule me?

I went to high school from 2007-2010.
My vice principal was a widely loved, goofy and friendly guy. He was very involved in sports too. (I was not sporty at all for the record, I was a theatre geek lol)
In my first semester of high school I made honour roll and attended a ceremony where we got certificates. There were at least a couple hundred people in the theatre. As I walked across the stage, my VP who was giving out the awards introduced me by joking about my height: “here she is folks, our super basketball star 6’4, (my name here)!!” I was shocked and for a split second thought maybe he had called the wrong name, and then realized he was actually just making fun of me in front of hundreds of people. I think I remember my mom asking me if I was okay afterward but my memory is foggy.
That then became a bit of a taunt he did to me whenever I ran into him in the hallway at school. He’d announce like “there she is, basketball superstar, 6’4”, future captain of the (insert locally well known for their athletics college here)!”

At the time I kind of let it roll off my back because I honestly was used to being made fun of for my height and I was secure in that part of myself. Looking back on it now, it’s kind of really messed up that he was picking on me like that. I see this in a different way now, I’m angry that an adult I was supposed to trust took such delight in this behaviour. And yes I’m processing this shit in therapy now lol.

On graduation day, in front of a stadium full of thousands of people, he introduced me like this: “and here she is, proof that good things come in small packages, (my name here), surprisingly she won’t be going to (local jocky university) to join their basketball team but will instead be studying philosophy at (actual college I went to)!”

I was SO embarrassed this time. In front of soooo many people he made fun of my height. F that guy, I wish I’d told him off back in the day.

Fashion / Style When does shoe height become absurd?

165cm (5’5) guy here. I wear sneakers that add 5cm (~2 inches) of height. So I‘m 170cm (5’7) in shoes. When I take off my shoes, no one seems to care about the height drop.

I also happen to be in the alternative space in fashion. Things like boots, creepers, and platform shoes are quite standard in this space. It’s quite normal for one of these types of footwear to add 10cm (4 inches) of height. So, I’d go from 165cm barefoot to 175cm (5’9) in these shoes.

Is that absurd? Or acceptable? And what’s the cutoff where it goes from normal to absurd?

Heightism 5 7' my experience

I'm 5'7". I know that's not extremely short, and objectively I'm aware that there are plenty of guys around my height or shorter. But I've been made fun of for my height for a long time, and I've realised recently that it has affected my confidence much more than I like to admit.

It started way before college. Height jokes have been a recurring thing for me for years — the usual comments, comparisons, people pointing it out, making me the short guy in the group, etc. You laugh along because what else are you supposed to do? But when you hear something often enough, eventually you start internalising it.

College made it worse.

I'm in a college environment where a lot of the guys around me are 6'0"+. When you're standing next to someone who's 6'2" or 6'3", suddenly 5'7" doesn't just feel like an ordinary height difference. You become very conscious of it. Photos, groups, meeting new people, talking to girls — there's always this little voice in the back of your head going, "They're taller than you."

And the frustrating part is that I don't even want to care this much.

I've been trying to focus on things I can actually control. I go to the gym, I'm trying to become more athletic, I run, play sports, and I'm interested in picking up things like boxing/calisthenics or another skill. I'm trying to build myself into someone I'm genuinely proud of rather than obsessing over one measurement I can't change.

But insecurity isn't always rational.

Sometimes I can have a genuinely good day, feel confident, and then one stupid height joke can completely bring that feeling back. And because height is so visible, it can feel like something you can never escape from.

I also don't know how much of this is actually coming from other people anymore and how much is coming from my own head. Maybe people aren't thinking about my height nearly as much as I think they are. Maybe I'm still carrying around jokes from years ago and interpreting everything through that lens.

So I'm curious about other guys around 5'6"-5'8", especially those who went through college surrounded by taller guys:

Did being shorter actually affect your dating/social life as much as you feared it would, or did you eventually realise that you were giving your height way more importance than everyone else was?

And if you used to be insecure about it, what actually helped you get over it?
