マエスマ'GRAND WARS#3 / Maesuma'GRAND WARS#3 | Aug 30th | Osaka, Japan

Maesuma Grand Wars is back with its 3rd entry for yet another SuperMajor level event!! This is also Acola’s first ranked event since regaining his crown as number 1 in the world, ready to show us that title was well earned. Others are looking to challenge this notion though, with Hurt and Miya ready to put up a damn good fight. Even outside of the top 3 contenders, several of Japan’s best talents have shown up ready to give it their all. And as we all know all too well, when JP depth is in the building, anything can happen.

All I noted every time, a Smash Character has jumped up or dropped down a Tier List significantly when transitioning the game.

When I described it badly, let me use an example:

Image 1: Kirby was insanely dominant in Smash 64, being ranked 2nd on the last Tier List of the Game. By the transition to Melee, Kirby was nerfed severly and ended up being ranked 25th out of 26th. An almost 80% dropoff.

Image 3: In Brawl, Mario was considered dogshit and ranked 31th out of 38. In Smash 4 however, he rosed up into Place 9 out of 54. An almost 65% increase!

(I also was generous to R.O.B. and Mewtwo because they had a 58% increase despite and counted them aswell)

Other Puff should never be cut in smash 6 or future Smash Titles and I have Definitive reasons.

Post image
69 Upvotes

Jigglypuff time and time again has been on the chopping block and seen as expendable during fan rosters and speculations on who will return for Smash 6. I have been getting sick of this Puff Slander so I'm here to defend her.

I'm gonna break these down into points on why Puff is a permanent member and counter arguments for the main reasons why people think Puff is expendable.

  1. "She was almost Cut in Brawl"

This is the biggest reason why people think Puff is on the chopping block and looking back, yeah I could see it but the thing with that Is.... She wasn't. Plain and simple, The final product is ultimately what matters, It's what cemented her legacy and status as a permanent member, the forbidden seven were also planned but never made the final cut but Puff by all odds got added in last minute.

Brawl is an 18 Year Old Game and opinions can change, Puff didn't debut her viability in Melee til 2007-2009 where Mango and Hungry box Cemented her Viability in the game before those two she was just seen as mid tier joke character and didn't have her iconic melee status til during and after Brawl's Production.

  1. She's not a legacy character or relevant

This is probably the 2nd biggest argument for why she should get cut. People seem to hold a high degree to all member's of the original 12 besides Puff, They defend Captain Falcon and Ness saying they represent their series who's games haven't been relevant in years but because their games are a big piece of Nintendo History they get a pass. Jigglypuff who is a member of the Original 12 that in of itself is a piece of Nintendo History and Is a double standard when seen as not as Smash 64 was the game that started it all, It should matter because without it we wouldn't have Smash in the first place.

  1. Too Many Gen 1 Pokemon/ Too many Pokemon

Some Argue Pokemon gets too much representation or too much Gen 1 Pokemon representation. I have an counter argument for both

Too much Gen 1 Pokemon: People use this argument at times to cut Puff and Keep Pokemon Trainer or Mewtwo saying both are too iconic to cut but lets go back and see the History of Gen 1 Pokemon in Smash. Mewtwo debuted in Melee and got cut in Brawl and got cut from the base roster again Smash 4 to get added as DLC later on. Pokemon Trainer alongside Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard debuted in Brawl and Squirtle and Ivysaur got cut in Smash 4 due to hardware limitations with the 3DS while Jigglypuff remained as a part of the Base Roster in Smash 4. Squirtle and Ivysaur could have been implemented as separate characters like Charizard in smash 4 but were deemed unimportant enough to just get cut entirely, time and time again we see Puff being prioritized over more popular Gen 1 Pokemon like Mewtwo, Squirtle and Ivysaur.

I'm not saying Puff is more popular or iconic than Squirtle or Mewtwo but history proves she gets prioritized over them. This is another double standard since people constantly weaponize her "Almost" getting cut in Brawl and use it as ammo but we see who gets cut in the final product but that fact doesn't matter apparently... it falls on deaf ears.

Too many Pokemon: This point is more rare than too many gen 1 Pokemon but I'm covering it anyway. This point is often treated like the too many fire emblem argument and its a weak point as Pokemon is one of the biggest franchises in the world it deserves its roster size in Smash especially since Pokemon is partly owned by Nintendo who Smash is a first and foremost a celebration of Nintendo more than it is a celebration of gaming, both are important to Smash.

If you look at all the fan roster's Roy, Chrom and Lucina are usually the first to get cut in the fire emblem roster because they play similar to Marth and need more diversity its why Ike, Robin and Byleth usually are safe from getting cut because they play differently. Puff fundementally plays differently than any Pokemon in Smash hell none of the Pokemon with the exception of Pichu play the same as any other Pokemon.

This last point brings me into my next counterargument

  1. Puff has a Unique Archetype

Getting rid of Puff means getting rid of a unique play style and archetype no other character can fill, Puff plays differently that any other character in the roster and is the floatiest and lightest character in the game. People often compare her to Kirby because both are floaty pink puffballs but they both play fundamentally different, Kirby is a more grounded fighter who shares the same amount of jumps as Jigglypuff but isn't nearly as Floaty while Puff is an Ariel dominant high risk high reward character with amazing Ariel drift. Puff also has her iconic rest and sing combos that can reward risky plays and generate massive amounts of hype around her playstyle.

  1. Jigglypuff can be modernized

If you want more newer representation of Pokemon for Smash give her a Scream Tail costume you can get the best of both worlds. Puff still gets represented as an OG 12 while having a modern twist for the newer generations everyone wins.

Give her an updated moveset: Give her a fairy type move and change around moves like rollout, I cant imagine getting rid of rest, sing or pound. Just give her something more to work with so she gets an update and isn't stuck in low tier.

Overall I think Puff has earned her place in the roster for the foreseeable future I hope these points I made changed some peoples point of view on Jigglypuff.

Hi, I’ve been playing *Super Smash Bros. Ultimate* competitively for about a year with some friends. They tease me, saying I ought to win every match when playing as Lucas against Cloud or Sephiroth.
Do you think that’s true, or are they just saying it because they lose?

All I split the entire series into "eras"

I already made this post before, but after receiving some feedback, I decided it required to be remade from scratch

The Smash series has enough installments and plenty of hacks...and as time went on...the series changed in a lot of aspect...even if it still kept a pretty similar foundation.

The question is...when did the biggest shifts took place?

*Classic Era*

The first era is what I would like to call the foundation era...this is where the main goal of the dev team was getting the game done...even if by any means necessary.

Smash 64, Melee and Brawl are games where content was cut mainly because of time constraints. Bowser, Dedede, Mewtwo and Marth never got to appear officially in Smash 64 but they were planned. Melee has a lot of cuts and the most notable one was Wario. Brawl had the infamous forbidden seven, obviously planned but cut.

This means that the development cycles of these games were always...rocky...and not only were some ideas on the design document never conceived properly...but some ideas were made on the fly...adding further chaos.

The secret characters in Smash 64, the clones in Melee and also Sonic, Wolf, Toon Link and Jigglypuff in Brawl, all of those examples were made on the fly...with mixed results...now...Brawl was almost the most modest case.

Should Sonic not have been given green light by Sega...Brawl would not have been delayed...thus...the other 3 Brawl examples I mentioned wouldn't have time to get in...so Brawl ALMOST had a perfect dev cycle.

Then why is Brawl the way it is? Not only in terms of balance, but some characters don't work well in the transition from Melee to Brawl. Half of all the dev time went into Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emmisary.

For Subspace Emmissary, every fighter has a different set of parameters than those of the rest of the game.

That's how you make the platforming work regardless of the character. But it came with a challenge. Sakurai didn't have anyone in charge of the adventure, so he had to take care of it as well as the rest of the game, and that was important, because the parameters makes it so Brawl essentially doubled it's roster (78 instead of 39).

Now we know why Brawl was one of the most polished yet also one of the least play tested games, because they essentially worked on two games inside of one, and that explains why we never saw something like it since then.

*Middle Era*

In between Brawl and Smash 4, we got a ton of Smash hacks from Brawl. This was exactly what Brawl needed to be revitalized at a time where some players went back to Melee and a new Smash game wasn't on the horizon yet.

I hesitate to call this an era though, because it was rather short-lived. The biggest hack back then was Project M, but before Smash 4 got announced, Nintendo C&D the project, and with that, the hacking scene wasn't the same

Brawl hacks ended up existing but they were not as mainstream as they once were thanks to Project M, and Smash 4's release put the spotlight away from the hacking scene. Speaking of Smash 4...the next era.

*Modern Era*

This era had a key component for it's making...Bandai Namco Studios. They became the developers of Smash from now on, and with that, their influence changed the games, adding some stuff we previously didn't consider.

The biggest one has to be post-launch support. No longer were time constraints a reason to not see content or have content not properly tested. Now, any mistake the game had or would have later could be patched.

Mewtwo and Lucas in Smash 4 were key examples of this. Both were intended for Smash 4's base-game (their models are in the thropies even before they got added, and Mewtwo got some remnants of Custom moves that would be later removed, and Custom Moves are reserved for base-game fighters) but probably because of time constraints, they were not added. But unlike Brawl and the forbidden seven, Smash 4 recovered their initial cuts.

That's the magic of DLC and updates...the game keeps on growing even after the initial release. And Ultimate had some of those examples as well. Pirahna Plant I think was meant to be base-game (even has a guidance).

Much like Mewtwo, Pirahna Plant was the first DLC added as a result. There's another example, being Min Min and Pyra/Mythra, which both suffered from their games being released too late to be considered before.

In the classic era, we had cases like Roy which was added to Melee before his game was even out, and also cases like Sonic that forced the game to be delayed for the inclusion. Neither of these cases was probably even in the original design document and were instead decided on the fly. But in the modern era, that's no more.

If something didn't get in before, we stick to the original design document and not make ideas on the fly yet.

After all, those who didn't make it in because of time could make it in as DLC. Which is exactly what happened with Min Min and Pyra/Mythra. With that, dev cycles leading to the initial release stopped being rocky ones.

*Homage Era*

This is the middle era but it came with a vengeance. Shortly after Ultimate, the hacking scene grew exponentially. The two projects that kickstarted the growth were Smash Remix and Project Slippi.

We also got Project +, but it didn't have the same impact as Project M. Smash Remix meanwhile got so big that the original announcer of Smash 64 is in it and Project Slippi is undeniably THE way to play Melee nowdays.

*Revolution Era*

This is an extension of the homage era, and the protagonists are mods that are in constant growth even today. Smash Remix got two, being Project Galleon and +Extra. Then Project Rex as the definitive Brawl mod.

And here's a curve ball...Project Akaneia for Melee, despite being rather barebones compared to the other examples, is also part of this era, as it's the most promising mod Melee had in quite a long time.

As cool as Smash Remix and Slippi were, their developments pretty much concluded. This is why the revolution era focuses on mods that are meant to follow the legacy of other mods as well as official games.

*Rebirth Era*

This is my take on an era after Ultimate. With all the mods available, the traditional formula got squeezed as far as it could go, and with Ultimate leaving the bar too high, maybe the next Smash game will surprise us.

Anyways, what do you think? Let me your thoughts below

Other What do yall think of Super Smash Bros Crusade now

Post image

I tried searching for opinions on this game but most are a little dated, and I feel like Crusade has come to a really fun spot. I like its characters and their reworks (Other than Pacman please give an option to play ultimate Pacman just like many other legacy characters) and I like the physics system inspired by Ultimate, I just wish the game was a little more floaty like SSF2 is, but it's a minor nitpick and it's all I've been

Im just interested to see what you guys think

Ultimate A to B+ Tier: Best-Designed?

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I watched a video by MockRockTalk arguing that the best-designed characters in Ultimate are Wolf, Pokemon Trainer, Roy, Rosalina, Incineroar, Donkey Kong, King K. Rool, Mega Man, Sheik, and Ice Climbers. I think the video made some good arguments and I recommend giving it a watch, but it stood out to me that of those 10 characters, 7 are in A tier or B+ tier on the current tier list (the only exceptions are K. Rool, Incineroar, and Sheik, and Sheik is only a few spots below B+).

I feel like there is a certain degree of strength that makes fighters more engaging to watch and play. It's the right level that makes matches snappy and entertaining. Which can be ruined if a fighter is too strong or too weak.

If a fighter can do tons of damage or outright kill you too easily with the same options like Steve, Game & Watch, Min Min, Kazuya, or Luigi, it just becomes predictable and unfair rather than exciting. It also becomes tedious if a character like Steve, Sonic, Snake, R.O.B., or Kazuya is too hard to kill. Even the lower S- and A+ tiers can abuse the same broken options at the expense of the rest of their movesets, like Fox's up smash, Joker's down gun, Palutena's Nair, Olimar's grab combos, Wario's Nair/Up air combo strings, etc.

Conversely, fighters below B+ tier can be demoralizing to watch because they lack options. It isn't fun to watch Ganon, Little Mac, Ike, or Chrom die immediately because of terrible recoveries, or for Pichu, Jigglypuff, and Mewtwo to get blown up because they're so fragile. It isn't fun to watch Zelda, Villager, and Mii Swordfighter struggle to get anything started. Or for heavyweights to get comboed easily. Or for Inkling to struggle landing KOs. Even Sheik can feel fruitless because while her combos are flashy and cool, they inflict unrewarding amounts of damage.

Fighers in the A to B+ range have the right amount of power and options to make matches fun. They tend to capitalize on their entire toolkits which rewards skill, and while they do have X factors to kill quickly, it's not so easy that it becomes predictable, which makes sets more snappy but not broken. There are exceptions of course: Pac-Man and Mega Man can be very campy in some matchups, and Mario can abuse platform combos to make up for being stubby, but overall I feel like this is the ideal balance level.

What do you think? Agree or disagree?
