The honey bee serves as a symbol of our interconnectivity, the influence we have upon non-human counterparts, and how we rely on these beings to keep our environment livable.

It is not only about the bees, who have a complex impact on agriculture, but the pollinators, the insects, the animals that make up our ecosystem and our lost connection to them.

As we experience more extreme weather due to the climate crisis, the bees and all other animals and plants are impacted.

My goal is to bring awareness to this issue and reconnect with these beings."

Hello, this is my first post on Reddit. I am from Indonesia, and there is a huge man-made disaster currently happening here: forest fires in Borneo. The main issue is that after the fires are cleared, oil palm seeds suddenly appear in the affected areas.

I hate how capitalism works because it makes the local communities in Borneo suffer from smoke and respiratory illnesses. But I guess that is how Indonesia wants to grow its economy—by destroying nature.

What do you guys think about this from a Solarpunk perspective?

So as it says. Solarpunk roads. What are we making them out of? The busses and trams and bikes need something smooth yet with good friction and durability to go over. What it is currently made of, bitumen and asphalt is obtained through the fractional distillation of crude oil.

We can’t get crude oil out the ground without the temptation of taking the other parts for fuel, since we can’t put it back and no-one really wants to be storing unsupervised, highly viscous and flammable components indefinitely. Bitumen has a decently high recycling rate 90-100%, but over time, small amounts of new bitumen are needed, especially if you’re recycling roof tiles. They will be worn down slightly less by trams and busses due to purely lower levels of traffic. Still, there will come a time when there is not enough to make new roads / transport systems or resurface old ones.

And here’s the other thing. The power source of the future is a hydrogen cell battery… Which produces water. Either it gets let out of the car to water areas as it goes or it gets stored. And rain, so it’s a good idea to let the water soak in to reduce flooding or be drained away into green grey water storage systems, where the heavy metals can be soaked up by plants (EDIT: the plants bit could be part of some phytomining system.) and water can stay in the environment to keep it green.

I’m guessing either some kind of porous rock like clay, well-drained types of firm soil or something. Maybe we can press algae or fungus into paving stones so they’re biodegradable. (Especially since algae can be used to suck carbon out of the atmosphere and microplastics from the water, so keeping it stored somewhere is of interest.) Idk. This is a very small problem that can wait a few decades, minimum, so it’s not urgent. Anyone have any ideas / have any material on ideas?

Plants, trees and mushrooms follow the same structure.

Birds and bees often make their nests/hives on a simmilar pattern.

Maybe there's some advantage to it.

I was thinking if these could be good idea:

PROS:

• Lots of shadow minimizes heat island effect on ground.
• Allows more public space at ground level, for whatever is needed. Bike parkings, gardens, markets, playgrounds, third spaces...
• Lots of space on top for solar or gardens or meetings.
• Plants do the same to grab the most sun while the shadow they cast prevents competition (more cool at street level, more warm at top level, more surface for solar, just like a plant).
• Protection from bad weather.
• Blocks light pollution more efficiently.

CONS:

• Maybe inefficient use of land?
• Less durable or more brittle?
• Higher maintenance?
• Not very accessible unless elevators are used (normal builsings have tis too, tho).

More pros or cons?

Hi, I'm an electrical engineering student. After being introduced to cyberdecks, and personal tech, I feel inspired to design my CAP (Climate Action Project) in a way that focuses on solarpunk, maybe introduces ways, workshops, etc. on how to make our own tech products that can help or at least not destroy the environment.
I'm new to this community so I'd like to know what people over here think and get some feedback, any more ideas? I'd also love to have some people join me in this project if that's what you'd like.

I've been away from the genre for awhile and wondered what albums or specific songs might have gotten big lately. Also if you know of any artists, recent or fading, who combined indigenous and solarpunk themes in their compositions. Have a GREAT rest of the weekend.

I wrote a manifesto of sorts about solarpunk as a scifi genre, trying to incorporate modern critiques of the genre without throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Most of it relies on the ideas of future theorist and philosopher Donna Haraway. I'd love to know what you all think!

Planets & Monsters: Second Wave Solarpunk

This is the complete research of my project as a university student on the project solar thermal pyrolysis of plastic products.The purpose of this research is to generate an alternative fuel which can be used in engines like diesel and kerosine further more to reduce the plastic waste from the world because plastic is been widelyy used in all of the countries and its waste management is that efficient which causes problems to marine life and to land life,In this project we will be converting the waste plastics like PP &PE into useful resources like synfuel syngas nad biochar,Now there will be a Q going in your mind tht how will we separate PE and PP form mixed plastic in a large amount to get the answer for your Q and for complete knowledge go through my work

Reminded me of this sub. I did a project together with these guys many years ago, they have come a long way since then. You basically buy obligations to help fund solar and battery parks.

I am doing my EPQ (a 5000 word essay that is half an A level) on:

"How can the principles of the solar punk movement inspire a more sustainable future?"

I am wanting to find historical technology - such as the irrigation system used by Aztecs and the architecture commonly seen in hot countries that cool buildings down (window slats and courtyards) - that could be a good addition to a sustainable urban environment.

I would love if anyone had any ideas for me to go research or write about!!

I'm happy to bring to you all the Software Update for a pretty little number of mine called Graftage. For the uninitiated, Graftage is a Solarpunk Hacking game where a bug has turned an office building into a cage, it's workers trapped. You are an IT specialist from the Lorim Ipsum corporation sent to work the problem, free the trapped employees, and get to the bottom of the bug.

The Software Update, as I called it, is a big one, sporting graphic and performance optimizations, new systems to gameplay, and UI improvements that were all very much needed. As it is done, now is the best time to check out what it has to offer. You can see what's what in the link below.

I co-wrote this climate-fiction novel with my co-author, who's a scholar and professor of environmental law. We started talking about climate fiction, and felt like we hadn't seen a cli-fi story that really got into what it's like to be a person living in the realities of climate change. AS we talked it over, we came up with this story:

"In a near-future America ravaged by climate disasters, the Federal Resettlement Agency packs survivors from across the country into shelters like Refuge Inn: a dilapidated Portland hotel, and a purgatory for the displaced. Everyone is expected to pick up the pieces and “move on” as quickly as possible—but between crumbling infrastructure, hostile locals, and trauma that still haunts them, no one leaves easily.

Sierra Valentine has nothing left but the burn wounds from a wildfire that took the only person she stayed alive for. On the bus to Portland, she meets Teo, an undocumented boy who will vanish into a labyrinth of bureaucracy unless Sierra dares to do what scares her most, and care for him.

She can’t do it alone. As she tries to protect Teo, Sierra quickly finds herself entangled in the many broken lives of her new neighbors.

Kosumi McCloud is a guilt-ridden Indigenous engineer desperate to prove himself to the tribe he left behind. Clarice Jackson, the stern FRA director, is struggling to prove the resettlement program can work while dealing with an unplanned pregnancy that makes her question who and what really matters to her.

In a world that constantly threatens to take everything they love, the only thing standing between the residents of Refuge Inn and total collapse is the fragile, fierce decision to find home and salvation in each other."

The second half of the book is where things get more explicitly solar-punk (but no spoilers!) It's definitely not utopian, nor do I think dystopian: I think the most solarpunk thing about it is that it imagines the most solarpunk thing we can do is care about each other.
