News/Politics Swansea Bay Metro

More information has surfaced on the timeline and cost of the Swansea Bay Metro.

The first phase includes a £50m Cockett station (which seems expensive) and more services to Pembrokeshire.

The second phase will see the Swansea District Line opened to passenger trains with new stations at Pontlliw, Felindre, Morriston and Llandarcy.

The 2050 vision includes a £1bn tram line connecting Swansea station to the Neath Valley via the university's Bay Campus together with electrification and the promise of 35-minute services to Cardiff (which seems incredibly fast unless these are direct trains?)

The catch is that there's currently no funding allocated to any of this.

Questions/Advice 1.5 day mini adventure in Swansea/the Gower

İn a couple of weeks, I'll be spending two nights based in Swansea. I spent a few months working there before the pandemic and loved it, and am so happy to be going back, even if it's for a short time. I live overseas now.

I actually wanted to stay somewhere more rural, but couldn't find any accommodation that was budget friendly and accessible by public transport, so found a place near the centre of Swansea that I can easily walk to from the train station as well as getting buses.

I want to maximise my time - I like to get up early, as soon as the sun rises, and I really want to do some excellent walks on the Gower. I arrive around lunchtime on the first day, have the whole of the second day, and then leave at lunchtime on day three. Really looking for suggestions of:

Any new things to see in Swansea itself. When I was there before my favourite things were walking along the seaside, the Japanese gardens in Singleton park, walking to the Mumbles, ice cream at Joe's, Welsh cakes...cocktails at that very tall bar along the seaside.

The best way of spending my one full day. Really keen to get out to the Gower peninsula and know there are some buses - any decent point to point walks I can do? I remember going to three cliffs bay and rhossili in the past and loved them both.

Somewhere I can get a nice cappuccino with a view?

Somewhere in Swansea to get good picnic supplies? Local bakeries rather than Tesco.

Questions/Advice Looking for my mate Louie who was in army in Catterick (2002)

Hi all,
I’m trying to get in touch with my mate Louie (Welsh guy) was based in army in Catterick in 2002. Used to drive an old banger called “The Beast” which he was very proud of 🤣🤣 Unfortunately, we lost contact when he wasn’t off to Afghanistan around that time and my phone was stolen in London and I didn’t have his number written down.
Always hoped he was ok after he was deployed and would love to hear from him after all these years. He’ll remember me as Lee from Coventry, but moved to London around that time. If anyone has any advice on where I can look that’d be great or if anyone knows him please pass on this message.
Cheers

Just putting some feelers out to see if anyone would be interested in having my Bristle nose catfish.

He is roughly 2 years old, who is getting too big for my 110litre tank.

He is constantly breeding with the female so I also have young catfish probably around a year old which need to go.

I might even have some younger catfish on the way as he has made a cave and seems to be protecting, we’ll see.

Questions/Advice ISO central, suitable GPs/Surgery for a neurodivergent person with PTSD/ medical trauma. Looking at Brunswick, wanting patient reviews.

I'm looking at Brunswick since it's come out sounding the best so far and is central.

Can anyone confirm that it's a decent surgery for someone looking to avoid being further traumatised by dismissive GPs?

I need a GP I can *trust* (or a few, since seeing the same one is tough) who will actually *listens* to patients, who will take my physical issues seriously, a proper doctor, in other words.

GP recommendations from people in my kind of situation most welcome.

Diolch!

Questions/Advice French classes/french tutor

Hello, I am a student at Swansea University. I’m looking for French classes or a French tutor in Swansea for complete beginners. Since I’m only a student, I’d appreciate if there’s something that won’t cost me an arm and a leg.

I tried Duolingo and online classes, they didn’t work for me.

I have ADHD and I simply lose interest if I’m not held accountable. But if you’ve any other suggestions, I would be happy to hear. Appreciate your help everyone :)

Other (Editable) Who wants an award?

The powers that be have decided to give me free awards to dish out, I've seen others with the same but I was sure Reddit wouldn't think I was worthy, but here we are!

So, who wants an award? I've got an hour or so to spare to dish some out. I have the following awards available to me:

Clapping hands

Pink heart

Purple 'mind blown' guy

Blue broken heart

Popcorn

Let me know which one you want!

I hope this post is allowed and doesn't get removed! My sincere apologies to the mods if its not allowed, I did read the rules and I *think* I'm good.

Sports Looking for a football team?

Hey all,

I’ve posted on here recently about my football team looking for some players and had a great response back. Just thought I’d post one last time, we are especially desperate for a goal keeper after our first team keeper and captain left us this year.

We are a men’s senior team with a first team and a reserve team. Very friendly and inclusive, we welcome players of all levels and backgrounds. If you’re looking for something to do on Saturday afternoon, fancy getting your fitness levels up or just want to socialise and get to know some more people through sport then please come training and see what we are all about.

We train every Tuesday at 18:30 at:
Garden village recreation ground,
Swansea,
SA4 4ES

If you’re not interested but know someone who is then please pass this message on to them, if you’d rather let us know you’re going to come along then feel free to send us a message on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/share/1K1fPChb1E/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Alternatively we have a form set up, but it does sometimes take a minute to load as we don’t pay for hosting: https://www.yepset.co.uk/go/67ebc73e6c

Appreciate this was a long post, hopefully see some of you soon!

Other (Editable) Thank you Swansea for the lovely time!

My family visited Swansea from the US to celebrate my dad’s 75th birthday. He’s always wanted to visit Wales ever since I can remember as we have Welsh ancestry. To see him with tears in his eyes finally arriving was everything. He’s always been proud of our heritage, I grew up hearing stories he’s learned about our family and some history of Wales.

Most people we met were so nice, welcoming, and were genuinely curious if we were visiting all the good spots! One man had met us all of two minutes before he offered to drive us around South Wales. We couldn’t take him up on his offer (6 people is a lot to cram into a vehicle) but it meant the world to us that he made such a sweet gesture. I will never forget that and I’ve made a goal to pay it forward someday with someone visiting where I live. How inspiring!

I was so sad and embarrassed the few times people were cold to us, as I can only assume it was because of where we are from. I understand and I’m sorry. While I won’t defend the idiots that support him, please know most Americans despise that Trump is destroying our country from the inside out and the cancer it’s inflicted on the rest of the world. How gross is it that such a small group of ghouls can fuck things up so much. My heart breaks from all the new lows, cartoon villanry, and suffering everyday. But I digress.

Thank you Swansea for making this the trip of a lifetime for my dad, and for being so awesome. Your hospitality and kind reputation has extended far beyond your borders and I really hope we can visit again someday! I had to laugh the times people asked, “Why did you come here of all places?” as I remember being just as confused when people would visit my own hometown. What you have as a community in Swansea, in Wales as a whole, is special and for whatever it’s worth I’ve never seen anything like it. So humbly beautiful everything is. Until next time, cheers!
