Back at it again with another session! Making more bass focused music but not necessarily bass heavy if that makes sense.
Getting some cool atmospheric elements out of the Microwave like that warping pad at the beginning and end of this clip. I made some slight changes in the daw but this vid is a really close foundation. The link to the full vid is in the comments if you wanna check it! Lmk if u have any questions about the set up or what you think of the track! Thanks for listening.

Just a warning to anyone in the market. There are some good deals to be found on Vinted but also now a lot of fake posts cropping up recently. Be wary of a price in the 70s and users with no reviews or other items.

New Synth Announcements & Updates A closer look at Tolhuin Chord — timbres, inversions, drums, arp, synced tremolo and looper

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A few people asked to see more of how Tolhuin Chord actually works, so I finally found a little time to record a longer demo.

This is almost 3 minutes of just using the instrument — no talking. I start from boot and go through some of the controls: different timbres, inversions, arpeggiator, drums, tempo-synced tremolo, octave changes, and finally the looper, where I record a chord progression and play a melody over it.

The flute voice near the end is still one of my favorites.

One disclaimer about the audio: this was recorded directly with my phone's microphone. Tolhuin is already stereo — the PCM5102 DAC provides separate left and right channels, and it works fine with headphones and speakers. I just don't have the right cable/setup at the moment to record both channels properly into my audio interface.

For the next hardware revision I'm considering making this more convenient, possibly with separate L/R output jacks. The final output configuration isn't decided yet. I'd be interested to hear what you'd prefer for a DIY synth: a single stereo jack or separate L/R outputs.

I know some people are still waiting for the component list/BOM. I haven't forgotten about it — I just haven't had much time to work on Tolhuin over the last few days, and I wanted to use the little time I had today to show a bit more of how the instrument works.

The BOM itself already exists. I just want to clean it up and make sure what I publish actually corresponds to a reproducible DIY build rather than simply dumping my prototype notes online.

There's already quite a bit of technical information in the GitHub repository for anyone interested in following the development.

Right now I'm also working on the harmony side of the instrument, particularly voicings and voice leading. That's becoming a pretty interesting part of the project, and I'm trying to improve it without losing the immediacy of just pressing a chord button and playing.

I'm also still figuring out how to approach crowdfunding and a first small batch of DIY kits. I have a lot to learn about that side of things, so I'm taking it one step at a time.

Thanks again for all the interest in the first post. I really wasn't expecting that response.

What Should I Buy? What’s a good reverb for ambient music?

Looking for a good reverb pedal to use for ambient music. Something that’s good for soundscapes. My plan is to use it as a send effect on a hardware mixer mostly. Ideally something in the 200-400 dollar range give or take. I’ve had a bit of an eye on Slƶer and Cloudburst but having a bit of decision paralysis at how many other options there are aside from those. Thank you!

Discussion Perkons vs HexDrums (again)

Have a HexDrums and finding it slightly underwhelming. It’s cool, but some of the sounds are worthless for me (closed hats, rimshots). Wondering if a Perkons might be a better fit.

Context: I do power noise / death industrial so it’s gonna get destroyed by effects either way.

This might be six of one, half a dozen of the other for what I do, so feel free to tell me that too.

Bonus points if you also make irritating noises.

Discussion LIVE RECORDING with monologue Ɨ TR8

#korgmonologue #rolandtr8

He was looking for gear for live performances when I came across a synthesizer called the Minilogue. He checked Mercari, found one at a good price, and decided to buy it—only to realize after the purchase that it was actually a Monologue...feel like struggling a bit with the modulation controls, but I’ve managed to make it work somehow. Ideally, He was looking for something to handle chords or upper-register parts (haha), so do you have any recommendations for gear that would pair well with it?

I really liked the new intellijel performance case having a vesa mount as part of it. I do think although it was be super easy to enable that on any case.
Happy that I’ll have easier reach from the case to the matriarch

Discussion Upgrading from a Roland S-1

I really like the Roland S-1 but frankly I struggle with small size of the fonts and the design overall readability, but I also struggle to think of something that would be an option for upgrading and still includes what I like about the S-1: step sequencer, signal path/synth design and effects .
Any suggestions?

Discussion Synth composition templates from Protofield Operators.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Protofield operators are matrices of natural number which can be represented as images by mapping numbers to coloured pixels. Audio rendering can also be accomplished by representing each pixel as an oscillator. Centre square in video shows the sensing zone and the outer square shows the harmonic influence zone which affects the timbre of the sensing pixels. Frequencies are mapped to a moody ultra lochrian seven tone scale over four octaves. Next stage of the project is to reverse the audio to sheet music and midi for re-synthesis or orchestral production.

Compression messes the play back but a 96k 32bit pcm file can be downloaded from this link . Nice with a good pair of headphones or HiFi system.

Beginner Questions beginner at weird/80's Gary Numan style synths : where should i start?

Hi everyone! I'm very new to synthesis and sound design, and I'm trying to learn how to make my own synth sounds rather than relying on presets.

I'm particularly drawn to the colder, stranger side of early electronic/new-wave music, especially the kind of sounds you hear in Gary Numan and David Bowie, as well as darker industrial and darkwave music.

I'm using Ableton and Vital, but honestly I have very little idea what I'm doing yet šŸ˜… Whenever I try to make a synth, it ends up sounding like modern pop/EDM, which is pretty much the opposite of what I'm looking for.

I'm trying to learn how to get things like:

  • cold, slightly eerie bass synths
  • simple but unusual synth melodies
  • funky/robotic basslines
  • dry, mechanical drum-machine sounds
  • synths that sound a little imperfect or "old"
  • dark, atmospheric pads and drones
  • generally less polished/modern electronic sounds

I'm not trying to copy any particular song or recreate an exact patch. I mostly want to understand what makes those sounds work so I can develop my own style from them.

For someone starting from basically zero, what would you recommend I learn first? Are there particular synthesis concepts, tutorials, books, subreddits, or exercises that would help?

And if anyone uses Vital, I'd especially appreciate advice on how you'd approach making a cold/industrial bass or lead from an init patch.

Thanks! :)

Performances, Jams French Touch style flawless jam with the MC-707 and Minifreak, pushing the limits of the built in compressor!

A quick loop I've been working on to try and learn the French House style of acts such as Daft Punk and Justice. I have never been able to get a really pumping four on the floor beat out of this box without editing in the box, however with a bit of tweaking on the compressor on the drum track and an overall compressor on the main FX bus I got a pretty smashed up sound straight from the MC- 707. Only small tweak in post to boost loudness ( need to invest in better recording setup, USB audio is hard to balance).
