PT 2 DISCUSSION Take playing abby out of the game entirely, could P2 have worked if it was soley focused on Ellie and her grief? Spoiler
galleryKeep the story of the game the same, Joel dying, the flashbacks, Seattle and the farm, even Ellie sparing Abby but just take out Abby’s playable sections and have the story focus on Ellie and her journey through grief, could the game have actually worked?
I have many MANY problems with the P2 (I can fully admit that Abby sorta didn’t work for me) but even then I can SEE what they’re. Doing with Ellie and If you even take Abby completely out of the game (but keep her the “villain”) just have the game be ENTIRELY from Ellie’s POV, I think the game would’ve been MUCH stronger.
I actually REALLY enjoy the first part of the game and Ellie’s three days in Seattle, that’s where I feel the writing is the strongest IMO, we see Ellie going to Seattle to get revenge (and to bring back Tommy) but over her three days we also see Ellie struggle and fumble with her vengeance we can tell that with all her anger she’s not a cold blooded killer, she only wants information on Abby and only uses torture as a last resort (she even tries to method on Mel and Owen without violence and only asked for information and she’d spare them and OWEN was the one who escalated that) and even then she has to dig DEEP into her anger with Nora, she’s sick and having a panic attack when she finds out that she killed Mel and she was pregnant but when she gets back to the theater with Dina, Ellie is traumatized at what she did, she’s all but scared of herself and has to constantly calm herself down, she’s lashing out at everyone (Dina, Jessie) hell the ONLY reason Tommy is talking about heading back is he sees what this trip is doing to Ellie and wants to go back for her sake Abby be Damned.
Keep the theater fight and the farmhouse the same and Santa Barbra (except Ellie keeps her fingers)
During the farm Ellie is on autopilot until Tommy has a lead on Abby, Ellie/the player ventures to Seattle finds Abby and sees
Through Abby’s treatment of Lev that Abby has changed from when we last saw her, they still fight but Ellie and abby are too exhausted and collapse and they FINALLY ask “Why” and Abby mentions “I know why Joel did what he did, (with her looking at Lev) I’d do *anything* to protect Him, I know it won’t change anything but I’m sorry, I should’ve let it go” and Ellie admits she’ll never forgive Abby but with her thinking of JJ she also comes to terms with what Joel did at the hospital and comes to the same conclusion Abby did about Lev, they both other separate way and Ellie returns to Jackson hoping to rebuild bridges she burnt.
Sorry this got kinda long and I felt like I rambled but I hope I got my main point across on what I was trying to say about removing Abby’s playable sections and having the game explore Ellie’s grief about Joel/the hospital and how the game was just focusing on Ellie and her journey through her grief and her road to “redemption”
