Question First time torrenting

A little nervous so I thought I'd share my method in case i need any advice. I'm downloading movies for a jellyfin server (running on linux) and ive never torrented before. I wanted to make sure I do it as safely as possible. Im currently using a separate windows PC that is completely empty of any personal information, aside from it being connected to my home wifi i guess. Im using firefox with u block origin to torrent movies from rutracker. I'm using proton VPN with a kill switch. I'm opening them with qbittorrent. Ive also gone into the advanced options of it and selected network interface to ProtonVPN. I also have malwarebytes. It flagged qbittorrent but i hear thats normal. Im currently downloading a movie uploaded 10 months ago from someone who seeemss reputable? I just allowed access to qbit for the windows firewall. When its done downloading im going to scan the file with malwarebytes.

What do you guys think? Am I missing any important steps? Am i being overly cautious and nervous? Its difficult for me to be confident in this when i admittedly dont completely understand how it works. I just dont want a virus or a letter in the mail :p

Question New To Torrenting Question

I’m new to torrenting, broke down and just invested into a 12TB raid and ZimaOS hosting a Jellyfin server (ditching all streaming platforms, I watch the same things over and over anyway). Got my Arr stack up and running as well, everything is working (using TechHut's Docker Compose and followed his readme on Github) so this is not a technical question as much as about precautions I should be taking.

Should I be cognizant of how much I’m downloading? Will my ISP be seeing higher than average amounts of data being downloaded? In theory, I know a vpn should address this issue, but I’ve seen some posts on here and other subs about people getting letters from their ISP regarding suspicious amounts of data being downloaded. Is this any real concern, or as long as I’m careful and making sure my Docker stack is working properly I shouldn’t have much to worry about?

UPDATE:

I appreciate all the responses here, I won't have time to sit down and individually reply. To address a common suggestion I'm seeing, I do have Gluetun setup in my stack and both qBittorrent and NZBGet are bound to my vpn, so everything should be good there. I was mostly concerned about the shear amount of data raising suspicions with my ISP, but sounds like I don't need to be too worried about that.

Thanks all!

Question seeding problem

Pardon my poor English, I'm not a native.

Hi, although I am quite new to this world, I know how torrents and P2P systems work. When I try to torrent a file, I try to keep my ratio 1+ for the culture. However, when I finish downloading, the seeding process becomes almost impossible. I don't see as many peers as I saw while I was downloading the same file. I usually see a maximum of 2-3 peers when I'm seeding. And for the most of the time, I don't see any. I'm not sure if this is a common problem, but I would like to know. I don't want to "hit run" as I highly respect piracy. I'd be glad if you could help.

Question Is possible to remove progress from a file?

I have a big torrent (TBs) of which I don't need all its parts or immediately
So I'm only downloading the individual files I need now, the problem is I full downloaded some wrong files (which I don't need) and some I stopped incomplete.

I can delete the wrong files I downloaded without any problems, of course. What I was interested in was resetting their progress bar to 0% so as not to confuse them with others I had actually downloaded.

Alternatively, he's thinking of the reverse process: if I completely delete the torrent and start over, can I somehow mark the correct files that I've already downloaded as already completed (100%)?

Thanks.

Question Bt4gprx - whatever torrent I try to download the websites downloads "The Odyssey (2026) [1080p] [WEBRip] [5.1].exe.torrent"

Hey normie/newbie here. For I while I was using "Bt4gprx.com" to find torrents and had no problems.

However when I today tried to torrent a movie through its magnet link first the magnet link button did not work, second when i hit the "torrent download" button it only downloaded a torrent called "The Odyssey (2026) [1080p] [WEBRip] [5.1].exe.torrent"

After multiple attempts on the same torrent, I tried downloading from another torrent but had the 100% virus torrent file again. I also tried other movies and etc and got the same result.

So my conclusion was that the website probably got hacked. But the only platform I could find about bt4gprx or torrents was this sub so I wanted to let you guys know.

Cheers

edit:

appearantly other people also has the same problem even on other websites such as 1337x and limetorrents. this post from r/Piracy has more info

Self-Promotion NanoTorrent: The PicoTorrent Rust alternative with more features

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi everybody!

For anyone who liked PicoTorrent but got stuck on it being Windows-only: there's a port called NanoTorrent that rebuilds it in Rust and ships for all three platforms. It's early (v0.2.3), so this is more of a "here's what it is" than a recommendation.

What it actually is

It's a port, not a fork or a rewrite from scratch. It keeps PicoTorrent's application structure, its dialogs, and its settings database schema, but swaps out the whole C++ stack:

  • libtorrent (Rasterbar) → librqbit, vendored and patched
  • wxWidgets → Slint, so it's one window and one codebase on Windows, macOS and Linux
  • SQLite settings file → same schema, different filename (NanoTorrent.sqlite)
  • Win32 mutex + WM_COPYDATA for single-instance → loopback TCP On Windows, first run copies your existing Windows PicoTorrent local data folder and leaves the original alone, so you can try it without committing.

Things PicoTorrent didn't have

  • A built-in web UI (Actix over HTTPS, self-signed by default, Argon2id for the password, refuses to listen off-loopback in plaintext). Add/pause/resume/recheck/move/label, plus a file browser.
  • A headless build (--no-default-features) with no GUI at all, driven entirely through the web UI. Basically a small seedbox daemon.
  • macOS and Linux builds — .dmg, .deb, .rpm, AppImage. The usual stuff is there too: DHT with a persisted routing table, PeX, MSE/PE encryption with require-encryption toggles, anonymous mode, SOCKS proxy, GeoIP peer lookup, PeerGuardian/eMule blocklists, PQL filters and labels, and torrent creation for v1, v2 and hybrid (BEP 52). Translations and country flags are compiled into the binary, so it's a single standalone executable.

What's missing, per the author

This is on their own site, which I appreciate:

  • No µTP peer transport. They say there's no production-ready async Rust µTP crate yet. UDP trackers and DHT work; only µTP peer connections are absent. Depending on your ISP and your peers, this may or may not matter to you.
  • No Local Service Discovery (librqbit doesn't have it), so the DHT/LSD/PeX peer-source rows are status-only.
  • A handful of libtorrent.* settings are stored but don't map to anything in librqbit. They're documented as no-ops rather than silently ignored.
  • Windows won't let it force-claim the magnet handler if another client has it, so it registers itself and dumps you in Settings ▸ Default apps.

Should you switch?

Probably not yet if PicoTorrent works for you — the author says as much, and PicoTorrent is still around and still maintained by Viktor Elofsson and contributors. The interesting cases are: you wanted PicoTorrent on Linux or macOS, you want a tiny headless seeder with a web UI, or you care about running a client with no C++ in the dependency tree.

Links: site · GitHub · releases

The original developer at PicoTorrent has given me his blessing to work on this, but I obviously couldn't use the same name, hence forth, I choose NanoTorrent as I couldn't find any active or recent application using the name.

Give it a whirl, any feedback is appreciated, but the goal is to have a simple but powerful BitTorrent client, that uses a little memory as possible, which in my opinion I succeeded already.

Thanks!

News Limetorrents.lol is giving me .exe files when downloading via magnet/rss feed

Just a bit of a warning to windows users. From linux it's pretty obvious that it's an exe file with the vlc icon, but I switched to limetorrents.fun as it seems like the real site/not compromised. Not sure if using the right flair btw.

Question Mac client recommendation needed

Hi all I’m switching from PC to Mac for my torrenting. Looking for recommendations for what client I should use. On PC I have been using QbitTorrent, should I continue with the same on the Mac? I’ve also heard about Transmission and BiglyBT. I currently use PIA and want to ensure it allows for split tunneling and more importantly VPN binding. Thanks in advance

Question Does anyone know why this is happening?

For the past few weeks, for some reason, they stopped uploading the video formats for the tv shows I watch which have the subtitles automatically embedded to them (ELITE or JFF), and when they do upload those, the subtitles are not automatically embedded. I was wondering if anyone knew why this is happening, and if there’s a solution for it.

Question What Happened to all the Comic Book Torrents?

Years ago I used to be able to find torrents of pretty much any comic I wanted, now I don't see a lot of the complete runs, chronologies and collections that used to be available (Marvel in particular). What happened? I searched Pirate Bay; are they available somewhere else?

Question How does torrenting work on linux?

I started using Linux nobara. I was able to get my client of choice. But am I limited to what I can download? Like Linux only games or can I get something from fit girl and use wine? Or is it something else entirely. I'm very new to Linux but I'm loving it so far. So I'd like to figure this out

Question Absolutely nothing is going

Using transmission on my Mac. Plenty of seeders - multiple files but they are all at a stand still. Some very slowly inching along.

Haven’t downloaded a torrent in months and these would have been done in minutes.

Anyone else having issues?
