Abdul El-Sayed on Trump-Canada trade war: "If you're starting a trade war with Canada is cause you're the asshole. There's a smart use of tariffs. This ain't it. This vanity war is not a war with Canada. It's a war on Michigan because we have to pay the price for goods that should not cost as much."

Trump is literally at war with his own pants. Whoever voted for this a-hole is an absolute human toilet scrub.

Half the USA
-58
u/misterdudebro 16h ago
Bullshit, it wasn't even 35% of the USA due to voter apathy, poor turnout, voter suppression, etc, etc...
87
u/uiemad 15h ago
Look, if you chose not to vote, then you were okay with all of this possibly happening.
26
u/Scrivy69 15h ago
exactly. from a certain perspective, it’s 2/3rds of Americans who don’t have an issue with this guy. can’t wait for them to have laughably poor turnouts for the midterms and the dems end up with a 2 seat majority instead of the entirety of congress
5
u/Esternaefil 11h ago
I still can't see the path to 51 senators, let alone 67 needed to remove this guy from office.

u/EquusMule 15h ago
Hate to do this to you - 35% is still high.
Voter apathy isn't an excuse.
Mitlaufer is the word the germans used.
Okay you didn't vote for him.
Okay you didn't vote.
Who cares?
He's in power now, destroying your country and your future and you are letting it happen. Thats 98% of your country.
Voting is 1 day out of 4 years. 1/1460. 0.0006849315% of the time spent fighting it.
So again. Majority of americans didn't vote for him - who cares?
Do more. Be better. Expect more from your neighbours. Do anything.
Sorry to be so harsh but that's the reality.
Moustache man had 37% support and he got the whole world to go to war with each other, caused 70 million deaths.
Thats the harsh realities.
And don't worry I see other world leaders talking shit - then bending the knee too. It's not just the people its the leadership as well. Dems should be better, dems should offer more to citizens.
Americans deserve better than what you've had.
-8
u/DocPsychosis 11h ago
"Let" implies the power to make things otherwise. Name one thing that a random American citizen could do, other than their voting patterns, to substantially change the current political trajectory. Also banned are suggestions involving political violence or protests, which have obviously had no impact.

u/NorthernSpankMonkey 11h ago
Engage your family and friends on politics, build up your community, give your time to a cause. Then there's resistance, sabotage, unionize...

u/EquusMule 3h ago
A single american citizen cannot do anything except engage in their communities.
Volunteer to door knock is simple. If youre not a good talker, volunteer to drive door knockers around.
Theres a bunch - find out what your local progressives/democrats need and be there. Donate to their cause - inquire aboutnwhat else you can do.

Oh yeah, those who didn’t vote… most of them as per your assumption, would have voted democrat.
Sure buddy….
The sample is big enough to represent the mass: Half the USA brought a pedophile and his pedophile protectors to power. Human toilet scrubs

u/ljlee256 15h ago
Well a fifth of Americans are children. Beyond that its hard to argue against the logic.
I mean, not showing up to vote is essentially the same as saying "I'm good with worst case scenario".
1
u/tophernator 11h ago
If there’s one thing Trump deserves credit for (and there probably is only one) it’s boosting the turnout in elections to historic highs.

I'd be tempted to agree with you, but toilet scrubs are a positive force, and clean shit up, pretty much the opposite.

u/time_drifter 17h ago
I’ve read articles about El-Sayed, his background, his policies, etc., but never heard him speak. He has flashes of Obama’s gift of speaking, with less politically correct restraint. This guy is what the Democrats need to embrace and emulate across the board.
73
u/Iron_Sails 17h ago
I have no doubt there is a bit of coaching to speak that way. I hear it in Talarico as well. It's Obama with a bit of snark.

He has an edge and that's good because the Dems need an edge. We can't keep playing nice. We're playing by the rule book while MAGA ripped up the rule book with a chain saw. We gotta step it up. These sociopaths will continue dragging us into the mud unless we step up and bring some bigger guns.
Abdul is the future.
Also Donald Trump rapes children.
61
u/time_drifter 16h ago
Dems don’t need an edge, they need a fucking backbone. Jefferies and Schumer are the poster men for ineffective leadership because they won’t pick a lane.
31
u/dragons_fire77 14h ago
Their lane is paid adversary. They're very clearly paid for by the billionaires to write strongly worded letters and pretend like they disapprove of what is happening. They're traitors to the democrats, as are any others who take billionaire money at this point. Every voter should familiarize themselves with their local politician doner list at every election cycle. Opensecrets, ballotpedia, find your representative are useful sites.

u/CarminSanDiego 16h ago
Why couldn’t he just be named John or Steve. I don’t care what his name is but half of America will not vote for him because of his name. Such a shame
29
u/harlotstoast 16h ago
Barrack Hussein Obama. Never in a million years did I think a name like that could win the presidency. Hussein like Saddam Hussein and Obama like Osama bin Laden. Fucking wild! Maybe it has marketability.
8
u/LionTigerWings 10h ago
To be fair Barack Obama is a very odd name and ignorant me back in 2008 didn’t get middle eastern vibes from the name from anything but the Hussein part (which is why republicans will go out of their way to say it). Abdul el-sayed may be one of the most stereotypical Arab names I’ve ever heard.
1
u/Mycoplasmosis 6h ago
"EL like them latinos! Or that other goody two shoes illegal alien Superman!"-Republicans probably
9
u/tophernator 11h ago
This isn’t really an issue because the kind of people who would never vote for someone with a middle eastern name would also never vote for a democrat anyway.
5
u/MountainMan17 16h ago
You're probably right. Which means this country deserves whatever fate has in store it...
2
u/berfthegryphon 10h ago
Best we can do is a muzzle for him and 30 minutes of Schumer infront of Gen Z
1
u/xxhybridzxx 5h ago
That's the same reason Trump won twice, albeit with a different message and IQ level. He spoke using words his people wanted to hear. Nobody wants the weakling in charge, Obama came in strong as hell and got his 2 terms. Dem's need someone quick witted and mouthy, they keep trying to play the old political game, that doesn't work in this age.
1
u/frankyseven 8h ago
I love his energy in how he talks. He went on Fox and the host kept trying to turn the conversation to Trans Athletes and he kept sidestepping the question to talk about his actual policies. The host kept asking so he went "are you circumcised? You want to talk about peoples' genitals, let's start with yours". Which all of a sudden was a question that was completely out of line. It's exactly the response that's needed.
-2
u/renegadecanuck 9h ago
It's so fustrating how much the Democratic establishment is trying to attack him.
1
u/RheagarTargaryen 8h ago
Not anymore. He’s the candidate for Michigan and they need him to win now.
2
u/renegadecanuck 7h ago
And yet they are still going on about Hasan Piker and using it to attack Abdul. Schumer is even saying privately "we have a path to Senate control without Michigan".
0
u/RheagarTargaryen 7h ago
That could be interpreted 2 different ways. It’s a tossup. If the Dems lose Michigan and win NC (the 2 most likely flip chances in the senate races) there’s plenty of toss up opportunities where they could win. You’re choosing to interpret that as “we don’t want El-Sayed to win.” Instead of “what happens if we lose this seat that we held? Can we still win the senate without it?”
El-Sayid has also distance himself from Hasan.
-19
u/Bossman01 15h ago edited 7h ago
Yeah I follow a content creator called Hutch who has some solid takes on El-Sayed. He said the same thing about him reminding him of Obama. He hopes he will win, however his campaign has made some obvious mis-steps which is hurting his general support.
6
u/elgringo0091 14h ago
Mis-steps like what?
1
u/renegadecanuck 9h ago edited 7h ago
My guess is the "mistake" is criticizing Israel.
3
-2
u/Bossman01 7h ago
I don’t know why people think I was talking about Israel. If you watch Hutch his main criticism is that El-Sayed campaigned with Hasan Piker. Regardless of what you think of the man, his greatest hits are being played on the news networks and being associated with El-Sayed now because they campaigned together
10
u/soundsofshade 12h ago
My guy, Hutch just the other day said he hated the left more than MAGA….if you’re at all a serious person, drop that habit and find a new political news source because any news you get through that lens is fucking poisoned.
Abdul is GOATED at his comms but the only missteps he’s made by my estimation is giving in, even if only slightly, to the oppositions framing. Which is the same exact framing Hutch uses to bash the left in general. If you ever are watching CNN or Fox News or MSNow and find yourself agreeing with the negative framing of candidates like Abdul, Angie Nixon, Darializa, Valdez etc. (especially if the main criticism is they got support from Hasan and Hasan=terrorist) then you are literally just slurping on propaganda and doing the establishments job for them.
WE, the US voters, especially those of of us without enough free energy to comment about this on the internet, have GOT to kill the “political pundit” in our brains and VOTE/Volunteer our energy for candidates that actually care about US.
5
u/parker2020 9h ago
Hutch… hutch I hate the left more than MAGA hutch? Dude needs to pick a lane and stop grifting.

Hutch then went on stream to show that Hasan does nothing but shit on the dems… then looks like an ass and moves the goal post. A. Hasan isn’t an extremist. B. Hutch doesn’t know what he’s talking about. C. Frankly you don’t either.
If you thought Hasan was an extremist why would the right platform or allow trump to go on nick Fuentes’ podcast. Like it’s such a wack double standard. You need to worry about policy and wonder why hutch does nothing but worry about Hasan and not the DNC.
this shit is unproductive1
u/Bossman01 2h ago
Omg, Hasan isn’t an extremist? I can’t with this conversation. As someone who used to watch him, I can assure you he is an extremist.
He literally went on a rant saying "America deserved 9/11" while mocking a wounded military veteran. He got hit with a Twitch ban for saying on air that people "would kill Rick Scott" over healthcare fraud. He constantly flirts with advocating political violence and praising extremists. He has supported literal terrorists from Hamas and Yemen. The lists goes on and on1
u/Bossman01 2h ago

Soooo you watched Hasan and don’t understand the context of the first statement being blow back from American imperialism and you misquoted the Rick Scott statement. Explanation isn’t justification. The hypocrisy is that Rick Scott did healthcare fraud and instead of any consequences he’s senator. He in both cases used to his admission terrible language but Rick Scott should be serving life for defrauding people not a representative for them. No one disagrees that 9/11 is a blow back event if you disagree you’re either 6 or ignore American action in the Mideast for past idk 60 years.

Canada is diverting as much trade away from USA as posible, deepening ties to Europe and Asia.
And while USA continues its isolationist agenda, the rest of the world will become more interconnected.
On top of that, USA is losing its war in the middle east AND they stoped developing or even maintaining thier soft power.
To make it even bonkers, USA dept keep rising and everyone is selling of US bonds.

No buddy, tariffs are always dumb, backwards, protectionist bullshit that ultimately hurt consumers and discourage innovation and competition. Unfortunately both parties seem dead set on being populist grifters, so alas, here we are. That being said, anyone but maga is better in the short term.
7
u/tophernator 11h ago
Specific targeted tariffs can absolutely be a good thing or flat-out necessary thing to prevent crucial domestic sectors from being driven out of business.
E.g. one of the things Trump and the right wing media latched onto around Canada was very high tariffs on dairy products that kick in when too much US dairy is entering Canada.
Without this quota system the US could accidentally (or deliberately) flood the Canadian market with cheap dairy products putting the whole Canadian dairy industry out of business. Then Canada would be entirely dependent on the US for a crucial element of their food supply. Even if US dairy then became obscenely expensive, it would take years to rebuild/breed dairy herds.
This is targeted common sense “protectionism” that everyone should understand and agree with.
7
u/Genericgeriatric 10h ago
Fun fact: those dairy tariffs have never kicked in because there has never been enough US dairy imported into Canada for those tariffs to take effect
-5
u/biscuitboss 9h ago
Then find a way to produce dairy products more efficiently and compete. A classic American exampl would be the tariffs we have placed on Chinese EV. They are cheaper, better made, easier to fix and yet because we "need" to protect American car manufacturers they are not available in the American market. Even though it would be beneficial on many fronts to the larger American public if they were. Protectionism is not something I will ever get behind. Find a way to make a better product and compete or go out of business. We don't need the government choosing winners and losers in business. That is a recipe for stagnation in a world that is anything but. Don't settle for mediocrity just because someone will need to find a new job. We have reached a massive global economy and it's not going back to the 19th century.
2
u/Dirks_Knee 9h ago
Biden had the right idea to heavily incentive the US EV industry for a kick start. That combined with tariffs was working. Yet, here we are...
-3
u/biscuitboss 8h ago
Why do I care if Ford goes tits up because of a combination of shitty products and short sighted greed? Respond to the global market or die.
1
u/Dirks_Knee 8h ago
You shouldn't care about Ford specifically, you should absolutely care about the 4.5 million autoworkers and what happens when a country suddenly has no control over any sector of an industry. When a global industry's pricing is controlled by a single country, then they have an extreme influence. For example, let's say China decides they need to boost GDP and the method they choose is to make exported autos 20% more expensive. What's a consumer's recourse when all cars come from China? Pricing control can happen in an instant, building manufacturing infrastructure takes decades.
0
u/biscuitboss 7h ago
Well fortunately no country has ever cornered a market like this nor ever will. There are many countries that produce cars, it's hardly US vs China. Innovate and make a better product. And as to the 4.5 million people, my response to that is move to a place with modern industry and get a new job. Your logic would suggest that we should've protected the jobs of horse and carriage drivers when the model T came out, or how the printing press was devastating to the scribe market. Boo hoo, change happens.
1
u/Dirks_Knee 6h ago
You are only looking at one side of the equation. Absolutely EV tech in China has surpassed the US, but that tech largely isn't about efficiency in construction, the low price comes from exploiting the wage differential and the Chinese government's strategic direction to grow influence in the market both through product price/currency control.
Lower the avg US citizen's wages to ~18K matching China and then suddenly cars become competitive, of course then price of a car relative to local wages will still be high.
1
u/tophernator 9h ago
Let me explain further with my dairy example.
Farming is difficult to plan production around. Herds get sick, droughts cause feed shortages, dietary fads drive changes in demand. So without any malice in mind it’s possible for US dairy farms to breed larger herds than they needed (because none got sick), produce more milk per cow (because grazing conditions turned out great), and to find drastically reduced domestic demand (because of some diet fad).
Their options are now to dump milk down the drain, or sell it super cheap into other markets with Canada being the obvious one.
So now Canadian farmers (who may be facing the exact same pressures in their own market) have to compete with almost literal floods of US milk being sold for less than it cost to produce.
There is no “find a better way” in that scenario. They just go out of business, and for the next 5-10 years Canada’s dairy intake is now subject to the US.
-8
u/thebige91 11h ago
Why do so many seem to have a problem when the US does the same thing to protect their manufacturers or businesses?
8
u/tophernator 10h ago
They don’t. The blanket tariffs Trump has enacted over and over are not remotely the same as what I described above.
When Biden was using tariffs on Chinese EVs or passed the CHIPS act those were overtly massive protectionist policies. But they were also targeted. Plus the auto industry could look at those 100% Chinese EV tariffs and say “great, we can plan our factories and productions plans around those”. They didn’t have to make a bunch of different projections based on those rates doubling, or halving, or being paused for 3 months, or cancelled altogether, all on the erratic whims of the president.
-4
u/thebige91 10h ago
You don’t see tariffs on Cars, steel, aluminum, etc as targeted tariffs and instead see them as blanket?
The Section 338 tariffs on Canada are just 5% of Canadian imports. I wouldn’t call that blanket, and sounds like hyperbole to me.
Why does Canada have the right to tax US goods higher than other countries, but it’s not the same thing if the US does it to Canada?
That doesn’t sound right to me.
5
u/tophernator 9h ago
You may be misremembering how we got here. Trump initially attempted to throw out the USMCA deal that his own administration had negotiated and impose 25% tariffs on almost everything from Canada.
He eventually relented on that, but it’s pretty hard to pretend he is targeting key industries for strategic reasons when that was his opening gambit, and when the tariffs he’s throwing around now are basically on anything that the USMCA doesn’t cover.
-2
u/thebige91 9h ago
The deal that’s was subject to joint review every 6 yrs and any one of the partners could reject if they wanted better terms? Are you saying that trade agreements should be in place indefinitely?
Also, US exempted the goods compliant with the (USMCA) from tariffs in Canada and Mexico.
Your own link confirms that. Seems pretty targeted to me. Thanks for the source confirming that.
On March 6, Trump exempted goods compliant with the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) from tariffs. Later, the U.S. imposed universal tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automotive imports, including those from Mexico and Canada. Due to the USMCA exemption, as of August 2025, over 85% of Canada-U.S. trade and 84% of Mexico-U.S. trade remains tariff-free.[1]
3
u/tophernator 9h ago
US exempted USMCA goods eventually. A bunch of legal protections and large market reactions caused Trump to walk back from his initial blanket tariffs. So you’re pretending that it was all part of his genius plan and what he really wanted was tariffs on stuff that just so happens not to be covered by the deal he’d already previously agreed to?
0
u/thebige91 6h ago
You just explained what negotiations look like from a position of leverage. US ultimately benefited in that outcome. Just as they are now.
US doesn’t want Canada to act as a dumping ground for cheap Chinese metals/products they export to us. It’s simple.
You can’t negotiate without leverage.
0
u/tophernator 6h ago
You just explained what negotiations look like from a position of leverage.
No. No sane person buys into these arguments that Trump is playing 4D chess. His own explanation for what he’s trying to achieve varies wildly depending on what time of day you ask, or who he talked to last. But if his goal really and truly was to prevent Chinese imports to Canada then he’s done the exact opposite by pushing them and every other trading partner to do more business with China.

It's been almost two years of this, surely you realize that's not what has been happening here...
-2
u/thebige91 10h ago
So the tariffs Biden decided to keep on Canada after Trumps first term didn’t serve that purpose either? Why did Biden decide to keep the tariffs then?
Also you think it’s fair for Canada to tariff the US higher than other countries on certain goods, but the US can’t do that in retaliation?
3
u/FangioV 10h ago
Most of the time it’s basically rent seeking. For example, the tariff on Chinese cars was basically lobbied by American manufacturers and unions because they weren’t able to compete against Chinese made cars. Every time someone is pushing for a tariff I guarantee there is a company lobbying for it because competition is going to destroy their margins.
0
u/Ididntdodiddly 9h ago
China weaponizes gov subsidized industries like rare earth mining. They lowered prices and forced our mines to close. The only way to maintain one open is to help and tariff.
And you're gonna sit there saying it's stupid
1
u/Yodl007 10h ago
How about this scenario: Your neighbor is a big producer of a necessary commodity, say wheat for example. Your country is not suited to produce wheat in such numbers and your farmers don't produce as much. So their wheat is cheaper. If you don't put a tariff on it to make it near same price all your wheat growers die off leaving you with only importing said wheat. Now the bigger country increases the price far above (or forces you to remove tariff on the next thing, and the next) what wheat from your own more expensive producers was before and has you by the balls.

In a vacuum, sure. Combined with incentives/spending to speed track business development, it's absolutely an effective tool to fast track a domestic industry.

Yeah this'll be a hot take on Reddit, but it's also bad politics in this moment. If folks on the left try to play both sides of tariffs, like "We like some tariffs but not Trump's", it's going to sound disingenuous and no one's going to believe it.
The only reason Dems are still soft on tariffs is because they're trying to appeal to unions. But unions keep stabbing them in the back and voting for Trump. It's not worth it.

This is just to make his friends richer. One judge says this is not correct, tariffs will be "turne off" and the companies get the money back, not the consumer. We've seen this a few weeks ago.

This dude doesn’t know anything about politics, tariffs or economics

Yeah we need acclaimed political scientist and economists like Tommy Tuberville or Darlene Graham as senators? right??

Would you like to try to explain how the economic analysis he makes in this video demonstrates how he "knows nothing" about it?
Because your claim seems baseless and in bad faith without presenting any evidence.

You can't start an argument with them because they don't know what's going to come out of their mouth next.

This guy right here knows what's up. True American christian patriots all know that only the p3dophiles we proudly vote for actually know what they are talking about when it comes to tariffs and economics.
R@ping kids is a prerequisite you know? We Christians know the truth!

Wait, Canada is an idiot because they are making their citizens pay tariffs on American goods.
Am I getting his right?
Canada has huge tariffs on American goods sk they are kicking themselves in the balls?

Canada did not start the trade war. Canada did not break or try to renegotiate an existing deal through force.
70% of Canadians are in favour of standing up for ourselves. 66% of Americans are against this bullying of Canada.
Everyone is affected. Everyone is paying for this fiasco. There are no winners here.

No, Canada has egregiously high tariffs on American goods. What are they stupid? They are making their citizens pay the tariffs

They have high tariffs on American goods that Canada also makes so America cant come in and take over all their industry. I know this is probably beyond your understanding of geopolitical issues but sovereignty is protected by your ability to control certain essential industries. Certain industries are essential to an economy and a country running on its own so they tariff those products from other countries as a way to protect their sovereignty and ability to support their own country in times of struggle and also to avoid having to essentially bend the knee to companies and interest groups from other country's because they control massive parts of your essential good production from outside your own country.

Okay, so America can put tariffs on other countries bc everyone targets America. This is just protecting America's industries. Litterally the entire point. If every country puts high tariffs on American goods then American companies are ad a severe disadvantage.
We have seen Chinese companies do this to America in rare earth industry and it shut down the mines

I feel like you just have no understanding about how this actually works and the political and economic mechanism a tariff is typically used for. Maybe do a bit of non news/social media reading about the use cases for tariffs and youll have a better understanding of what's going on. Trump is essentially causing americans to pay shit loads of extra taxes for no reason because stuff hes putting tariffs on are well established import items because north America has had free trade for decades and it greatly benefits everyone Involved. If you wanna pay shitloads more for the stuff the free market has determined should be imported bcz its cheaper to produce elsewhere until you can build factories and get production of said shit going, then pay more than before anyways bcz the free market had already determined it was more efficient to produce elsewhere then sure, blow your hair back. Americans will just pay fuckloads more for stuff they cant source locally bcz its not produced there and that all goes to te american government, factories dont pop up overnight either, gonna be tough for small/medium business with Trump fucking up your ability to import cheaply.

Wait a second.... It's fair when everyone tariffs USA, but the second USA wants to protect it's own industries it's not okay.
If Canada puts tariffs on USA it's good protection. Only USA isn't allowed to protect their industries. Lmao

u/PolarBeaver 4h ago
Hea not protecting anything my guy, this isn't helping America. Seems to me you have literally 0 understanding of whats actually going on here.

You: Free trade is when American cars are tariffed 10% in Germany, but German cars are taxed 2.5% in America
You: If America changes this it's wrong and bad and orange man isn't protecting.
What a joke you are

If it was anyone but Trump, I'd be really wondering why they'd be hurting Michigan right now. Seems like it's really hurting the conservative in the race in a year they're already weak.
But Trump being horny to attack Canada and distract from other shit, yeah that makes sense.
