The 2026 Triton Invitational concluded Sunday with nine games, an overtime upset by the host Tritons, two historic victories for Saint Mary’s and another offensive showcase from USC.

UC San Diego delivered the tournament’s most dramatic finish.

No. 12 UC San Diego defeated McKendree 21-7 before upsetting No. 8 Pepperdine 17-15 in overtime to complete an impressive 5-1 opening weekend.

The Tritons led Pepperdine 15-14 before Jackson Benners tied the game with 22 seconds remaining. Jack Wright then scored both goals in the first overtime period to secure the victory.

Christian Hammonds led UCSD with five goals and two assists. Jackson Boettner added three goals and four assists, while Finn Bugelli scored three times. Pepperdine goalkeeper Max Smirnov made 16 saves in the loss.

UC San Diego’s only loss during the tournament came against No. 4 Cal.

Long Beach State completed a perfect 6-0 weekend.

No. 7 Long Beach State survived a high-scoring battle with No. 8 Pepperdine, winning 20-18, before closing the tournament with a 25-6 victory over La Verne.

The Beach finished the weekend with 141 goals in six games, an average of 23.5 per game. Long Beach State did not face UCLA, USC or Cal, but its depth and offensive production made it one of the tournament’s most impressive teams.

USC finished 4-0 and set a program scoring record.

No. 2 USC closed its weekend with a dominant 27-10 victory over No. 15 UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos pulled within 7-5 during the second quarter, but USC answered with five consecutive goals before halftime and scored nine times in the third quarter.

Strahinja Krstic led the Trojans with four goals. Robert López Duart, Apostolos Georgaras, Luke Nelson and Adrian Senciac each recorded hat tricks, while Charles Mills added five saves and four steals.

USC outscored its four opponents 107-33. According to the program, those 107 goals represent the highest total across any four-game stretch in USC history. All 18 Trojan field players scored at least once during the weekend.

Saint Mary’s earned the first two victories in program history.

After opening its inaugural season with four losses against ranked opponents, No. 20 Saint Mary’s broke through Sunday with a 12-9 victory over Bucknell.

Leo Hachem scored six goals as the Gaels protected an 8-5 halftime lead. Saint Mary’s then defeated Mercyhurst 26-9 behind seven goals from Hugo Riley and five from Kyle Stilinovich.

Hachem finished the inaugural six-game weekend with a team-leading 15 goals and was named the AntiWave MVP of the Tournament. Saint Mary’s was selected as the AntiWave Team of the Tournament.

UC Santa Barbara experienced both sides of a 27-goal game.

No. 15 UCSB opened Sunday by defeating Mercyhurst 27-6. Dylan Morris scored five goals, while Tyler Roller, Sean Keane and Kyle Franks each recorded hat tricks.

The Gauchos then fell 27-10 to USC. Finn Genc scored three times in the loss as UCSB completed the tournament with a 4-2 record.

Nothing says “there’s nothing to see here” quite like removing a post that appears to fall squarely within the purpose of r/NewportBeach.

The post concerned Newport Harbor High School-a public high school in Newport Beach-and discussed published reporting involving its water polo program. It was directly relevant to the community, cited publicly available reporting, and raised questions about matters involving a local public institution.

Yet it was removed.

If the post violated a specific subreddit rule, moderators should be able to identify that rule and explain how it was violated. If they cannot, the removal creates a much more uncomfortable question: was the problem really the content of the post-or the fact that the subject was inconvenient?

When parents, coaches, administrators, boosters, and community members become deeply invested in championships, rankings, recruiting pipelines, social media and the reputation of a successful program, scrutiny can start being treated as hostility. Questions become “attacks.” Critics become “troublemakers.” Protecting the institution slowly becomes more important than examining whether the institution deserves protection.

You can delete a Reddit post. You cannot delete civil lawsuits, erase published reporting, or make legitimate questions disappear. And you certainly cannot stop people from pushing mainstream media to investigate the facts, the decision-making, and the institutions involved. If anything, trying to suppress public discussion only creates a bigger question: what exactly are people at Newport Harbor Water Polo so determined to keep out of the spotlight?

Two days, 21 games and very little time for anyone to ease into the season. The 2026 Triton Invitational at UC San Diego has already delivered a near-upset, several dominant performances and an impressive collegiate debut.

UCLA and USC looked every bit like the top two teams.
No. 1 UCLA defeated Saint Mary’s 23–5 and Bucknell 23–8. Ben Liechty scored seven times across the two games, while Stanford transfers Jack Merrill and Griffen Price made immediate contributions. No. 2 USC went 3–0 and outscored its opponents 80–23. Strahinja Krstic scored four in the 22–9 opening win over Saint Mary’s, and the Trojans followed with 30–5 and 28–9 victories Saturday.

Cal made the strongest statement Saturday.
The No. 4 Golden Bears erased an early 3–0 deficit to defeat No. 15 UC Santa Barbara 14–9, then pulled away from host No. 12 UC San Diego for a 15–11 victory. Luke Bachler and Dom Brown recorded hat tricks, while Riley Clansen made a career-high 17 saves against UCSD. Cal finished the day 2–0 against ranked opponents.

Saint Mary’s nearly produced a storybook varsity debut.
Playing the first varsity game in program history, No. 20 Saint Mary’s raced out to an 8–3 lead over No. 15 UCSB and led 10–9 at halftime. The Gauchos eventually survived 16–14 behind eight goals from freshman Luigi Canepa and two saved penalty shots by Wyatt Pieretti. Saint Mary’s finished the two days 0–4, but its performance against UCSB showed that the new program could become competitive quickly.

Long Beach State quietly put together the tournament’s most productive start.
The No. 7 Beach went 4–0 and scored 96 goals. Corbin Stanley and Federico Gulisano each scored six against Bucknell, while Gulisano added four against Saint Mary’s. Keegan Moore, Stanley and Chase Krupitzer also scored four apiece in the 24–4 win over Mercyhurst.

UC San Diego took care of business before running into Cal.
The host Tritons opened 3–0, outscoring Bucknell, Mercyhurst and La Verne 63–19. Christian Hammonds scored four and Jackson Boettner added three in the 15–11 loss to Cal, leaving UCSD 3–1 through Saturday.

12:10 p.m.: No. 15 UC Santa Barbara vs. No. 20 Saint Mary’s

The first varsity game in Saint Mary’s history comes against a nationally ranked UCSB program.

The Gauchos finished 17–14 and placed second in the Big West last season, outperforming their fifth-place preseason prediction. However, they enter 2026 with significant roster turnover and were again picked fifth by the conference’s coaches.

Saint Mary’s begins its inaugural season ranked No. 20. The new program has built a roster with athletes from California, across the United States and several international water polo systems. How quickly the Gaels establish their defensive structure and team identity will be more important than their opening-weekend record.

5 p.m.: No. 1 UCLA vs. No. 4 Cal - exhibition in Coronado

This top-five exhibition is not part of the Triton Invitational and will be played at the Brian Bent Memorial Aquatics Complex in Coronado. It is still the weekend’s biggest early look at two national-championship contenders.

UCLA finished 27–2, scored a program-record 497 goals and defeated USC 11–10 to win its second consecutive NCAA championship. The Bruins return 20 members of that title-winning roster, including seven of their eight leading scorers, while adding nine newcomers.

Cal returns 18 players, including its five leading scorers from 2025. The Bears own an NCAA-record 17 national championships and won three consecutive titles from 2021–23.

Because this is an exhibition, the most meaningful observations will involve rotations, defensive combinations, goalkeeper usage and how each team handles its depth.

5:30 p.m.: No. 2 USC vs. No. 20 Saint Mary’s

Only five hours after its first varsity game, Saint Mary’s must face the defending MPSF champion and NCAA runner-up.

USC went 23–4 last season with 19 victories over ranked opponents. The Trojans won their fourth consecutive MPSF Tournament championship and reached the NCAA final for the fifth time in six seasons.

USC enters 2026 with another deep roster and seven newcomers. Saint Mary’s will be tested in transition, at two meters and when defending USC’s extra-player offense. ⁠

Saturday, August 29

9:20 a.m.: No. 1 UCLA vs. No. 20 Saint Mary’s

This is UCLA’s official season opener and Saint Mary’s third ranked opponent in less than 24 hours.

The score may be less revealing than UCLA’s lineup decisions. The Bruins have enough returning experience and incoming talent to use multiple combinations without significantly lowering their level of play.

For Saint Mary’s, the priorities will be limiting transition opportunities, communicating defensively and establishing a consistent frontcourt attack against the deepest roster in the country.

10:30 a.m.: No. 4 Cal vs. No. 15 UC Santa Barbara

This matchup contrasts Cal’s roster continuity with UCSB’s significant turnover.

Cal returns its five leading scorers and its primary goalkeeper from last season. UCSB must replace much of the veteran core that helped it finish second in the Big West.

The Gauchos will need to stay organized defensively and avoid allowing Cal to turn steals and blocked shots into quick counterattack goals. Cal’s depth should also become increasingly important as the game progresses.

1:20 p.m.: No. 7 Long Beach State vs. No. 20 Saint Mary’s

This will be Saint Mary’s fourth consecutive game against a ranked opponent.

Long Beach State finished 17–9 and went 5–0 in Big West play last season. The Beach was picked to win the conference for the third consecutive preseason and returns a deep, physical frontcourt along with several experienced scorers.

Saint Mary’s will be challenged to defend two meters without repeatedly conceding exclusions. Long Beach’s ability to establish its center attack and convert its resulting 6-on-5 opportunities should control the game.

2:40 p.m.: No. 12 UC San Diego vs. No. 4 Cal

This may be the host’s best upset opportunity.
Cal returns to the water only four hours after facing UCSB. UCSD finished 21–10 last season and won seven consecutive games during one stretch of the campaign.

The Tritons return an experienced defensive and goalkeeping foundation and will have the home-pool advantage. To pull the upset, UCSD must control transition, generate exclusions and execute its extra-player offense before Cal’s superior depth takes over.

4 p.m.: No. 1 UCLA vs. Bucknell

UCLA leads the all-time series 9–0 and defeated Bucknell 24–10 last season.

This should give UCLA another opportunity to evaluate different combinations and distribute minutes throughout its roster. Bucknell’s experience should provide a useful test, but UCLA will be heavily favored.

Sunday, August 30

10:40 a.m.: No. 7 Long Beach State vs. No. 8 Pepperdine - the tournament’s only official top-10 game

This is the featured matchup at Canyonview and likely the most evenly matched game of the weekend.

Long Beach State wants to establish its center attack, draw exclusions and create high-percentage extra-player opportunities. Pepperdine’s challenge will be defending two meters without collapsing its perimeter defense.

Pepperdine finished 17–11 last season, earned 11 victories over ranked opponents and reached the WCC Tournament semifinals. The Waves have finished inside the national top 10 in 47 of the past 50 seasons.

Fatigue could matter. This will be Long Beach State’s fifth game in approximately 48 hours but only Pepperdine’s third. Goalkeeping, center defense and 6-on-5 efficiency should decide the result. Long Beach State preview⁠ | Pepperdine preview⁠

1:20 p.m.: No. 2 USC vs. No. 15 UC Santa Barbara

USC has won seven consecutive games against UCSB, including 16–10 and 22–13 victories last season.

The matchup will test UCSB’s rebuilt defense and goalkeeper rotation against one of the country’s deepest and most physical attacks. The Gauchos must defend two meters without giving USC uncontested perimeter opportunities.

USC should be favored, but a competitive performance would support the argument that UCSB is better than its No. 15 ranking.

4 p.m.: No. 12 UC San Diego vs. No. 8 Pepperdine

Pepperdine defeated UCSD 10–9 at last year’s Triton Invitational, making this one of the weekend’s most interesting rematches.

Pepperdine will be playing its second ranked opponent of the day after facing Long Beach State. UCSD will be playing its sixth game of the weekend. Bench depth, conditioning and fourth-quarter execution could be decisive.

A victory over Pepperdine or Cal would immediately strengthen UCSD’s top-10 argument. Two Sunday wins for Pepperdine would establish the Waves as one of the strongest challengers outside the traditional MPSF powers.

Lucca van der Woude, once considered one of American water polo’s top Olympic prospects, recently admitted under oath that he transferred prior to the 2024-25 academic year to Newport Harbor High School from Harvard-Westlake only after the nationally renowned private school banned him from its campus following his February 2024 arrest following allegations that he had “SA” teammates, according to a transcript of a deposition of van der Woude reviewed by the Southern California News Group.

Van der Woude’s admission appears to indicate that he was ineligible to play for Newport Harbor under California Interscholastic Federation rules when the CIF Southern Section approved his transfer in August 2024, enabling him to compete for the Orange County school.
Van der Woude, a star on the U.S. national youth team, also admitted in the deposition that he used the N-word, usually without being disciplined by Harvard-Westlake coaches, employees or administrators.

“Are you surprised you didn’t get in trouble for saying the N-word?” van der Woude was asked in an August 6 deposition.

“I guess, yes,” van der Woude responded.
Van der Woude admitted in Los Angeles County Juvenile Division Court on Nov. 7, 2024, to s***** penetration with a foreign object against a minor, according to Los Angeles County Juvenile Court, Los Angeles County Probation Department, Los Angeles Superior Court filings and U.S. Center for SafeSport documents reviewed by the Southern California News Group (SCNG). 

Neither van der Woude’s admission nor his arrest at Harvard-Westlake nine months earlier prevented him from transferring high schools, leading his new school, Newport Harbor, to a CIF title, representing Team USA internationally or in December 2024 mentoring the nation’s top 13- and 14-year-olds at a camp sponsored by USA Water Polo, the sport’s Irvine-based national governing body, at the nation’s most prestigious Olympic training site.

Nine days after his juvenile court admission, van der Woude led Newport Harbor to the CIF Southern Section Open Division title.

Van der Woude’s most recent admission in his deposition is likely to renew pressure on the CIF to investigate the circumstances surrounding his transfer to Newport Harbor, whether Newport Harbor coach Ross Sinclair, a friend and coaching colleague of Harvard-Westlake coach Jack Grover, was aware of van der Woude’s arrest and banishment from the private school, and whether Newport Harbor should be stripped of the CIF title.

CIF Southern Section commissioner Mike West said in an email to SCNG that the organization is reviewing the matter.

“There is nothing complicated about this. Lucca van der Woude was punished after being arrested for SA minors,” attorney Daniel P. Watkins told SCNG. “Lucca van der Woude was barred from Harvard-Westlake and the water polo team. He transferred because he could not return. Those are the facts. The only complexity comes from the effort to explain how those facts somehow disappeared when it came time to tell CIF the truth.”

Newport Mesa Unified School District officials did not merely watch these transfers happen. They reviewed and approved them-including the residency claims and the supposedly academic explanations. That means someone inside the district opened the files, evaluated the evidence, accepted the explanations, and authorized the athletes to compete.

Who made those decisions?

Who signed off?

What documents were reviewed?

Were the same officials repeatedly involved?

Did coaches, club representatives, administrators, donors, or influential water-polo parents communicate with district personnel before approval?

Were any applicants given guidance, exceptions, or a smoother path than ordinary students?

The district should identify the approval process, the responsible officials, the dates of each decision, and the documentation supporting every transfer. “The district approved it” is not an answer.

The academic rationale deserves even harsher scrutiny. Connecticut ranks among the strongest public-school systems in the country, while California ranks lower overall. Connecticut also has a substantial share of top-ranked high schools and strong national assessment results.
So if the explanation is that an elite athlete left Connecticut for Newport Harbor because of academics, the district should produce more than a vague sentence and a signature.

Show the academic program that supposedly justified the move. Show the course comparisons. Show the enrollment communications. Show the residency records. Show the application timeline. Show who initiated contact, who recommended Newport Harbor, and what specific educational opportunity could not be obtained in Connecticut.

Polo rankings and CIF championships do not prove motive. They do, however, make unsupported academic explanations impossible to accept on faith. If the academic rationale is legitimate, the records should demonstrate it. If the records do not exist, were created after the fact, or contradict the public explanation, then the “academic transfer” story looks less like a reason and more like cover.

CIF, NMUSD, and USA Water Polo should audit the entire eligibility pipeline-not just the final paperwork. That review should include communications among district officials, coaches, club representatives, school administrators, families, and anyone else who helped arrange the transfers. Investigators should examine whether housing, enrollment, residency, transportation, coaching access, or athletic placement were coordinated behind the scenes.

Release the approval records, emails, text messages, residency documents, enrollment files, eligibility materials, calendars, call logs, and internal notes. Identify every person who touched these cases and every person who influenced them. Because if the transfers were clean, transparency will prove it. If they were not, the paper trail will show exactly who opened the door, who waved them through, and who decided the rules applied to everyone except the people with the right connections.

Sunlight will not damage this sport. Secrecy, favoritism, selective enforcement, and institutional protection will. If we want water polo to continue growing, clean it up now: protect the athletes, preserve fair competition, restore integrity, and make it unmistakably clear that no coach, club, donor, family, or championship program is bigger than the rules.

Looking into buying some heavy balls for the team. Was going to get the regular size 5 ones but saw they offer size 2, if you’ve used the smaller heavy balls before do you prefer them?

Hi everyone. Not a WP athlete, but im training for a military course that includes a decent amount of water con. events. Last week I started training the egg beater, and I can now basically do it non stop when I have my hands supporting me with a scull. But doing it with no hands, is a whole different experience, cant really last too long. Any advice on how to graduate to tread with no hands? Any advice appreciated!

I guess this doesn’t interfere with his Pro Recco contract, but Matteo Iocchi Gratta just played for a Japanese club team in the Japanese open championships at the end of August. (Blake Edwards was also there, but I think he’s at a different point in his career). His team lost by the way, but he led all scorers with 7 goals.

Anyway, it’s just a little baffling to me that he’d be here, but I guess players have to make the most of their playing years.

I dislocated my patella a year ago but I am wanting to get back into playing water polo by joining a master’s club. Has anyone ever heard of a waterproof brace or has another idea for support? And does anyone have experience playing off of a recovered dislocation injury or something similar? I haven’t played since high school but I am really missing the sport. I also can’t remember if it’s legal to play with braces or anything of the sort.

Would you be able to give us user flairs like they have in many sports subreddits, either for teams we support or teams we play for? Maybe have a bank of flairs for professional teams, and then if people want to upload a logo for their amateur/masters/school team, we could create that flair.

My coach is always telling me to keep my hips up and stay horizontal. He says it like everyone should understand it, by giving us advice but not really telling us how to do it(he taught others a few months ago but I wasn't there) I'm confused specifically what this means. To me, keeping hips up sounds like you should be vertical. If I'm facing towards the offensive guy then how tf am i supposed to swim backwards when they try to drive.

One more question: Whenever I try to eggbeat, I can never flex my ankles. I'll try to briefly and then my ankle feels tight and locks up and I can't produce the same power. Any similar experiences or recommendations to fix?

I’m trying to put together a little skills test practice for my team that I can do a couple times throughout the season to measure progress in different areas relevant to water polo.

So far the tests I have are:
-100 yard swim
-Tread with 8 lbs. medicine ball (Record how long ball is kept dry)
-Diving board taps (30 secs? to get as many as possible)

I wanted some sort of shooting test as well but don’t know what I could use for that.

What are some other ones you’d suggest? Or maybe you’ve already done something like this with your teams/clubs. Thanks in advance!

General demographics: Male, 6ft+, 30, former athlete, can swim/comfortable in water, and out of shape.

Growing up I played soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. As I've gotten older I do what I call hobby hop and have started doing things like skiing, mountain biking, surfing, jiu jitsu, golf, ect. The last time I got dedicated to a difficult sport was Jiu Jitsu, I trained hard for 2 years, competed, and felt like I came to my natural end with it about a year or so ago. However since then I've been looking for a new and difficult sport to get into.

My main question is how will the water polo community greet a complete beginner? I'm very comfortable being a beginner and having a student mindset. I don't foresee my ability to get along with others being an issue. What I'm mostly concerned with and what I assume is that this sport has a small community, competitive, with a pretty steep learning curve, and I don't want to cramp the style of the former competitors of the sport being that it's a team game.

I'm just looking to get into a sport I can do a couple times a week that is going to be physically demanding, and somewhat competitive.

I’ll be in Belgrade in October and, as a sports enthusiast, I’d love to watch a sport that isn’t found everywhere. That’s when I came across waterpolo, which apparently has a long tradition in Serbia. But I’m finding it very difficult to work out which leagues the Serbian clubs actually play in and where to find a fixture list, let alone how to buy tickets. Does anyone know anything about this and could share some info? I’d really appreciate any help!

I'm the water polo parent who's been building the live-scoring app some of you tested at JOs this summer. Two asks, both small and both specific.

Six Android testers. Android is the version I have the least real-world use on — most of my testers ended up on iPhone. I'm looking for six people with an Android phone whose kid is playing this fall: high school, or 10u–14u club, either works. You'd use it at actual games and tell me when something is wrong or confusing. No survey, no call, just message me when it breaks.

Two people for the desk scoring app. There's a separate iPad app that does one thing — score a game from the scorer's table or single sided if you just want to focus on scoring with none of the other distractions. If you're the parent or volunteer who regularly scores, I want two of you. You'd run a real game on it and tell me where it got in your way. I'll walk you through setup, about half an hour.

DM me and I'll get you access. I'm not asking anyone to review it or post about it — I want it broken in front of me before the season gets busy.
