Announcement MOD POST: Blacklisted Websites (looking for suggestions)

We have decided for the sake of transparency to make a list of websites that we do not allow links to in this subreddit

This is rarely an issue but we have had to remove posts of this nature a few times, and we want to be as upfront as possible with you all

So far we have Twitter and The Babylon Bee banned, and we are leaning towards banning all Meta apps (so threads insta fb etc, though this isn’t decided yet, there is seemingly a perfect split between the mods)

We are doing this in an effort to reduce traffic to harmful individuals, we know that it will not stop things, but we want to reduce it

We also still have a ban on anything to do with A.I., so that would be included in this as well

We are trying to make this community a safe one, and while again it likely won’t effect much, we want to know what other websites should be on the blacklist.

ETA: Seemingly the consensus is the former bird app and far right news organizations, I will discuss with the other mods and then we will add a new rule. Thank you to the handful who were respectful about it I did not expect this post to bring so much negative emotions to the forefront

Announcement PSA about My Singing Monsters

The My Singing Monsters discord server just teased that Weird Al might be cameoing in the game in the near future, and as someone who has been part of both communities for around a decade a piece now I thought it would be a good idea to make a statement super early

About My Singing Monsters

My Singing Monsters is a mobile game, put the pitchforks away I’m not done, it is much nicer than other mobile games, to get the full experience all you need is a little bit of patience and one single in app purchase of literally whatever you want, compared to its other things like Dragon City and Monster Legends the premium currency is super easy to get for free and limited time content is guaranteed to come back

About the collab

Weird Al will be a member of the legendary class of monsters, these monsters are collaborations with real world music artists, the first of these was the Shugabush on Plant Island, based on Kristian Bush, the second came 12 years later, bbli$zard on cold island, based on bbno$, the third is a yet unnamed monster releasing next month on water island, based on T-Pain

Weird Al will either go to Air Island, Earth Island, Fire Oasis, or Fire Haven, it is currently unknown which

The collab likely won’t happen until June or July at the earliest, given their development cycle and the fact that the employee teasing it usually starts teasing things he’s excited about only a few days after they are developed

VERY IMPORTANT

As I am sure that some MSM fans will find their way into this community I, on behalf of the moderation team, ask that Weird Al fans make MSM fans feel welcome, and that MSM fans respect the legacy of this artist (he has been performing for 50 years!!!)

It is ok to discuss his involvement with the game, but when he is officially added posts must be actually discussing his inclusion, and not just the fact he’s in the game, anything as simple as posting the render of the monster or quoting his sound will fall under our Low Effort Posting rule

And for Weird Al fans we ask that you respect the fact that even if MSM isn’t your cup of tea, some people really like it, we will not ban criticism of the game, but if we find something to be too overtly hostile towards the game and its fans it will fall under the “Don’t be rude” rule

The last thing we want in this community is unnecessary gatekeeping, so please, be nice to each other

(This message will self destruct in five… four… three..)

Discussion Well guys, it looks like I'm going to have to leave the fandom in disgrace.

I'm just now learning today that Al is a Christian, and as a lifelong fan of his, I am deeply ashamed at this unforgivable gap in my knowledge. So there's only one thing left for me to do. This weekend, I will be having a garage sale, at which I will sell:

• My entire CD collection

• My collection of Hawaiian shirts

• My glasses, even though I need those to see

• My novelty oversized rubber chicken

• My novelty miniature rubber chicken

• My autographed photo of Bob "Larry" Steenburgensteenstein, who once shook Al's hand

• My collection of aluminum foil

• Three hairs and a drop of saliva I collected from his hotel room when he appeared at the Oregon State Fair

Thank you for your attention.

Other Got told by a guy at a church I attend that Weird Al is offensive and I can’t be a real Christian if I listen to him

This guy at a church I attend went on at length about how I was not permitted to pay extra money to meet Weird Al, because he is an egotistical prick for charging to meet him, and that it would be similar to the minister charging to see her after the services.

He proceeded to state that “Amish Paradise” is offensive to the Amish faith and that “Pretty Fly for a Rabbi” is an anti-Semitic Jewish song.
This individual appears to possess no sense of humor whatsoever.

Picture WEIRD AL-BERTA: We Painted Weird Al with Alberta's Weirdest Landmarks!  Can You Help Us Get Him to See & Sign it to Raise Money for our Local Food Bank?!

Hey guys! For context - Weird Al comes to Edmonton, Alberta tomorrow (Sept 1st)!

I spent the last month painting the iconic Weird Al as "Weird Al-Berta": Weird Al walking amongst our strangest and most beloved Alberta landmarks (The Calgary Blue Ring, Edmonton's Talus Balls, Drumheller's Dino, Mundare Sausage. etc.! )

We're hoping Weird Al can see it/sign the painting before the show tomorrow & we'll auction it off with all funds going to our local Edmonton Food Bank!

Are you able to help us spread the word to get Weird Al to see it?! Gotta help the Weird AL-Gorithm, LOL.

Also - if anybody in Edmonton is doing a meet n greet with Weird al and could hand the painting off - let me know!!

"Al’s Brain" was originally created as an educational 3-D attraction for the Orange County Fair (Costa Mesa, CA). It debuted there in July 2009, and also had a successful run in September 2009 at Western Washington’s Puyallup Fair.

Since then, it has been “lost media”… until NOW.

Bigger & Weirder Tour Bummed that I've had to cancel plans to see Al in Vancouver this week, give me reasons to feel ok about it.

I got my ticket almost as soon as they went on sale, but now I can't afford to travel to the show. I'm pretty sad about it, so please tell me reasons why it's good that I can't go.

Discussion Saw Al in Winnipeg last night (Bigger & Weirder) - 4th time seeing him, and the magic is still very much alive

Weird Al was my childhood hero, and this show last night in Winnipeg marks my 4th time seeing him live. I first saw him back in 2010 as a child when he was touring around the Internet Leaks EP. I then saw the Mandatory Fun tour years later as a teen, and also caught the ridiculously self indulgent ill advised vanity tour.

Going into this, safe to say I knew the drill and what to expect. I understood that it was going to essentially be the same show I had seen back in 2010 and 2016, but I went with some friends and family that had never seen him before or hadn’t seen him in a very long time. It felt like it had been long enough that getting the live Al experience was worth it, especially to see the reactions of the people going for the first time.

And yes, it was very much the classic Al show. The video clips, the costumes, and MANY of the same beats and gags that he’s been doing for literally decades at this point. I know he’s a perfectionist, and has cultivated this show into exactly what it is today. It’s very much targeted towards people who have never seen him before. It didn’t bother me personally since he already did a couple deep cut tours in the last decade, but I could understand why some may find it repetitive or pointless for repeat viewings.

Opening the show with the backstage video stream for Tacky is a fun bit carrying over from the Mandatory Fun era. Great start to the show, although not the strongest vocal performance if I’m being honest. It really felt like Al was having to push hard to hit those high notes. However, the excitement of the moment made it not matter. I did notice that Al is using little backing track pieces for a few moments, which doesn’t bother me and is barely noticeable. His voice sounded great throughout most of the show, especially when singing something comfortably in range.

Mission Statement was cool from a musical standpoint, great vocals there, and the whole "contractually obligated to do a PowerPoint" bit was funny. However, I personally feel like going right into the Polka after Tacky would have packed a bigger punch and kept the energy high.

The entire stretch from the Polka to Fat was virtually perfect. The pacing was spot on and the track choices were great. The medley was an awesome rapid fire run through some classics.

I feel like the stretch of the show directly after Fat was my least favourite of the night. It’s not that I wasn’t enjoying it, because I was, but there are definitely some tracks I would have swapped out for some better picks. Hearing the Captain Underpants song was kinda fun, and I understand it’s a more recent one, but it was not exactly a highlight. I also felt "Now You Know" kinda overstayed its welcome, which I know is literally part of the joke of the track, but it’s another I could have done without. I just feel the bit didn’t really land without the actual end credits playing in the background. Just having random trippy visuals up there was a little out of place.

Stop Forwarding That Crap to Amish Paradise was a great string of hits that got everyone hyped up for the classic Star Wars Encore. Which genuinely never gets old. Hearing the Yoda Chant in all its glory this time around was truly mesmerizing. I was in awe of the creativity and brilliance.

Overall, despite my nitpicks with the setlist and the fact many of the gags here are carbon copies of routines he’s been doing for decades now, this was a truly spectacular show and I felt so grateful to have got to see it again. Thank you Al for the lifetime of musical memories!❤️

Suggestion A Personal Message to "Weird Al"

Dear Al (can I call you "Al"? I mean, we are close personal friends, after all - it's true; I joined the Close Personal Friends of Al fan club in the 1980s; and although my membership expired last Tuesday, I still consider myself a CPFoA.)

I attended your amazing "Bigger & Weirder" show at the Minnesota State Fair Friday night, so naturally I thought you might like some unsolicited feedback and career suggestions. You were clearly looking me straight in the eye at my 24th-row seat and, a la Jackson Park Express, you arched your eyebrow ever so slightly to suggest that I write you an entirely private letter and post it on this public forum.

  1. More new songs, parodies and original pastiches

While the upcoming "Weird Al" Broadway jukebox musical is exciting, that's clearly small potatoes. The fans want another album. What's the harm in signing another 14-album contract?

  1. Petition to play the Super Bowl Halftime Show
  • You could set a significant precedent: to date, the oldest lead performer to headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show was Roger Daltrey of The Who, who was 65 years old for SB XLIV on February 7, 2010. And he was not known to stomp any weasels. Clearly, multiple records could be broken here.
  • I have your set list already planned: start off with "Sports Song", entering the stadium with a full marching band. Finishing the song on the main stage, stage hands will help you into your Amish costume for "Amish Paradise". Follow up with a medley of classics including "Eat It", "Like a Surgeon", "Dare to Be Stupid", and others. Do a few others if you want, have a couple of special guests, I don't care (just don't wear those shoes). End with "Yoda" and the entire stadium (nay, the entire world) will be chanting "Y-O-D-A YODA" with you. It'll be bigger than that whole Wembley Stadium thing (whatever). You're welcome.
  1. I had a third thing, but I forgot it. It'll come to me, just hang on a sec.

  2. Since you're clearly looking for something to keep you busy, consider making a sequel to "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story", like "Weird 2: The Al Yankovic Story, Part 2" or something like that. The story needs to continue, regardless of the truth or profitability, and Hollywood digs sequels. Or what the hell, just reboot it starring Andrew Garfield or Timothy Dalton. It's only been a few years, no one will notice.

Whelp, that's all for this dump of shower thoughts. Remember, these suggestions are just between us - no one else will see them.

Your BFF,

Cmdr Nudnik

P.S.: In keeping with the moderated rules of this subreddit, I want to be clear that I am not breaking Rule 5 in suggesting song ideas. I am clearly suggesting a movie idea, not a song idea. Sheesh.

Discussion Weird Al Style Parody Information

Thumbnail
docs.google.com
9 Upvotes

I made this Google spreadsheet a while back documenting all the original songs played on the 2022 - 2023 Vanity Tour. It includes all the songs played on the tour, the albums the songs originally appeared on, what each song is in the style of, and what other years those songs were performed.

Question: Does anyone have any additional information about the style parodies and/or the songs, artists, or genres they‘re based on? Anything from another artists‘ song(s) that maybe influenced the song, a specific artist whose style the song resembles, a particular genre the song is based around, etc. Feel free to correct any mistakes I may have made on the spreadsheet.

I included links towards the bottom of the document of the sources I used for most of the information. You may also share any links that you may think will be useful for research.

I’m also probably going to make one for the 2018 Vanity Tour soon so you might see another post like this!

Discussion Swimming pool full of razor blades

When Al, in One More Minute with You, says that he would rather dive into a swimming pool filled with 10,000 double edged razor blades than spend one more minute with you.

How do you imagine that swimming pool full of razor blades?

A) A swimming pool full of water but also has 100,000 double edge razor blades.

B) An empty swimming pool, but filled with 100,000 double edged razor blades.

And as a bonus question, which do you think would be worse?
