SOTD Tonight’s shave

Post image
Upvotes

The only change up for tonight is my soap, and technique.

I broke out the Saponificio Varesino 80th Anniversary. The same quality I now come to expect from this brand.

However, I am nothing if not open to feedback and I got some great feedback last night on my improvement opportunities with my lather.

I took more time to load up my brush, and I used a bit more water in the scuttle, and the results were a decidedly better lather than what I’d done with Floris yesterday.

I again used true boiling water in the scuttle and the experience was luxurious.

I do 2 passes with the grain. Very little against the grain, and the results are a great shave. The lather was nice and hot for both passes. Does it matter? I don’t know but it’s certainly a more enjoyable experience.

Gamechanger Fomo

I have been really digging the Rockwell 6C and was considering a 6S. I noticed West Coast Shaving(hope they're legit) had Gamechangers in stock and on sale(US so gotta pay a premium as Italian Barber is a no go). I shave with plate 4 exclusivelyon the 6c and it looks like this gap is between the gaps of plate 4 and 5 so hoping its a win. I wanted something stainless.

This time I received these, 2 pkgs. The Dan's 6x2x1/2 still wrapped. Next were the razors.

I have an Ark Trans, familiar with it. See the darker spots? Damned thing absolutely Drank off my hands. Do you have a preference? Different stone for different blades/tasks?

The razors aren't much to brag about. But cool to me. The Dixie MFG Co (1902/20s) is interesting bc I'm not to far from Union City.

The Midget was styling tool. The slim blade helped with tight lines and mustache/lip area. Was labeled by Sears through Wilbert Cutlery (1908/21).

Question Are these dorco blades preferred by anyone?

Post image
Upvotes

I ask because the first time I started wet shaving I did purely on products that I could find locally, and wet shaving isn’t really a thing at all here anymore. For some reason the only blades anyone seems to stock are these dorcos, to the point where any DE blade is referred to as dorco. I have since purchased samplers with more popular brands, but every now and then I see some of you rocking these, and I wonder if by chance they are actually solid options. I have gotten mediocre to decent shaves on these.

Show n' Tell Vintage badger brush by Birks England

Hello! First time posting here as I've recently gotten back into wet shaving after many years of using an electric trimmer. I recently decided that I wanted to try a badger brush and looked into a used one. I found this on FB Marketplace. The seller said that it's from a long-defunct company and is probably at least 50 years old, so I was just curious if anyone here had ever seen a Birks product or knew anything about the company. Thanks!

Looking for a new razor for my wife as an anniversary present. I've decided on Henson and thought I'd found a great deal at hensonshavingbest.it.com

Notice the random .it.com, I didn't, should have.

The prices are super low which should have been my second clue. Gave them my credit card info, now I need to cancel that...

Learn from my stupidity...

SOTD SOTD: 58 Classic

Pre Shave: Shower and Waitrose glycerin soap bar

Razor: 1956-58 Gillette No. 58

Blade: Personna GEM PDG (51)

Brush: Captain Fawcett Synthetic V

Bowl Captains choice copper

Soap: Stirling Barbershop

Post shave: Stirling barbershop aftershave balm

A great shave this evening with the No. 58, or maybe it should be called the Rocket HD deluxe, as that's pretty much what they are.

A great balance of slightly aggressive and extremely efficient, makes for a very good shave.

Nice and smooth due to the tank like build amd heft.

3 passes without issues.

As the rotation would have it, it turned out to be a classic pairing today with this razor, Stirlings amazing barbershop and Captain Fawcetts Excellent synthetic brush.

Which altogether made for a very enjoyable one.

Hope your week is going well!

Review Thank You!!!

Last week I was doing yet more research on how to shave without my skin completely exploding with irritation. I’d tried cartridges, electric razors, straight razors, all to no avail (though I’m sure the straight razor failing was due to my own ineptitude and cheap equipment). Nonetheless, I stumbled upon this subreddit NUMEROUS times when searching “Best DE Razor”, “Best Shaving Cream”, “Best Blades” (trust me, I ordered a sample kit first), “Best Brushes”, etc.

Well I ended up buying a Mhule R89 with an Astra Stainless (currently) and a Prosaso Brush, Cream, and After Lotion. I was able to use it for the very first time 30 minutes ago.

IT WAS LIFE CHANGING!!!

I’m writing this now with literally no bumps and no irritation. I know I didn’t lather the cream enough, and I know that I didn’t always go with the grain, but it was honestly the best shave I’ve never had. And with the help of a couple YouTube tutorials, it was so incredibly approachable - dare I say easy - unlike the straight razor I had been trying to use.

So why write this long post you might ask. Well I’m nonbinary, and quickly before there are any knee jerk reactions, I’m not here to debate, argue, or proselytize.

Shaving just makes me feel better about myself. It makes me feel more genuine. Being able to shave while not having to worry and dread the inevitable irritation that comes with it is truly a godsend and blessing. So thank you so so much from the bottom of my heart.

Question How to date vintage Old Spice aftershaves?

Does anyone have a good way to tell the dates between vintage bottles of Old Spice? I know when they were acquired by P&G, stuff about them changed. Any solid, consistent way to tell on older bottles?

I found a good price on the Rockwell 6S.

I received an email from Fine shaving, and it states they have teamed up with Rockwell to offer the 6S at a pretty good price. I didn't look into any of the fine print (pun intended), but if someone is in the market, this may be a good time to buy.

The Return of Tabac Tuesday

SOTD: 09/01/2026

Razor: Gillette Slim Adjustable Prospector H3
Blade: Personna GEM DE, 1st use
Brush: Rad Dinosaur Creations Chathogany Manchuridon Badger
Preshave: Razor Emporium pre-shave soap
Soap: Tabac Puck
Aftershave: Tabac Classic Aftershave
Balm: Nivea Sensitive Balm
Additional Care: Alum Rock
Fragrance: Stirling Green - Solid Cologne

After 31 days of the same kit, it is a pleasure to try something new. Using the Slim felt like I had training won on comparison to the MMOC. Despite nearly no blade feel, all I needed was 2 passes for a near BBS. An excellent shave.

Question Should I Stop Wet Shaving?

I’ve been wet shaving with a safety razor/shavette for over a year. Even though I made a few small mistakes at the beginning, I can now complete a flawless two-pass shave even with a Japanese blade. However, no matter how careful I am, I get severe razor burn with double-edge/shavette blades, whereas I feel no skin irritation at all when using a Gillette Fusion 5 Proglide. I’ve tried pre-shave lotions, oils, and various creams. I’ve also tried at least 20 different blades, but nothing has changed. I’m starting to think my skin just isn’t suited for shavette shaving. Has anyone else experienced this? Is razor burn inevitable when shaving with a shavette? How can I tell if my skin is actually sensitive?

Tried my Rockwell 6C instead of AL13 for a change

I dabbled with shaving for a while. At first I bought Rockwell 6C for the changeable plates. Later learned about the AL13 and got that. I didn't use much neither but remember enjoying AL13 more. Overall I was interested in shaving my head not so much my beard.

Now I'm a mustache guy, so I started shaving regularly. I do like the ease of the Henson. I rarely cut myself, although I do every time if I even dare to go ATG. I'm also trying different blades, I'm on Astra Blue atm. Shaving with the grain I'm never really satisfied with the closeness of the shave, but what can I do, right?

A few days ago I saw a comparison on YouTube of the AL13 medium and the 6C. The guy concluded that the medium is the 2 plate. I was long curious to try a more aggressive razor as mine is mild. I remember having not so great of experience with my Rockwell but now I'm more experienced with DE shaving.

Today, out of curiosity or to commemorate my gf leaving me I gave 4 plate on my 6C a go. I did two passes WTG. The shave was mostly smooth. Even when I went slightly XTG it was far better than with AL13. I might've hesitated with the angle more than once, especially with under the bottom lip. Although it's still nowhere near a close shave, and I had some tiny nicks on my chin. What I noticed is that the skin is more sensitive afterwards and I feel that I have shaved my face. Some tenderness and heat are present. This doesn't happen with Al13 I go about my day with no extra sensations.

To the experienced shavers, was I too optimistic jumping to the 4 plate straight away?

Also, is it unreasonable to expect from a razor to give you 0 extra sensations after the shave?

SOTD 01/09/2026 - New soap and shave

Post image

Henson Ti+, Bic Chrome blade, Yaqi tuxedo 24mm synthetic brush, Zingari man The Wanderer, Thayers and Clubman Pinaud.

Lovely two pass shave today. WTG & XTG and no touch ups needed so very pleased. It’s been a while since I used my Henson and it didn’t disappoint. Smooth and trouble free.

I had been looking forward to trying my new soap and it was well worth the wait. Lovely clean scent that I am finding really difficult to label. I find it a lovely barbershop with a bit of spice and clean detergent. Told you I was struggling to label it! My wife and even our neighbour, who was visiting said what a lovely scent I was giving off so it definitely got a thumbs up. The lather was very rich, it can take a ton of water and the slickness is great and so is the residual slickness. It paired lovely with the clubman and left my skin feeling great. Really looking forward to trying the soap with my boar brushes.

Discussion What are your thoughts on shaving with cold water?

Basically ever since i rinse my double edged razor with cold water between passes my face gets a lot less irritated. I know that the "traditional" wisdom is that you use hot/warm water and then rinse the face with cold water so as to close the pores, however, I find cold water much better in general. Thoughts on this?
