I'm doing a project for my STAT class, and I need to gather my own data to see how many gym goers can lift 225 lbs. Your responses would be greatly appreciated :)

Simple Questions is being natty just coming to terms that you will never look muscular unless you flex?

Upvotes

obviously the caveat is being at insanely low body fat but i feel like that is not sustainable or healthy long term.

question stems from the fact if im at the gym flexing i look like i workout but if im just inside sitting down i look like i could pack a whole cake in 30 seconds flat.

What exercise do you keep doing mostly because you just genuinely enjoy it?

I know the usual advice is to choose exercises based on stimulus, progression, fatigue, your goals, etc.

But I have a couple movements that are honestly still in my program because I just like doing them.

Cable rows are the biggest one for me. I know there are a million variations that might fit some specific goal better, but a heavy controlled row just feels satisfying every single time.

Same with farmer carries. They probably aren't the most important thing in my week, but walking around holding stupidly heavy weights makes my brain happy, so they stay.

I used to feel like every exercise needed a very serious justification. Now I think enjoying something is probably a decent reason too, especially if it keeps me wanting to train.

What exercise would you keep even if someone told you there was a slightly more “optimal” alternative?

tips on how to build upper body strength fast (for school)

Upvotes

I have a fitness test at school where I have to do push-ups, but I currently can’t do any. I asked if I could do knee push-ups instead, but they said no. What’s the best way to build strength quickly so I can start doing proper push-ups?

I currently weigh around 170 lbs, so I’m not sure if that’s making push-ups more difficult for me or if I just need to build more upper-body strength.

Simple Questions Do you actually prefer working out at home or at the gym?

The gym obviously has more equipment, but being able to work out without leaving the house sounds pretty nice too 😂

For people who’ve done both, where are you actually more consistent?

Exercise Help What’s the best way to gain muscle/energy and lose fat (40+ Male)

Upvotes

I’m a 40+ male and looking for help to find the best way to gain muscle and energy and lose body fat (I feel lethargic certain times of the day mainly mid afternoon)

I am a vegetarian and feel I don’t get enough protein in my body which maybe a reason for my lethargy.

Any nutrition advice, workout routine, exercises would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance!

I am 5’10 and 185 lbs currently if that matters

any advice to advance strength on free weights for biceps?

Upvotes

my biceps have been blowing up recently which is great but my main exercise which is incline dumbbell curls, ive been stagnant at around 6-8 reps for the past maybe 3 weeks to a month

but ive gone up 10 pounds on my free weight hammer curls, went from 55 to 65 and ive progressed about 10-20 pounds on all my bicep curl machines within the same time frame.

(machines) such as a preacher curl or recline curl machine ^^

but my free weight dumbbell curl on incline hasnt changed which is really confusing considering everything else is getting stronger.

and yes i know hammer curls do not work the bicep but it still thought i should mention it.

2 sets of 6-8 or 3 sets of 10-12?

Upvotes

Hi guys, im new to the gym, im 16m, and i am slightly overweight but also very muscular underneath the fat. Im 6'1 and 205 lbs. Im doing upper body 2 times a week and legs once. I've got 6 exercises in each workout, and so i was wondering if I should do 6-8 close to failure or 3 sets of 10-12 of less hard workout if that makes sense. Im very confused with the sets, and so i was looking for advice if that's possible.

How to start Too shy to go to the Gym

Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I want to get fit, I have 4 kids, but I have spare time daily. Ang biggest problem ko ay ang pagiging mahiyain. Gusto ko mag start mag gym pero nahihiya ako. Paano ba? Sa mga may same thoughts ko bago kayo nag gym, how was your experience when you first walked in the gym? May nag approach ba na coach or nag offer ng help on how or where to start?

Badly need your comments.

Other Factors that impact VO2 max (research based guide)

I get that there's varying opinions on the importance of an individual's absolute VO2 max number. Personally how VO2 max trends over time is what is more interesting to me as I find it a good signal to track long term health/longevity and how much overall fitness you're gaining or losing over time.

If this is a topic you're interested in learning more about I've built out this list of factors that influence it as a starting point for anyone to learn more and do their own research. To make this easier I've broken this down by category, included a short plain english definition, and linked all sources (scroll to the right on the tables and you'll see the hyperlinks). I've removed a few from here as it was getting far too long and sorry I know the tables are a bit of a pain on mobile.

Exercise

Factor Impact Study/effect Plain English Evidence rank
HIIT (long interval, high volume) Increase Wen 201930919-8/abstract). Meta, 53 RCTs. SMD 0.50 to 2.48 vs control, 0.65 to 1.07 vs steady cardio Intervals of 2 min+ are the only version that beats steady cardio Strong
Detraining Decrease Zheng 2022. 21 athlete studies. Under 30 days ES −0.62 (−3.93%). Over 30 days ES −1.42 (−9.43%) Under a month off costs about 4%, longer about 9% Strong
Moderate continuous cardio Increase Wen 2019. Overall SMD 0.41 to 1.81 across populations Steady cardio works, it is just less time efficient Strong
Sprint interval training Increase Sloth 2013. 19 studies, 13 with VO2max data. g = 0.63 (0.39 to 0.87), +4.2 to 13.4% Very short all out sprints reliably raise it Moderate to Strong
Resistance training (alone) Increase Smart 2022. 37 studies, 22 pooled. +1.89 mL/kg/min (1.21 to 2.57) under 24 weeks. Null beyond 24 weeks Small bump in over 60s, and only in shorter programs Moderate

Nutrition & Supplements

Factor Impact Study/effect Plain English Evidence rank
Dietary nitrate / beetroot No effect Gao 2021. Meta, 73 studies, n=1,061. Submaximal VO2 −0.04 L/min (p<0.00001). VO2max not significant Makes a given pace cheaper to hold. It does not raise your ceiling Strong
Creatine Slight decrease Gras 2023. Meta, 19 RCTs, n=424. ES −0.32 (−0.51 to −0.12) Adds body water, so the per kilo number dips slightly Strong
Iron (when deficient) Increase Pasricha 2014. 24 RCTs, 18 for this figure. +2.35 mL/kg/min (0.82 to 3.88) Fixing low iron raises it. This is correcting a deficit, not a boost Moderate to Strong
Caffeine No effect Brietzke 2017. RCT, n=9. Time to exhaustion +18.7%, peak power +13%, VO2max unchanged Helps you push harder. Much of the benefit is placebo Moderate

Demographics

Factor Impact Study/effect Plain English Evidence rank
Body fat / excess weight Decrease (per kg) van Baak 2021. 66 RCTs, n=3,964. Training +3.82 mL/kg/min (3.17 to 4.48) The score is per kilo, so losing fat raises it arithmetically Strong
Age Decrease Fleg 2005. Baltimore Longitudinal Study, n=810. 3 to 6% per decade in the 20s and 30s, over 20% from the 70s Decline accelerates with age, and faster in men from the 40s onward Strong
Genetics (trainability) Variable Bouchard 1999. HERITAGE, n=481 across 98 families. Maximum heritability estimate 47% Same training, wildly different response. It runs in families Strong
Dehydration Decrease Cheuvront 2010. Mechanism review. Threshold is over 2% of body mass Less blood volume to pump, and heat makes it worse Moderate
Sex Variable Santisteban 2022. Review. 10 to 12% performance gap. Elite women about 10% lower per kg Mostly oxygen delivery, meaning haemoglobin mass and heart size Moderate
Immobilization / bed rest Decrease Saltin 1968 n=5, with McGavock 2009 follow up. −26% in three weeks Three weeks flat on your back costs about what 40 years of aging does. Crazy. Moderate

Lifestyle & Environment

Factor Impact Study/effect Plain English Evidence rank
Sedentary behaviour Decrease Eriksen 2016. n=16,025. No association among the highly active Matters most if you are not already training hard Moderate (observational)
Sauna bathing (habitual) Increase Kunutsor 2024. 2,012 men. +0.30 mL/kg/min per weekly session. Lee 2022 RCT +2.7 (0.2 to 5.3) A small extra bump stacked on top of training Moderate
Smoking Decrease Caci 2025. n=70, step test estimate. 38.8 vs 41.6 in never smokers Lower aerobic ceiling. Whether quitting reverses it is untested here Moderate
Altitude (live high, train low) Increase Wehrlin 2006. 10 elite orienteers at 2,500 m for 18 h/day over 24 days. VO2max 3,515 to 3,660 mL/min Sleeping high builds more oxygen carrying red cells Moderate
Heat acclimation Increase Waldron 2021. 28 articles. Hedges' g 0.42 cool, 0.63 hot. Lorenzo 2010 +5% cool, +8% hot Plasma volume expands. Clearest when you are also tested in heat Moderate

Simple Questions Fixed-path machines vs bench + barbell

I’m new to working out more intentionally, and I’ve been mostly using fixed-path machines to avoid injuries etc., and it’s been going well. Yesterday, I tried bench pressing with a barbell, and shoulder flies with two dumbbells. Today, multiple muscles are very sore, and I’m feeling tired, which I never experienced before. Fyi, I always do muscle activation beforehand and stretching afterwards to avoid injuries and soreness and they helped a lot.

What do you guys the reason might be? Have you experienced the same difference between machines vs barbells / dumbbells?

Thanks guys!

Exercise Help Minimal full leg workout?

I hate leg day, so I wanna make this as simple and fast as possible. What are the bare essential exercises I need to do to hit everything. I don't want to become a crazy body builder, just don't want chicken legs. So I don't expect to go nauseating heavy.

Here is my leg day right now. What things can I remove or sets/reps I can adjust. Thanks.

Romanian Deadlift 3x5

Barbell Squat 5x5

Leg Press 3x8

Lying Leg Curl 3x8

Leg Extension 3x8

Seated Calf Raise 3x8

Nutrition Help Post surgery diet questions

Hey everyone,

I hope this is appropriate for here, but if not please let me know if there is a better sub for these questions.

I (M43, 5’7” 199, down from 285) had hernia surgery about a week ago (and oral surgery to remove 3 wisdom teeth about 3 weeks prior to that, but that’s less important/germane), and if you’ve never had hernia surgery it kinda feels like someone has cut open your stomach and pushed your organs back into your body. Because that’s pretty much what they did.

Anyhoo, I at first thought they were going to do a laparoscopic surgery but they had to do a hybrid laparoscopic/open surgery which means that instead of being in recovery for 1-2 weeks it’s closer to 4-6 weeks.

My question is this: how should my caloric intake/nutrition goals change?

I’ve been on a pretty slow, sustained cut/body recomp for a little over a year now losing about 85 lbs, which I’m really proud of, and I’m trying to accept that I will gain some weight during this time, but I’m also wondering if I should cut back on calories until I’m back working out.

Prior to surgery I was running about 15-20 miles a week (over 5 sessions), strength training 3 days a week (60-90 min), indoor rowing once a week (20 min) and indoor biking about once a week (45 min).

Also, would now be a good time to start creatine, or should I wait until I’m lifting again. I know the best time to start is yesterday generally, but I haven’t due to a mental hang up about gaining weight and I won’t be weighing myself as much while not working out because of that/I don’t necessarily think I have to.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks for reading.

Simple Questions Workout best

OK, maybe it’s just me but I have seen so many repeat post about the worst experience of the worst things are the worst habits anybody’s ever experiencing in the gym. How about this.

What are some of your favorite things about your gym or some of the best things that you’ve seen at the gym as far as gym etiquette, behaviors, interactions.

So easy to talk about the negative, so let’s talk about the positive here!

I’ve gotta tell you I absolutely love my gym and have experienced so few of the behaviors that are so commonly posted here and maybe I’m just lucky but I’m curious what else is happening out there that is positive

Exercise Help Hi. I’m the 18-year-old guy who was struggling with chest workouts. Is it a good idea to lower the weight I use for chest exercises so I can feel it more, rather than just working my arms?

I’d like to know what it feels like to train the chest correctly. I’ve already started using the machines.

Other Anyone else feel super weak for their size?

I’m 5’11.5 165lbs at around 11-12% bodyfat, have just cut from 205lbs 25%ish but I feel my lifts are super weak for my size now.

Bench press - around 210 1rm (could do 240lbs before my cut)
Squat - don’t do them because of bad knees but can do around 225lbs for 8 reps
Deadlift - also don’t do anymore but can do 350lbs for 5 reps (used to be able to do 465lbs when I was training for strength and heavier)
Dumbbell bench - 82lb dumbbells
Incline bench smith machine- 175lb 12reps
Seated shoulder press - 145lbs 5 reps
Barbell rows - 145lbs 12 reps

I don’t actually train for strength anymore just hypertrophy which obviously explains this but it still feels off since I see kids at my gym in high school who are like 130lbs with 12 inch arms benching 225lbs lol. Pretty crazy that I’m actually weaker than 16 year olds who have barely gymed for half a year.

Simple Questions Do I need to eat more?

37m 5’ 11”

I’ve been working out 5 times a week since Mid February. Went from 137lbs to 152lbs. Somewhat counted my calories at the beginning, but I’ve been tracking them for real for the last 134 days. I get 150g of protein, 3000 calories, and 350 carbs.

I train to failure and my lifts are getting heavier.

From April to now, I’ve only gained a little over 10 pounds. Do I need to eat even more food?

Simple Questions Workout or walk?

Upvotes

I recently started a job that has an on call rotation and I had a call recently that happened just as I started my workout routine. After the call was over I had a dilemma, there was not enough time to complete my daily routine and get my workout and walk in. Reluctantly I chose the walk because I have to commute to the gym to workout. So I pose the question I pondered on my walk, is it more beneficial that I go for a walk or would it have been more beneficial to go to the gym from an overall heath perspective. Which would you choose if you only had time to do one?
