In 2008, Baltimore mom Jennifer Buettner created the drug Obecalp (Placebo backwards). Made out of sugar and flavored like cherries, the pill was designed to be given to children to treat minor aliments not deserving proper treatment. Although it was designed for children, however, her website, inventedbyamother.com which can be accessed on the way back machine, also cites studies about placebos treating depression, pain, and high blood pressure. Depression especially seemed to be a major focus, with the site (which is dated to 2008), repeatedly mentioning how antidepressants have supposedly no greater effect than placebos in the majority of cases. The pill, which seems to have garnered a significant amount of attention at the time, was quickly criticized by many health professionals for ethical and practical reasons, pointing out how intentionally tricking your kids may not be the most productive way to help them recover, and how, in many cases, simple solutions like cold towels or resting could work just as well. From what I can find, after the initial hype wore off, it seems as though the pill, and its parent company Efficacy Solutions faded away. However, it did spark the creation of many other placebo pills, leaving a lasting impact. How do we feel about intentionally inducing the placebo effect in children? Ethical or no?

For nearly 150 years, geometers and other academics have been trying to imagine a mysterious fourth direction in space to account for the math of 4D geometry, but that abstract spatial axis has never been observed. Space remains three-dimensional.
